Larry “with”Drew

Larry Drew II (did they have a problem with junior?) has left the UNC team effective immediately.

Rats leaving the ship or over active parent (ESPN.com)?

Official statements from WRAL.com:

Larry Drew II:

“After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I have decided it’s in my best interest to continue my education and basketball career elsewhere,” says Drew II. “I have enjoyed my time in North Carolina and appreciate the support of everyone associated with the program. Over the last three years we’ve accomplished a lot as a team and those experiences will help me not only on the court, but off the court as well.

“I’d like to thank the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play at one of the nation’s top colleges in UNC, and my teammates for their support as well. It is unfortunate my career didn’t meet expectations in Chapel Hill, however I do look forward to continuing my collegiate and athletic career in the near future.”

Roy Williams:

“This morning I spoke to Larry Drew Sr. and he informed me that it was in Larry II’s best interest to leave North Carolina at this time,” says Williams. “Personally I hate this for Larry and our team because he was such an important part of our team and he has continued to improve and played well in recent games. He was our defensive award winner in two of our last four games and has handled the ball really well in our four-game win streak.

“But I understand that families and players have to make their own decisions as to what is best for them at a particular time in their lives. He contributed a great deal to our program in his two and a half years here, including being a part of a national championship team. I regret that Larry and his family feel this is the right thing to do, but again, each individual has to do what they think is best. He will be successful wherever he chooses to go. I appreciate what he gave to our University and basketball program in his time here.”

Sounds like they are having chemistry issues over there again. Marshall stole his milk money.

But Drew has really out played Marshall in the last few games. Maybe he thinks he should be the starter now.

must be nice to have 2 4-star point guards battling it out for playing time… of course, you have to know what to do with them in the first place.

    ^definitely chemistry issues…

Almost as big a loss for them as the Wear experiment…..

i don’t understand what is to gain from leaving midseason? what else is going on with this?? in roy’s tenure at cheatU he’s only had two team w/out chemistry issues..

“I hope Drew has a taste for axle grease”

    ^yeah …

As long as UNC keeps winning this will be of no consequence. The strength is obviously in the post over there, and Barnes is shaping up to be an all-acc caliber player inside and out. This certainly hurts their depth.

Whoever the other point guard on the team is has to be ecstatic.

^That’s an issue now. Marshall and Drew have been sharing time at PG. Looks like Strickland will have to move over and share time with Marshall. That’s not ideal for a team playing as well as they have been the past six weeks.

I think the NBA selfish player attitude has finally started to trickle down to the college level. A growing number of players seem to be much more interested in their own stats and highlight reels than in the team performance. This is the difference we are seeing in watching the “big name” teams play in the last several years. I only see it getting worse, and maybe even hitting closer to home.

Fist the Wear twins and now this clown? Yep, ‘Ol Roy runs a tight ship. I can’t remember in the last 35 years this many holes jumping from the vaunted ship unx…and in the middle of the year? Give me a break.

what does it say about the state of our program that we lost to these guys by 20?

  15. Wolfy__79 02/04/2011 at 5:00 PM #

this says nothing about our program to me.. it wasn’t superior guard play that lost the game for us.. this is another obvious sign of disconnect from hole roy and his team. it’s especially funny to me b/c of a conversation i had with a unx fan earlier this year.. he was claiming drew didn’t listen or do what roy said.. i told him, yank his scholly! he proceeded to tell me that you should not do that? haha, looks like they breed true w(h)inners over there 🙂

87 you are correct. We have seen flashes of it in raleigh over the last few years also. I think Roy’s people skills has a little to do with it as well. We have seen Roy snap, snooze and rant more than ever.

Heard on David Glenn’s radio show that Drew’s momma is a piece of work, constantly letting Roy know how she feels about her little boy’s treatment. I believe this is a case of marginal NBA talent (at best) who is deluded into thinking he is a superstar. Damien Wilkins may be a good comparison, but then again he is still making money, one ten day contract at a time.

In the MIDDLE of his JUNIOR year???

  19. bradleyb123 02/04/2011 at 5:33 PM #

Wonder if Carolina will hang his jersey in the rafters now?

  20. wolfpacker 90 02/04/2011 at 5:55 PM #

This move by this young man does not make any sense, i can understand the stress and stain of being a young man in a prime basketball program and perhaps his ego has been hurt, but what does it show in the character of this kid when in the middle of the season and his junior year and with his coach praising him that he would leave? There must be either something really strange going on in Chapel Hill with Roy Williams or this kid and his parents are truly delusional, i mean, at least finish the year and then transfer. I wonder, could it be grades????

p.s. what are our chances sat at Duke???

Won’t make any difference to the Heels, it make take a game, but Drew will be forgotten in a week.

Now if we could just get a couple of the starters to quit …

    PS – LOVE the title

Gonzo isn’t a regular starter, but he’s at the top of my “wish he’d quit” list.

  24. tuckerdorm1983 02/04/2011 at 10:14 PM #

I don’t think I have ever heard of a player in the ACC quiting in the middle of the season. I never have heard of that at UNC. Sure players transfer after the season is over. Not many transfer from a program that is getting as much playing time as him. What an EGO!!

Now that they have to write their own papers over there, it’s a lot more stressful to be an athlete. My guess is he had to concentrate on his basketweaving exam.
