Orlando Early to join staff

Full link.

Early started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in 1993. He left in 1995 to start a three-year stint at Western Carolina. From 1998-2001 he was the coach at Charlotte under Bobby Lutz. During that time Early established a reputation as a good recruiter.

“When he was at Charlotte and Alabama he was kind of known as the top recruiter on the staff,” Cloninger noted. “When he was head coach at ULM, he did the same thing. He got some kids that normally would have gone out of state or maybe go to a Texas school to stick around and play for little old ULM and ended up winning the conference one year.”

..and yes, if barnes does return.. the holes will be tough and will be one of the favorites to win it all. and they might? perhaps there will be some teams (ncsu) that can expose the weaknesses of running up and down the court like maniacs? i like up tempo, but i think if this is really what ol roy’s bball is all about.. simply taking the ball out of the net and getting into transition.. then it’s stoppable. and we’re likely to see a ton of it from them next year. they SUCK in half court offense..

i’m all for being stout defensively!! especially in the paint, i haven’t seen that in forever in raleigh! i’m tired of those aces dunking on our guys! i totally respect the transition game.. and believe it starts with defense.. i just think teams like unx that live and die from it have weaknesses.

i don’t see any reason why we are going to bring up any of our past coaches at the point.. even sloan or case! brand new coach, brand new conversation.. it really shouldn’t come up unless things are going badly!

We need a ‘grandfather’ Gene Keady/Bobby Knight-type defensive-minded, kick your teeth in kind of sage on the bench… with a ton of end-game, last second set knowledge to make it over the top in this league.

    howlie: to a 17-year-old recruit,
any coach who is over 29
    qualifies as a ‘grandfather’.

Towe is not “owed” is correct, but if we are as moral and ethical as we pretend to be when we bash the UNX’ers, then we will NOT “Phil Ford” Monte Towe. He has a LOT of potential and can be an asset to the AD’s dept or the WPC. Since he has NO Jimmy V. DNA (except what might have rubbed off from Sidney), even the Alumni Association might pick him up. I would THEN send them money again….I will not bore you with their mis-management of the Caldwell Scholar’s scholarships or their inept and shipshod controls and WASTE of money.

Jim Harrick….ah yes, we need him…..like I need another computer to maintain. Folks are already making jokes about our “white” Santa and coparing MG to Blake. That obviously is only the UNX prattle as they nervously wait for the certified letter from the NCAA.

Jim Harrick is the Darth Sidious of NCAA College Basketball. He make Cal and Perle (Sp?) and the others look like sunday school teachers. Please, please do NOT give the press more fodder.

After watching Scott Woods’ comments last night, MG has to focus on retention FIRST….Staffing SECOND and Recruiting THIRD. Mark did not immediately, I think, say YES on Monday night and the situation looked bleak….thus the email. It was hastily written and had the unintended consequences of “fragging” the team. I hope that Debbie, and I trust she has, has met with them and they are clear where she is coming from.

So that is what I think….others will differ and we shall continue to discuss.

Twill be interesting to see of John Swoffard comes out of his shell to respond. He is hunkered down awaiting the NCAA response to YOU KNOW WHO’s Trangressions and will keep a LOW (lower than a serpent’s belly…) posture.

    GO PACK. Welcome Mark!

    john of sparta,

I don’t always share your views….and you may not always share mine….

BUT, you nailed it. You could have been the creater of the McDonald’s Bird, Howard and James spot….

They really did NOT know who could have “eaten their lunch”. As David Glenn or Adam Gold put it, when MG resigned from AL, CJL probably could not have named 5 college coaches…but he knew the ESPN folks….

That spot was pure genius and has gotten almost 3 Million (more than the gary williams debbie yow feud search) “watched” on YouTube.

    Good call…

My first question for our new coaches is: Can you design a play to get Scott Wood open?”

  9. Wolfy__79 04/07/2011 at 12:03 PM #

i just don’t see any of our players leaving. with MG having recruited a few of our players already, i’d think that makes a pretty natural transition into them staying. with cjw, lorenzo, cjl and cjl all sounding pretty interested in the new coach.. i don’t see their friends/teammates jumping ship. harrow seems to be the only one put off a bit, but i still don’t see him leaving either!

  10. Wolfy__79 04/07/2011 at 12:05 PM #

imo, a play isn’t needed to get scott open.. he needs to be developed to create on his own and experience an offense that doesn’t require him to race off screens for all of his offense. he may never be one that will break you down off the dribble, but i think he can still manage to create offense on his own..

Roo, what did Wood say? I can’t find that on the net.

    True story:

After I left State, I ended up finishing my undergrad at Pfeiffer College, just outside of nowhere in (exceptionally) rural Stanly County. (Put it this way: for fun on the weekends, people went to Salisbury.) I worked for the Athletic Department there, so I got to know the coaches (all 5 of them…) pretty well.

Anyway, Rob Moxley was the assistant basketball coach there at the time. And while I admit to knowing absolutely nothing about what responsibilities the assistant coaches will have (or how well anyone will perform those responsibilities), I can absolutely tell you that Rob is one heckuva great person. If he ends up at State (and assuming the years haven’t changed him, and I hope they have not), we’ll have a teacher and a role model on the bench. That idea excited me tremendously.

    Rochester,
I watched the news last night…twice…once on WRAL and once on Fox50. I could NOT find the whole video clip. They interviewed David Thompson, CJL, Harrow and Brown. Then there was the Scott Wood comment.

I told my wife about it and she had read it in the N&O. He looked a little miffed and disappointed that they were so bad and needed to be “rebuilt”. He is a pretty level headed young guy….quite savvy. He was the one that openly told the press that they could not do anything about what was going to happen to Coach Lowe as it was “all political now”. He, IMO, is somewhat the “level headed, maybe the ARTICULATE voice” of the team. I do NOT know if speaks for all of them, but he has a good insight and answers questions in the good old Indiana plain spoken voice.

So, it was as much…at least to me….his demeanor and the comments. That is what I posted what I did.

Here is the text from the N&O….I thought you could find EVERY NEWS CAST on the net….but maybe not so….

Perhaps others who are more WRAL site savvy can assist us both and tell us where it is.

QUOTE from N&O Article….Sophomore Wolfpack guard Scott Wood thought the team was in better shape, with four starters back from a 15-16 team, than Yow’s assessment in the email.

“With this team, I don’t think there’s any reason to rebuild,” Wood said. “You have all the talent there. I was kind of confused by what she meant by it.”

Wood said the only thing he knew about Gottfried was that he won at his two previous stops

i rate scott wood as one of if not the top bball iq on the team. it kills me to see someone like him not fitting into the mix offensively! i can’t say it’s just a matter of drawing up plays to get him open looks.. i think he’s a heck of a player and i compare him to a reggie miller in the nba! watching him play, i know he’s got the court presence to compete on both levels and a cheerful jarring personality in the back n forth with the officials!

i agree with scott on accounts of the team doesn’t need to rebuild. i only add that they need to be polished up with strong conditioning and fundamental cohesiveness. that defined only means that yes the fundamentals may have been taught to some degree.. but never was evident in game play.. therefore, i’m looking to see each member of the team display a higher level of fundamental play… versus having one or two at the time involved with what’s going on on the floor.

  15. Rochester 04/07/2011 at 2:37 PM #

Wood is my favorite guy on the team for a few reasons, which you guys touched on. He’s smart, he’s got a much better idea than most what he needs to be doing, and he busts his ass all the time. I sure hope he’s happy enough to stick around, because I like watching him play.

I also agree with his assessment. This team is not so broken that it needs to be rebuilt. They just need someone to teach them the fundamentals and get them to play hard and together. There’s plenty of talent here. There’s no reason they can’t finish near the top of the conference next year with the roster on hand. They could have and should have this year if Lowe and Co. had coached them up.

  16. sundropdrinker13 04/07/2011 at 2:48 PM #

Ok, Coach G made a comment at the press conference that he didn’t look at this as a rebuild, but more of a “transition”. Also, if I remember correctly, Yow said that it was other coaches view that this was a rebuild. Coach G’s comment about this being a “transition” I thought would be more than sufficient for most folks, as whenever there is a new coach, of course there is transition. Would it have better if he had come out and said that this is not a rebuild? Possibly. It sure would have made a lot of State fans feel better.

I feel that the reason that he did not come out and say that, however, is due to the fact that, even though we have the talent here and in next years class, they were not coached up the way that they should have been. It might take til year 2 until we get the results that we want to see. I think he doesn’t want to raise our expectation level for the first year.

We State fans have the tendency to see the green grass on the other side, and want that for ourselves. We just want our own green grass NOW, and don’t want to have to wait for it to grow strong roots. We have some damned good seeds planted, we just have to take proper care of them and then we will have our own green grass. Maybe not next season, but definitely in the second year.

I read an article stating our win-loss record against the Blue Brothers for the past 11-12 years, and I was horrified. We are 6-34 against Puke, and have only won 11 games against the Bungholes, 4 of which were when they were under Daugherty. Coach G might not do great against them, but I for one would settle for close to .500 against them.

We just need to let Coach G and his assistants do their job. For the first time in my 32 years of existence, I am actually excited about Wolfpack basketball, and I will actually watch a few games this next season.

Any updates on filling the two remaining assistant positions?

  18. PackerInRussia 04/07/2011 at 3:15 PM #

“BUT FOR GOD SAKES I WANT ONE THING FROM OUR SENDEK DAYS….
    BRING BACK FREE THROW SHOOTING!!!”

That’s it! You’ve got the answer, my friend! Bring back Herb as an assistant! He can be the “free throw guru.” I can’t think of anything else that would fire up the fanbase.

  19. PackerInRussia 04/07/2011 at 3:18 PM #

Wasn’t Scott Wood the one who commented about the team being bad after some of their losses?

  20. NCMike 04/07/2011 at 3:27 PM #

    Who is Cailey Scruggs?

  21. Wolfy__79 04/07/2011 at 3:29 PM #

i think i’m more impatient about who our assistants are going to be versus head coach!

i’ve heard both wood and lorenzo point out some of the obvious negative things about the team.. and both of them are some of my favorites on the team.. lozo, wood and cjw are good leaders heading into next season..

i’ll be totally refreshed with other teams saying what are we going to do to stop this or that guy at nc state! …instead of saying that ourselves..

I have read and listened to the player’s comments and they seem to me to reflect potential playing time.

Wood played more than anyoen thus has the most to lose in a coaching change, clearly expressed his love for Lowe why not Sid played him the most. No doubt at times we were better with him off the floor, his timing and shot selection were bad at times plus he never looked for his shot other than the three most all the time. Wood has the PT to lose of anyone in a coaching change.

Harrow. Been called overrated by many. Looking over his shoulder as frankly Brown played better at times and now a point guard may want to transfer in.

Brown. Excited, he should be a good coach will play him if he really better than Harrow and his excitement tells me he must think so.

Howell. New system fits him perfectly. PT going up. Excited.

Leslie. Entered the year a potential lottery pick. Don’t see him projected that high anymore, he didn’t mature very much as a player throughout the year still a very raw talent. Watching the progression of him vs Barnes at UNC was night and day. Now he stuck, transfer and lose a year or go into the draft and hope to get drafted. His best path is to stay, so we shall see. A new coach is actually the best thing that could have happened to him.

Just my thoughts on the players that have commented.

I’ll say it right now- Jim Harrick is the LAST person we need associated with this program. The guy’s a proven cheater and based on the perception (not mine) some have of this program, that you’ve got to cheat at NCSU to win, no good could come out of this. Believe me, I’d rather have Lowe, Sendeck, Towe, Les, Harris, the whole bunch back before bringing in Jim Harrick to this program.

Have you folks who like this idea lost your minds? Good grief!!!!!!!!

I’m not worried about our perception. I just worry about wins and losses. If he can bring us some wins, bring him on board. The rest takes care of itself.

We have been chasing the perception stuff for decades and have never gotten any respect either locally or nationally. Hiring Harrick won’t change anything. They won’t even ask unc any tough questions, but they try to rake us over the coals when presenting a brand new hire. Screw chasing perceptions…doesn’t matter.
