Butch Davis Fired (Confirmed!!!) Did 216 phone calls nail the coffin shut?

NBC report on the rumors.

LRM asks: Uh…considering the timing of this (if true), then what on earth changed? To think, if this had been done last summer, the whole thing would’ve largely been forgotton (especially with the issues at Ohio State, Auburn and now Oregon). But now there will undoubtedly be penalties of some sort, and I have to think firing the Chief right now must be part of some attempt by the Flagship for the NCAA to accept lesser, self-imposed penalties.

SFN asks: The timing of this alongside of the scrambling of Butch’s ‘secret phone’ seems very ‘coincidental’. I can’t help but wonder aloud if the information from his 216 phone was very damning in the end? We will see. For more conversation, you can click to this thread in our message forum.

GAWolf asks: Given that the timing is so curious (read: could not be worse for the Heels), could it be that Butch misled the powers that be in Chapel Hill regarding his personal phone “last fall” when Greg Barnes alleges the phone records were reviewed (snicker) by UNC. One can’t help but think that it would be an easy pitch unless someone started putting random phone numbers with names. It’s interesting that on the eve of the release and after Butch allegedly put time into “redacting” these records the school pulls the cord on Butch before the phone records are released.

Went over to IC for the first time in a while….really entertaining watching them turn on each other…

Think about this scenario..There is no way they fire Butch and buy out his contract..They have “the dirt” on him now to fire him WITH CAUSE which let’s them out of the buy-out!!!

Our boys on the radio are missing that point!

  3. Hungwolf 07/27/2011 at 6:29 PM #

Timing of the firing coincides with new members of the UNC trustees at their first meeting today. Guess Thorpe and Baddour figured they no longer had numbers. Closed door meeting between Davis, Thorpe,a nd Baddour yesterday. Wonder if minutes from that meeting are public knowledge.

I think buyout of Davis contract will tell us alot. No pay plus fired, then UNC has dirt on him, blast him with NCAA to save their own ass.

Big buyout, then they paying him to keep his mouth shut like Blake, then Davis no shows at NCAA meeting in Oct. They do this to save their own asses and hopefullly save any dirt on bball players or the bball program from being exposed.

This is how I see it. Anyone think they bring back Bunting or bring in someone from outside?

I’ve got that old song from Musical Youth stuck in my head now…

I say: Pass the Butchie on the left hand side
Pass the Butchie on the left hand side
It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance
It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

  5. IamGumbyDammit 07/27/2011 at 6:32 PM #

If they pay the payout, UNX is screwed. If they don’t, BMFD is screwed. Sounds like a can’t lose deal to me.

I think it will be interesting to see how the Holes come out of the woodwork admitting that Butch had to have known something.

When he was still “one of theirs”, he was off limits. Now that he’s out, they will throw him under the bus and pile on like nobody’s business!

  7. TruthBKnown Returns 07/27/2011 at 6:39 PM #

One bad aspect of this is that Butch doesn’t have to answer to the NCAA any more, not that he would have faced them anyway. But he’s now in the category of Blake and the tutor. He doesn’t HAVE to talk.

  8. mafpack 07/27/2011 at 6:41 PM #

Here’s a thought I haven’t seen yet. If the 216 call logs were the nail in the coffin, is it possible the BOT just fired Butch to keep those records from coming to light. As he is now no longer an employee of the State of North Carolina, do call records from his personal (before and after his employment at UNC) need to be released?

If Butch just says ‘No’ is there anything the media or the NCAA can do about it? Could this just be another case of the BOT covering their own collective ass?

  9. mafpack 07/27/2011 at 6:41 PM #

Gah, TruthBKnown … you posted exactly what I was thinking while I was writing it… gimme back my tin foil hat dangit!

  10. IamGumbyDammit 07/27/2011 at 6:43 PM #

I had to laugh at the picture of the three gay cabalerros in the N&O article. Baddour MIGHT coast into retirement but Thorpe is hosed. Having the BoT do the job for you isn’t good. Hey Holden – they’re called testicles. You should have grown a pair a year ago.

  11. IamGumbyDammit 07/27/2011 at 6:53 PM #

And thus the birth of a new colloquial term for being magnanimously fired the after telling a gaggle of press how you have your bosses’ full support: “getting Butch-slapped”

  12. state73 07/27/2011 at 6:55 PM #

1 down 2 to go!! Baddour and Thorpe.

  13. BJD95 07/27/2011 at 6:56 PM #

Oh, you can have all the support in the world from your boss. But when the boss’ boss puts his foot down…well, that support and $2.32 will get you a Venti Pike Place at Starbucks.

    Just ask Chuck Amato. LMAO.

    BWAA-HA-Ha-Ha.

This is capital foolishness (Don’t get me wrong I love it!). They have essentially ruined any chance of coming out of this in the next 5 years.

The smart move would have been to fire Butch LY, and hire a solid coach before the sanctions hit. At this point, the best possible move was to stick with him until the truth came to light and pull Butch’s ‘betrayed-by-someone-I-trust’ rabbit out their hat to fire him after the sanctions. Instead they went with the short bus strategy, ruin not one but TWO recruiting classes and get stuck with an interim HC who may be the best they’ll be able to get after the worst timed firing decision in college football history!

Now no one without a double digit IQ would take the job, what with the axeman (NCAA) sharpening up over in the corner, and this recruiting class and prolly NY ruint. I read into this that they know they are getting ready to get waxed, and figured out at long last that Butchie Boy fibbed, panic ensued. Or the new BOT wanted to start off their rule with a Stalinist approach. Either way……Yay!

Fun to watch their football fanbase divide, at about the time or B’Ball fanbase is slowly getting back together. Ah, sweet karma.

  15. highstick 07/27/2011 at 7:07 PM #

No detailed minutes cause that would have been a “personnel matter”..Executive session…with any actions taken included in minutes…so NO..

Also, BUTCH does have to appear at the NCAA meeting..And refusal to talk will be “refusal to cooperate”..

  16. runwiththepack 07/27/2011 at 7:27 PM #

    Rats!! This stinks.

Couldn’t this drag on ANOTHER year?

Maybe it will if some more “beans are spilled”.

But I was starting to like the lovable lug.

Sing, somebody! SOMEBODY must start singing, or it will be a painful withdrawal for me.

This has all been arranged to make it easy for the BOT to sweep all kinds of *(#@ and *())&^ under the rug.

    Independent investigation….

Let’s get Rush Limbaugh on this….

“”What started as a purely athletic issue has begun to chip away at this University’s reputation. I have been deliberate in my approach to understanding this situation fully, and I have worked to be fair to everyone involved. However, I have lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution.”

Once again, the perception of UNC is more important than what is actually happening at UNC.

  18. tuckerdorm1983 07/27/2011 at 7:46 PM #

all i have to say is “more to come”. It won’t matter much when the basketball team is playing in the final four next year. Those tarholes will have forgotten all about this little problem.

  19. runwiththepack 07/27/2011 at 8:03 PM #

    tucker,

You may be right, but i hope not. (You probably are right, actually).

“He with the gold makes the rules”. (Ahem! Curtis media group., N&O, Charlotte Observer, WRAL, gag, gag, gag… )

    Jeremy,

perception is everything… IF you have legions of political scientists, lawyers, sociologists, etc… beating down the general populace.

  20. skippyjon jones 07/27/2011 at 8:11 PM #

    Yes!

Looks like Christmas in July “arroved” two days late. I just got back in town from a work trip to find my UNX law grad neighbor wailing in the backyard and throwing beer bottles at trees.

Those actions are usually saved for special occasions like when the Pack plays UNX in football!

I’m hearing a rumor (and that’s all it is at this point) that Butch covered up players DUI’s.

Some Inside Carolina posts – music to dance to:

    1. “A smart AD somewhere is smiling ear-to-ear realizing that BD is now available. I wont be surprised one bit to see BD coaching in a BCS bowl in the next 2 years.”
    and,
    2. “Time will tell, but recruiting is gonna suck for the next few months until a permanent replacement is found.”

    3. “scotlandheel wrote:

this is bs…nothing new…you support him for a year and fire him a week before practice starts…sends a real strong message to future recruits and to the current team: I can translate this for you. We just decided to pour gas on the football program and start tossing lit matches at it!!!”

4.”They better have somebody lined up…or this is going to be even more of a nightmare.”

Well, you get the idea. Go to Inside Carolina for a LOT more. Enjoy!

Ding, dong, the sheen is gone. The “tarheel” sheen, the “tarheel” sheen.
Ding, dong, the wicked sheen is gone!

(unfortunately, Davis is gone about one year too early.)

  24. Wulfpack 07/27/2011 at 8:39 PM #

Can’t help but think that reasonable minds finally had enough of Butch’s lies and saw how easy the NCAA is going on tOSU after ridding themselves of Tress. I still think UNC gets hammered pretty hard but this may help. I have no idea where UNC goes from here. The REAL question is what Butch (and his supporters) disclose about what was really going on. If he wants another job at a major institution, he’ll keep his mouth shut. But I sure as hell hope he spills the beans.

  25. BJD95 07/27/2011 at 8:41 PM #

To recap the career of Butch Davis at UNC:

    1) No Coastal titles
    2) No wins against NC State
    3) No bowl wins (after 2010 victories are forfeited)

Did I leave out any more notable “accomplishments?”
