Dave Glenn says 1st offer to Rick Barnes last time was for less $$$ than he was making at Texas

Glenn on Barnes(not exact words):

-State threw the kitchen sink at Barnes the 2nd offer. Here is the difference between doing it professionally and doing it poorly. The last offer to Barnes was a huge offer. The reality is that the 1st offer from State to Barnes was less than he was making at the Longhorns. Are you kidding me? You want to alienate a candidate? Are you kidding me?….when you are a lesser job, a lesser company then you have to do the convincing. How can your 1st offer be less money than what you are currently making when State was a lateral move where he and his family were established?

The idea that your 1st offer was less compensation is embarrassing and laughable. If you act like a buffoon, then people won’t want to latch themselves onto a buffoon and the rest of the search snowballed from that point with embarrassing public nos.

Yow won’t make the same mistakes.

Sean Miller & I have had good talks. He has zero interest in any job openings. We will have no further comment. Let’s go beat Memphis!

Click here for live audio of the Dave Glenn show.

He is about to interview Mike Decourcy who wrote this article yesterday saying Sean Miller wasn’t interested in the NC State job.

With the N.C. State head coaching job at last open, Arizona coach Sean Miller will not be interested in the position.

A source close to the U of A program told Sporting News that Miller does not want the job of replacing Sidney Lowe, who resigned Tuesday. Miller is pleased with the rapid development of the program at Arizona, which resulted in a Pacific-10 Conference championship in his second season.

So far today, Dave Glenn has called Debbie Yow one of the best athletic directors in the country despite what Gary Williams and journalist/Dookie John Feinstein have had to say about her.

___________________________________________________________

Nothing earth shattering here. Decourcy gave the same spiel why coaches won’t take our job. He mentioned that Sean Miller has no reason to leave although I didn’t hear him mention family ties to NC that definitely exist. He also mentioned UNC and Duke being obstacles even though Sendek’s own performance at ASU has proven that being near Duke and UNC was actually a huge advantage for him as a coach. Sendek’s recruiting has dropped off significantly since he moved thousands of miles away from Roy Williams and Coach K.

He did mention Mick Cronin as a good hire for NC State.

I saw someone put this together somewhere else that highlights just how attractive NC State is to top level recruits even with boring personalities like Herb Sendek and a failing, inexperienced coach like Sidney Lowe.

Here are Sendek’s classes:

1st class – Thornton(top 60), Wells, Gainey (Sendek got the commitment from Thornton)
2nd class – Miller(top40), Inge(top 60), Ron Kelly(top 60), C. Williams. R. Thomas, Ron Anderson(?),
3rd class – Adam Harrison(#25), K. Bean(#64), Anthony Grundy, Anthony Grundy(1st team all-ACC)
4th class – M. Williams(#33), D. Wilkins(#11), C. Crawford(#81)
5th class – S. Sherril(#38), M. Melvin(#98), Mike Bell(#95), Trey Guidry
6th class – Hodge(#7), Evtimov, Powell(#65), Collins and Watkins(#60)
7th class – Flatt, Mejia, Simons, Bennerman(#84)
8th class – Atsur(top 50), Mike O’Donell
9th class – Grant(#78), C. Simmons(#34), Brackman(#60)
10th class – Costner(#22), Fells(#35), McCauley
11th class – D. Werner(#94), L. Davis, D. Horner

Lowe’s top 100 players:
#9 JJ Hickson
#62 Tracy Smith
#60 Richard Howell
#80 D. Painter
#12 CJ Leslie
#22 Ryan Harrow
#26 Lorenzo Brown

^^ The thing about Barnes is that the timing might be right. People in Texas may be wanting more if he doesn’t go deep this year. I don’t know what the future looks like in Texas but after all these years without a championship he is just a hick-up away from being asked to leave.

I think his contract goes through 2012-2013 which means he will be up for negotiations this year because he has more value because people know he is a top NC State choice.

If we offer Barnes $3 million for five years (is this the max for state of nc contract?) it would mean Texas would have to match. Do they really want to invest that kind of money for another 5 years? I would say yes if he makes it to Great 8 (old school) or better this year.

If Barnes falls in the 2nd or 3rd round, people in Texas may be ready to go out and find a fresh face that can “win a championship”.

Think Roy at Kansas, he didn’t leave when Gut retired but he was ready to move a few years later, still without a championship. Yow can point to Roy’s two rings since leaving Kansas for the Triangle.

Agree with hball57. It would be nice to have a young boy genius coach instead of someone like Barnes who will soon be getting a little long in the tooth (although if Barnes is interested, we just about would have to welcome him here). Then, 25 years from now, when our boy genius is all grown up, I would like to hear the journalists tell UNC and Duke that they should be satisfied with mediocrity because they can’t hope to compete with State’s hall of fame coach. Will never happen though, as long as UNC keeps spitting out graduates from its journalism school.

If I had my pick, I really don’t think I’d want Barnes this time around. Call me crazy but a guy like Miller has more upside. You know what you are going to get with Barnes. He’d make us very competitive but he would not beat Duke and UNC consistently. He bows down to Kansas every year. I also think a guy like Miller can make this job their lifetime job, whereas with Barnes it is just another stop (and probably his last) along the way to retirement.

  4. ringo 03/16/2011 at 4:23 PM #

I’d rather have Miller more than Barnes too. Miller is still a slightly higher risk for failure though.

  5. newt 03/16/2011 at 4:28 PM #

I would want Barnes because he has megaclout with top-10 recruits right now. NC State would be instantly significant. If Barnes would come, we’d be crazy not to have him.

That’s like saying I’d rather the following people show up at my house tonight while I’m asleep, in this order: Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, and then the Tooth Fairy.

They’re all awesome, some just a little less awesome.

Hopefully with Rick Barnes spoiling Texas this last decade, perhaps the Longhorns are getting big headed about their school? Perhaps they believe that 5-stars WANT to come to Texas and not to Rick Barnes? Auburn has that same mentality and it worked out for them.

I hope we get a young up and coming coach, that will be here for a long time. Now is the time that the next Everette Case, Dean Smith, or Caoch K can be hired. Roy and K most likely will only coach another 5 years. Which means now is the time for the rise of the next great ACC coach and dominant program. Maryland and NCSU are the two other schools in the ACC most likely to fill those shoes in basketball. UNC and Duke are both headed to some post Roy and K blues. The time is now to hire the next great ACC coaching legend!

Here is some food for thought, quoted from an article by Dave Telep…

“Since 1990, 31 coaches signed five or more McDonald’s All-Americans, which in itself is an impressive statistic. However, of those 31 coaches, 15 won national championships. Basically, half the guys collected the talent; the other half haven’t been able to cash in on it yet. This group of coaches is responsible for producing the last 20 national titles.

It would make sense that a four-time NCAA champion, Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Famer would own the distinction of signing the most game participants since 1990. Coach K signed an astonishing 41 kids from this game and Roy Williams is second after signing 33 during his time at Kansas and North Carolina. The next tier, with 13 apiece, is John Calipari, Rick Barnes, Billy Donovan and Dean Smith (he contributed countless more before 1990). Bill Self signed a dozen and Rick Pitino has 11 to his credit. The only other double-digit coaches with 10 each are Jim Boeheim, Steve Fisher, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta.

If a college coach were to sign eight or more McDonald’s participants in his career, he would have a 73 percent chance at winning the national championship. Since 1990, 15 coaches reached the magic number eight and 11 of them won national titles.”

So is it coaching or is it recruiting that is most important?

  11. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/16/2011 at 5:00 PM #

Shaka Smart is an interesting name to include if State goes for the young gun. He obviously isn’t a top 3 pick but if Yow has to start looking at other names… Heck he got an at large bid with Virginia Commonwealth this year.

That statement can’t be right – Gary Williams. But still…

  14. Lunatic Fringe 03/16/2011 at 5:30 PM #

Daily – I think it is coaching. The team this year shows you can have a world of talent and still be unsuccessful without a good game day coach. I also tend to believe winning in the ACC will assist in recruiting.

    Yes.

We’ve got to find someone that is up and coming. Miller is going to stay in AZ, Tubby Smith ain’t the answer, and I was recently informed that Barnes left Clemson after he had had an affair with anything that moved in Clemson and while I don’t know the validity of these allegations, if that’s the case, he certainly isn’t a very good compliment to TOB and what he’s establishing for the Pack. Regardless, Barnes isn’t the answer to our problems. Surely there is someone out there that wants this job and salivates at the thought of getting to play on Tobacco Road year in and year out…. it seems like everyone is just scared to face K and Ol’ Roy…. but someone will step up and we’ll get it right this time just like we got it right with TOB in the midst of all the Bill Cowher and Norm Chow chatter. I hate to see Sid go but he had his chance and it didn’t work out; plus, he belongs in the league teaching young players to be better ball players and to be good men. I think we all need to think about getting on base this time rather than slugging a grand slam with this new coach, because y’all all know we’ve been doing nothing but striking out over and over again for the last 5 years. I’m psyched, Go Pack!

  18. Daily Update 03/16/2011 at 6:13 PM #

    Sidney Lowe and Paul Hewitt.

  19. choppack1 03/16/2011 at 6:21 PM #

DU – I think Hewitt is OK. His team at least plays hard defensively, they just play horrid offense in the halfcourt (one of the reason his teams struggled vs. Sendek.)

As bad as Lee Fowler was, Oblinger was worse. He gave him a damn award and an extension.

One of the strange and no doubt unintentional results of the Lowe hire is that I think the State job is more attractive now than when Lowe took it. I know this may seem counter-intuitive, but a few points:

    (1) Despite the 5-year run of NCAA tournaments, State was on the cusp of a “down” year (meaning unlikely to make the NCAA) that season, which may well have contributed to Herb’s timing in leaving. Incoming coaches can recognize that and no one wants to come in with high expectations knowing that there is a bit of a set-up with the first year or two. State looked like less of a rebuilding job than it actually was at that time. OTOH, with a solid if not spectacular base of talent on hand (and I’m excluding CJL, we’ll see about him), in the short term I think State is less of a rebuilding job than it was when Herb left. That short term (first 2-3 years) can be critical in the current day and age and don’t think coaches don’t take that into consideration.

    (2) Five years ago, Roy & K were a decade from relinquishing their oligarchy over the ACC. Now they are about 5 years away, if that. I know you guys get your feathers ruffled about the not wanting/able to compete with the blue bloods thing, but there really is an opening now that anyone who takes the job can see — that light at the end of the tunnel is the gap for some one to step in and wrest control of the ACC, not the head lamp of a two-headed national juggernaut. The transition from Dean Smith demonstrated that it not automatic that a top program survive and there is no apparent succession plan at dook or UNC. The moment your new coach *should* hit his stride is the moment the conference opens wide for the taking. So the short and long term prospects are better now.

    (3) Given the reasonable amount of talent left, the pathetic results of the last five years give the in-coming coach cover to remake the team in his image over the next two years. A 7-win ACC season will be a first in six years … not saying your new coach will aim low, but that sure gives a lot of comfort to some one undertaking a rebuilding project.

    (4) Quality AD. Well, this would be more of a plus/minus due to Yow’s head-butting with GW and Fridge that may have damaged her rep in coaching circles, but nonetheless she is no buffoon, which is more than I can say for her predecessor. Plus, who really does get along with Gary and Ralph? It’s one thing to work for a strong, demanding personality; it is another to work for an idiot. Idiots tend to be unpredictable and therefor dangerous.

Otherwise, the plus/minus scale is the same (history, facilities, etc.).

Anyway, I don’t know who is a likely replacement right now, but am certain you’ll get a major improvement as HC, and as I say think the job is more enticing now than it was five years ago, so who knows. I’m hoping for two home-run hires at State and GaT b/c I loved the old ACC that faded away after about ’95. I want it back.

  21. hball57 03/16/2011 at 6:49 PM #

61 sorry so long to respond. I think there are some in our fan base that have an obsession with Barnes. I believe he is a great recruiter, but his coaching doesn’t match his ability to recruit. I think, if the next coach wins, he will bring the passion to the fan base. I think we are smarter than to fixate on one coach.

The one thing I will say is that I will trust whomever DY gets. Sometimes you just have to trust the adults in your life!

  22. Wulfpack 03/16/2011 at 6:51 PM #

I agree with all of that except the assumption that K and Roy will be out in about 5 years. K looks as energized as ever. I have no idea how much longer he has but he sure looks like he could go another decade, especially if his program keeps winning the way it has.

    nycfan: great comments.

I agree on the Duke/UNC angle, though I think it will be much more of a problem for Duke. As you know well, UNC really hasn’t had a bad season outside of Doherty since the early 1960s. UNC has tremendous institutional advantages – to me they are in the same tier as UK, KU, UCLA, and Indiana as schools that will never really be down unless the NCAA comes down on them (see Indiana now).

On the other hand, Coach K is Duke basketball. If his successor struggles, soon Duke may start looking like a small private school with a dated, tiny gym and relatively few alums.

Theres a lot of talk regarding Debbie Yow’s relationship with Gary Williams, and since blogs are notorious for their rumors, I thought I would add one that I had heard from a friend (sports writer) regarding their feud:
I HEARD that Gary Williams had been caught canoodling with a student(s) and Yow was not too thrilled.

If this is the case, good for Yow for standing by morals (and good for Gary for getting some college strange)
