Orlando Early to join staff

Full link.

Early started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in 1993. He left in 1995 to start a three-year stint at Western Carolina. From 1998-2001 he was the coach at Charlotte under Bobby Lutz. During that time Early established a reputation as a good recruiter.

“When he was at Charlotte and Alabama he was kind of known as the top recruiter on the staff,” Cloninger noted. “When he was head coach at ULM, he did the same thing. He got some kids that normally would have gone out of state or maybe go to a Texas school to stick around and play for little old ULM and ended up winning the conference one year.”

I will give him a chance. If in 5 years we don’t make the NCAA, then his ass is gone. Of course next year the heels will be contenders for it all especially if Harrison Barnes returns. Did I mention I hate those bastards.

I’m still waiting for the best group of Asst’s in the nation as Yow stated in the presser.

    What am I missing?

^It never hurts to repeat it, tucker.

I don’t think Towe or Lowe are owed jobs or opportunities going forward, but I do think they are owed unreserved gratitude, respect, and appreciation, and they should be treated with the same class and dignity with which they handled themselves throughout their tenure and departure.

I hope, like it was said earlier, they feel not a shred of separation from NCSU, as they are as big a part of our tradition as anybody – far more than any of us fans. If I’m Sid, I’d probably feel a little miffed about being thrown under the bus, but I think he’s a bigger man than I am, so maybe not.

I also wouldn’t feel bad at all to have Monte involved in the WPC or elsewhere, but probably time for fresh blood, and besides, Gottfried obviously needs no constraints placed on him.to make his own staff.

It is with regret that we see our “family” leave, ie Sidney, Monte, Harris. But it is time to move on. The current players that return do not need the former comfort zone. They, too, need to move on and develop under new conditions. I have no problem with putting our former staff assistants in WPC or other functions not related to “hands-on” team development and recruiting. Let MG do his job with his own staff and breathe some fresh air into a stagnant program. Go Pack.

    I want this guy

    http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/stephens_dwayne00.html#_

    or

    this guy

    http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/garland_mike00.html#_

From Tom Izzo’s staff. They can teach our kids to rebound. Pay them more than the head coach, if you have to. It will be worth the investment.

Just watched the entire press conference for the first time, and I was determined to watch it as objectively as a proud alum and die-hard fan could manage. Bottom line – I was impressed. He is definitely the most articulate coach we have ever had with the possible exception of Herb, but Gottfried has the added bonus of not putting his listeners to sleep when he speaks. The other thing that stood out from the press conference – Debbie Yow’s remarks about Gary Williams stood out like a sore thumb; very inappropriate.

Gottfried did not say a single thing that gave me pause. Saddle up and go for it boys!

I think SC’s Anthony Gill was wavering on his commitment about a month ago, and I also believe Early was his main recruiter. I wonder if there is an opportunity here?

Sounds like Mark is lining the cage with recruiters… good with that b/c talent is huge.

However, I want to see a serious defensive X-O guy on the staff. Defensive numbers on Gottfried’s career are not very impressive and I think we’ll need an upgrade if we want to be consistent winners in the ACC. As stated by many, I don’t care if we run or not… but nobody in the ACC has ever gotten along for very long on offense alone.

lol, can’t see the big deal about what she said…she had to clear the air because of all the constant questions.

good for her, sick of State being crapped on and never saying jack squat….we won’t get positive spin out of anything we do so we might as well do what we darn well please

eff em all…glad we got Gottfried anyway…he has something to prove as well, I hope he pisses off everyone as well

Gaudio is known as defensive coach. As well as a recruiter

  11. ringo 04/06/2011 at 10:46 PM #

people were saying Gaudio is not happening…anyone heard anything about this?

So Coach Gottfried has hired Rob Moxley? Can SFN substantiate this? This would be VERY good news.

  13. JeremyH 04/06/2011 at 11:16 PM #

The coaching staff might end up really good, it might not. Right now I think we can all agree it is much too Early.

gene keady to SJU = Jim Harrick to NCSU 😉

i’m happy to see things coming together for our team. i think that gaudio would be a great hire for his defensive acumen. that said, i’m a little confused about everyone bashing lowe’s x’s and o’s knowledge. i was never worried about his knowledge of the game, and i thought his x’s and o’s were one of his strengths in his first years (i missed all of last season living in idaho has its regional broadcast disadvantages). when he had a competent point guard he ran the high pick and roll offense, no doubt because of his nba background, but after atsur left he didn’t possess any guards with, enough basketball iq to read the correct lane off the pick and so he had to abandon it for some sort of high motion offense (not really my favorite brand of basketball). I feel like given the time he’d have gotten the way that college offenses need to be played differently because help defense works so differently than it does in the pro’s (i.e. no help defense thus all the isolation in the nba).

all that said i’m optimistic about next season and maybe we can pick up some nice wins and make a run at the tourney, or at least a good show at the nit. BUT FOR GOD SAKES I WANT ONE THING FROM OUR SENDEK DAYS….
BRING BACK FREE THROW SHOOTING!!! i feel like a lot of our problems over the last few years boil down to poor discipline (shot selection, stupid fouls, etc.) and very untimely poor free throw shooting. I’m definitely no expert these are just some things i noticed…

Jim Harrick? Interesting…. He is about 73 now. Had some issues at Georgia that are troubling, but his main focus would be coaching, he would not be running the program, ensuring kids get to class, or even recruiting on the road.

I don’t know Towe’s complete biography but from what I remember hearing through the years is that he was a highly respected assistant under Sloan at Florida and would of been a candidate for a head job until the 1989 NCAA investigation into Florida. As I recall Towe was not found to have done anything wrong but his career had been .

He spent the 90’s working his way back into coaching taking a lot of odd jobs overseas and in JUCO before taking the HC job with New Orleans in 2000. He didn’t light up the world with NO but I don’t think he was expected to. I do know that NO beat NC State at the RBC center with Towe’s players, so not too shabby.

I don’t think he is “owed” a job but I certainly hope that the NC State athletic department will do whatever they can to make sure he lands on his feet. At his age now, and being let go at State isn’t going to make it easy for him to just go out and get another job. He gave up a HC gig to come back. It didn’t work out but I do hope this works out for him.

This is the difference between history and tradition. State has great history, or eras, but the tradition is pretty weak.

Larry Harris is already gone. I never saw that man smile and other than Hodge I don’t remember ever seeing any other NC State player smile. That is a big problem in a team sport.

Saying Harrick had some issues at Georgia is kind of low balling things. He had issues at ucla and one of the all time slime ball coaches of all time.

  19. rtpack24 04/07/2011 at 9:14 AM #

Jim Harrick joins our staff in any capacity we are asking no begging for trouble. Gottfried has been a head coach for 14yrs he sould not need an advisor. Harrick track record with the NCAA is not good by anyone’s standards.

  20. ringo 04/07/2011 at 9:20 AM #

bring on Harrick. I want to win and he’s a winner. I don’t care what other programs think

  21. beavis214 04/07/2011 at 9:21 AM #

Larry Harris never smiled and I am with everyone that thinks they need a total cleansing of the house. I feel MF is going to give it his all and he will turn The Wolfpack BB Nation around within 2 years. I fully expect to go dancing next year. Now its up to the kids on the team to show why they think they can play college BB and not just be happy they have scholarships.

I will say that I am sad to see Monte go. He is a class act and I hope that his future works out for him.
DEBBIE GOOD JOB ON GETTING US SOME WINNERS!

  23. ryebread 04/07/2011 at 9:51 AM #

Not no, but @#()$*@#$ no to Jim Harrick. He managed to get UCLA and Georgia on probation and not for minor stuff either. Remember the “how many points does a 3 pointer generate?” final exam? That’s Harrick.

from what i’ve heard in MG’s only public appearance so far is that he’s been learning and moving on from his career ups/downs. i like that. i viewed the press conference in its entirety yesterday.. and read where he lacks charisma in some articles? i think its the opposite. i’ve also read that he’s a “TOB hire?” not sure about that either, to me he is clearly not a TOB type in personality.. much more engaging IMO.

as far as the staff he’ll put together, i wish i could say i’m able to evaluate it as well as football.. i.e. when we landed tenuta i was thrilled. from what i read i see this addition as a recruiting one. i’m good with recruiting, i love the guys we have now and would love to see the staff be able to swing for the fences every year! i also like the feeling i have that this guy embraces his players as family, to be their role model and get them ready for life! now that is comparable to TOB imo.

first and foremost… noone has more to prove than DY! right along side her is MG… but at the end of the day, NC STATE has alot to showcase! all things working together, this should be huge. it’s taken me a a day or two to wrap my head around the state of state.. but i’m HAPPY.

Talent is important but so is coaching. See Butler or VCU or NCSU
