The Flagship Sunk by Moo U (Again)

Thoughts & Observations:
*THE University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sure isn’t acting like The Flagship it’s supposed to be, especially after losing (again) to lowly Moo U, which does little more for the Old North State than produce diploma-less farmers (but rest easy, the Carolina Way is as reliable as ever).

*Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O. That’s always been my favorite song — for the younger among you, the band plays that only after wins — and it especially sounds great after Old MacDonald slaughters his sheep.

*The D looked incredible and the running game was obviously dominant, but I didn’t think we’d see opposing QBs play as collectively bad as Glennon, Renner and Hanson again for a long time. In fact, it only took about four hours, when #1 LSU played #2 Alabama. That was awful.

*I’m curious when was the last time State was shutout and followed it by a shutout of its own. Anyone know?
WV Wolf Edit: It looks like 1963, lost to Florida St 14-0 then beat Wake Forest 42-0 the next game

*I love the way we’re marketing ourselves now with the “State” branding. From the “Graduating…it’s a State thing” (with Philip the Great) to “Welcome to Our State,” it seems like this administration is doing what its predecessors were always too incapable or unwilling to do: let this great fan base market itself, to itself, the way it sees itself (rather than the way some marketing group thinks it should be seen). Woodson and Yow certainly deserve credit for the shifting culture.

*TOB has never lost to the state’s preeminent program, and if he can get this team to 7-5 (and a probable bowl in either Charlotte or even Nashville), then his seat would cool down. The problem is, we absolutely play Carolina tougher than everyone else, and TOB has never won an Atlantic Division road game, and that’s a problem that needs to be corrected immediately, as next week’s game in Chestnut Hill is a must-win.

*During the Virginia game, my buddy commented that compared to TOB, most of us are emotional trainwrecks. Well, Withers’ moronic comments this week apparently jostled TOB’s usually-stoic emotions, because reports say he was visibly shaking while responding with his “triple play” comments after practice the other other day. And then in the postgame, TOB admitted “I’m certainly going to enjoy this one.”

Joe Ovies (one of the few who picked State to win) says the motivation from Withers worked…for State (WRAL).

“I guess we’re the farmers and they are the educated people?” asked [Audie] Cole. “Whatever. Either way, we won, and the farmers will be happy going to work on Monday.”

Box Score (GoPack).

Caulton Tudor says this win may keep TOB off “shaky turf” (N&O).

Previous records following a win over the flagship say otherwise, but I’ve got a feeling we achieve bowl eligibility by beating BC and MD.

Tom O’Brien’s stiff-upper lip, unemotional, stoic demeanor undoubtedly gets on some of our nerves when we’re losing and we’d like to see our coach mirror our outrage. I still sure as hell think his is the best of all possible attitudes when we win. He’s not overwhelmed with joy when we win, it’s the outcome he and everyone involved should demand by the work they put in and expect on game day by the standard high level of effort. And he’s not afraid to give an appropriately low level of credit to the parts of our team who had 5 passes batted down and “did enough” to win.

The gloves with the wolf eyes were a nice touch also. I haven’t seen those before-are they new or was I just not paying attention?

I disagree that Glennon played a bad game. He did have the early pick, but I thought he played fantastic. When your running game and defense is on, why take too many chances – just manage the game and take some short, underneath low-risk passes when you need to. He picked up quite a few third downs and engineered some nice, sustained drives.

We shouldn’t need heroic efforts from our QB to win football games.

I think Glennon is a fantastic QB.

PackFaninLA – I tend to agree.

If you want to see a QB make critical mistakes that keeps an otherwise fantastic performance from all other units on the team, look at the 2007 game. 2 pick six’s in a game that we barely eaked out. Glennon didn’t make those same mistakes yesterday. He did what the staff asked him to do.

If you are the worrying type, feel free to worry about the 34 points our offense has scored in the last 3 games.

Finally, there’s a rumor out there that a certain Tar Heel DL hawked a loogey in our kicker’s ear after the first extra point…I don’t know if it’s true or not…

    1960……..last time in Raleigh….1921.

    Glennon > Brynn Renner

    That’s about it though.

Please, please, please everyone stop calling UNC-CHeats “flagship” even in jest. Time to stop perpetuating this myth. A flagship is generally considered the leader. They haven’t ever acted like a leader, just liars and cheats. They have grade inflation, and academic fraud not just in the atheltic population but in the academic population as well. Their honor court and adminsitration is so out of touch that they cann’t even recognize plagiarism. They cann’t control thier tuturs and don’t give the appearance that they even try. That is not and has not been a flagship. The sooner that myth dies, the better the State of North Carolina will be.

The new red pants look much better than previous ones. Less sheen perhaps?

    Glennon >> Renner
The first thing I thought when I saw Renner was, “What a wussy little arm he has”

  10. pack76 11/06/2011 at 7:03 PM #

Pack74! I agree!!! We need to stop promoting that! MooU is the leader in this STATE!!!

  11. runwiththepack 11/06/2011 at 8:24 PM #

    Pack74, +1.

HOW are they leading NCSU? If they have control over NCSU somehow, then is it necessary, or even helpful? I don’t doubt that the BOG, (chock full of Chapel Hill grads), has at least a little influence over what happens in Raleigh. But I sure would like an explanation of what the term “flagship” entails.

Or is it just that the school is older? They merely feel that they are superior, generally? Why do medical, law, sociology, and dentistry folks need to have much to do with engineering, poultry science, forestry/wood tech, etc…?

  12. runwiththepack 11/06/2011 at 8:26 PM #

… er, Wolf74 is what I meant, instead of Pack74.

We did win the game because of outstanding defense, as for Glennon I agree it was not a stellar performance, and he is still a work in progress, but is improving his passing, and decision making abilities. I just would like him to stop having so many tipped passes. At his height that should not be happening. Here’s to a win at BC, and then take the tiger by the tail. It is possible.

  14. tjfoose1 11/06/2011 at 9:11 PM #

Glennon played poorly. He’d tell you that himself. He had no ‘pocket presence’ and often seemed unaware of the situation and his surroundings.

Because he didn’t play bad enough to cause us a defeat does not mean he played well and was a good ‘manager’ of the game.

That said, kudos to Glennon for fighting through it, and kudos to his teammates for doing what they’re supposed to do – picking up the slack for a teammate off his game.

  15. runwiththepack 11/06/2011 at 9:12 PM #

Now that Russell’s team lost a couple games, it’s nice that it’s not a big deal when Glennon doesn’t have one of his best days. Yet, I doubt his NFL prospects are hurting much from the 2 losses.

Washington, it’s great to see you playing your best ball, as far as i can remember. Game ball to Washington?

5 in a row!! Colors are brighter, the food tastes better, and
    I feel a little younger.

And I hope that the defense will build on this, which will probably assure NCSU of winning the BC and MD games. I want to go bowwwwwwling!!! Take care of biz, pak, the rest of the season.

I wholeheartedly second this. Not at all convinced it will happen, but I’d sure prefer to NOT have Maryland (even at home) between us and a bowl bid. Our track record in such games does not bode well and as much as I hate Maryland (VERY close second to Carolina), my blood pressure would peak and I’d probably have a stroke if we lost to them (again) in that scenario.

That being said, I’m realistic enough to realize that if we can’t beat BC and Maryland, then we aren’t deserving of a bowl bid anyway.

  17. El Lobo Loco! 11/07/2011 at 4:04 AM #

    I’m quite pessimistic.
A win over BC is possible, if the guys keep the emotion and energy going.
However Maryland has our number for years….

Great effort Saturday against our arch rival. The Smurf Smackdown was so satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game. Glennon’s shaky start concerned me at first. For such a tall QB he just doesn’t see those DE’s right in front of him and he had several batted down. But our running game and defense set the tone and was reminiscent of last years. Kicking game was great as well.
The way we played gave me hope that we can win out and then go bowling, but as TOB pointed out, we have to straighten out some things to keep the winning streak going. Capable? Yes. Probable? Maybe.

  19. WolfBlood 11/07/2011 at 11:02 AM #

I wish I had a picture of the look on my face when I was walking out of the stadium. I had so much fun Saturday, we beat the crap out of unx and my cornhole game was ridiculously on point.

  21. runwiththepack 11/07/2011 at 4:49 PM #

    Bladen,

I suspect that Glennon gets a lot of passes blocked because the DL’s can watch his eyes too easily, or the OL makes that too easy. Maybe it can be remedied eventually, whatever is causing it. I thought he was so tall that it would be too difficult to bat his passes down. Wrong.

I am now paranoid that we will lose to BC. But I was paranoid about UNC, too.

  22. mak4dpak 11/07/2011 at 8:39 PM #

While closing out the season with 3 more wins would be great, I say one game at a time. So lets take care of BC, and if we show up with the same intensity on defense, as we had against UNX, we will, then Clemson just might have their hands full at our next home game. Probably nationally televised too. Go Pack!!!!!!!!!!

I wish Beowolf would return and bring the Leslie Nielson .gif with him. Come to think of it, I didn’t see it last year, either. I miss that.
