Orlando Early to join staff

Full link.

Early started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in 1993. He left in 1995 to start a three-year stint at Western Carolina. From 1998-2001 he was the coach at Charlotte under Bobby Lutz. During that time Early established a reputation as a good recruiter.

“When he was at Charlotte and Alabama he was kind of known as the top recruiter on the staff,” Cloninger noted. “When he was head coach at ULM, he did the same thing. He got some kids that normally would have gone out of state or maybe go to a Texas school to stick around and play for little old ULM and ended up winning the conference one year.”

I know SFN posted we had a top 15 recruiting ranking from 1998 to present. The one constant was Larry Harris.

It will be interesting to see what his absence will mean to recruitment.

Monte Towe’s name has been removed from Gopack.com, along with Levi Watkins.

I can live with Towe having to find a job on his own. He’s been in coaching a very long time and knows the breaks.

Levi Watkins was a young Wolfpacker, who wanted to get into coaching. I wish we would help him out, because it will help our brand to have good alumni coaches in the ranks at any level.

Monte and Sid hold a really special place in our collective heart. They fell short as coaches, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. I wish good things for them, and I hope that neither one of them feels even the tiniest bit of estrangement from their Wolfpack family.

Player discontent has been well documented in our program since 1998 also and the one constant was Larry Harris also.

Coach Towe deserves a spot with NC State Basketball and NC State University. He is a Wolfpack legend that offers a tremendous amount to any program or institution. He was honored to return to State when Sidney came on board and he accepted the responsibility with holding the program together after Sidney stepped down. We will probably never fully understand the work and effort he put in especially with keeping the current players and future prospects interested in the Pack during this period. I hope Ms. Yow and company did not simply use him during our time in need just to discard him now that we have Coach Gottfried on board, Coach Towe deserves better! I’m 100% behind Coach Gottfried but I’m also 100% behind Coach Towe, do the right thing Ms. Yow……Monte is NC State!!!!!

Larry Harris needs to find a new home. Thanks your time, Larry, but we need to bring in coaches who will lead us to a higher level of success.

    And Monte? Please.

This entire process has been long and drawn out and at first I was skeptical about the hire but the more and more I read and the more and more I think about it, I think that this will be a good hire for State. I like the Orlando Early hire and if we can bring in Dino and Pearson from UGA that will be an all-star cast. We will continue to have great recruiting and at this point anyone is a step above Sid when it comes to X’s and O’s. I hope that we retain Levi in some capacity and I wouldn’t mind bringing in Jules as an end of the bench coach if he is done playing. I hope that the rest of State fans can give Gottfried the support that he needs.

thank you sidney, monte and even larry harris. i’m glad each of you are forever a part of the wolfpack family. but imo, i strongly feel MG needs his own staff.. not anyone from previous regimes to make a clean transition.

about Gottfried in general. after the initial sticker shock i had, i took some time to research his resume.. it is not bad at all. he’s not bd, sm or barnes.. but i think he resides in good company with his accomplishments.

i like that he did well at murray state, stepped up to bama and was successful there.. and this is a huge step up to the acc and nc state platform.. each of the other two jobs he’s risen to success. i hope he knocks it out of the park with his staff.. which i would like SFN to grade at bama and murray.. and see how his nc state staff stacks up. maybe there was a shortfall with his resources at bama.. we definetly didn’t marry a stripper on this one… i’m HAPPY..

    Maybe Archie will hire Levi.

    Good karma keeps flowing…
Enough of this obsessive analysis of Yow. She stepped in it. So f’ing what? I’m not perfect either. We all knew she was high strung and we all know Sweatygary is an asshole extraordinaire. Let’s move on.

Is the contrast to the last coaching search not completely evident?

Let’s review the last 24 hours: The Orlando Early hire is excellent. Great recruiter and high level assistant coach (maybe to replace the Harris loss). Coach Gottfried is wasting no time assembling his staff and that is exactly what we need. Defensive strategist should be next.
Couple that with the statement from Cully Payne, starting guard for Iowa, that he wants to transfer to NC State BECAUSE of Coach Gottfried…

Now let’s compare. Five years ago we had to wait while our new coach finished up his college degree and took a college coaching “test” before he could do anything.

Stop giving all the Seth Davis/Greg Doyel/Gary Parrish’s of the world any fuel about our collective insanity. Accentuate the positive and let’s focus on the good things going on and you might be surprised by this fall…

I also could not help but think at how much nicer Yow’s floor is compared to Fowlers. Comical to think our new coach was finishing online courses before he could even begin speaking to recruits. After he does finish it is the dead period for recruiting. Might as well hired a ghost.

This guy already has a solid transfer on the hook, known as a good recruiter, knows the area, took a football school to the elite eight setting a high-water mark for the program, is assembling a staff known for recruiting.

    Night and day difference.

Not too excited by Early’s write-up (my only source), but the bio on Rob Moxley looks really strong.

  15. highstick 04/06/2011 at 6:45 PM #

The hire upset a few Gamechicken fans, so maybe that’s a positive. Horne’s having problems there and maybe Early saw a good opportunity.

Sorry, but we had absolutely “no coaching” in the last 5 years. Monte and Sid will always be favorites with the fans, including me, but coaching was not a strong point for either.

Clean house and don’t look back!

great news to here from this possible transfer!

i hope to keep the entire current roster in tact and it will be a good measurement to me for MG if there’s no jumping ship.

i cannot say losing any of these players would be good, and i welcome this iowa kid if he comes. i hope to keep our signees as well? i’m not sure if that makes sense scholly wise?

with the current roster + another pg… the bench will be loaded!

This is exactly what they need. Some things happening right away and positive news. That will help people get on board. I like it.

  19. Rochester 04/06/2011 at 8:00 PM #

^Yeah, I’m getting more psyched. I hope all the players stick around. Things should take a turn for the positive now and it would be great if they were all still here for it.

  20. LarryWorsley 04/06/2011 at 8:07 PM #

It would be nice if they could find a place for Monte connected to the University, maybe with the Wolfpack club, or something? Sid will find an assistant job in the NBA, I think.

  21. sautz 04/06/2011 at 8:10 PM #

I would love for Gaudio to be the third, but I am very happy with the first two hires so far. Strong recruiters with area ties. Plus, Early was with Gottfried in his best years at Alabama.

  22. gtspack 04/06/2011 at 8:18 PM #

If you don’t count MG’s last two years at Alabama he has an awesome resume. I too am starting to get past the sticker shock and starting to feel better about things. Even that being said DY needs to maintain a good relationship with Archie M.

  23. Radman 04/06/2011 at 8:21 PM #

We seem to be getting good recruiters on staff. But who is gonna TEACH defense and rebounding?

  24. motorhead 04/06/2011 at 8:26 PM #

Monte should not be connected to the team in any way.Time for a fresh start.

  25. jinx99champs 04/06/2011 at 8:38 PM #

I would only advocate keeping Towe or Harris or levi around if it will help secure our players and signees. From what I’ve heard I’m not worried about Brown or Harrow. I’m hopeful that Leslie will stay. I think he needs to develop more anyway. I know Sid and Monte are disappointed, but if there truly are no hard feelings the best thing they can do for the pack at this point is help keep the players there. i think they have done that. I think privately (no real info here just a hunch) they put things in perspective for the players and are going to help them through the transition.

Side bar: I feel good about Gottfried and I think he needs our support. So on that note, moderators, I don’t the need to undermine the fan support by putting up little surveys asking us to “grade” the hire. anything less than an A+ only has the potential to show a lack of support. I don’t mind free discourse and I’m not trying to censor anybody. But those survey type things are coming from the organization behind this website not the random reader or fan. My two cents.
