Yahoo! Sports criticizes Elaine Marshall

I have literally no time so I will have to rely on other members of the author team and/or the comments of alert readers for analysis of this piece posted today by Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports.

Here is an excellent quote from the article:

North Carolina’s Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall, claimed the expertise and motivation to prosecute the agents who decimated UNC’s football program. With the information provided to her by journalists alone, she had enough evidence to subpoena her way into open-and-shut convictions of multiple agents under the UAAA.

For a fleeting moment, some of us foolishly believed she actually would.

And yet, here we are, nearly seven months later, and Marshall’s office hasn’t so much as levied a fine against the individuals responsible for UNC’s woes.

Think about that for a moment. The University of North Carolina suspended and dismissed several players, banished some individuals from contact with the program, forced one coach into a resignation, and suffered the indignity of a probing NCAA investigation. More recently, even the NFLPA chose to sanction – albeit lightly – one agent connected with the mess at UNC. Meanwhile, Elaine Marshall’s office has remained silent, cowering behind the safety of a state seal. And outside of her office window, other NFL agents are speeding up and down her collegiate freeways, unchecked and unafraid.

UNC and the NCAA have agreed that improper conduct occurred, but that wasn’t enough for Marshall. Nor were the hotel receipts, wire transfers, or full-page flow charts explicating the cast of characters in media accounts.

I am providing a brief update here to include some material given in the comments.  It has been pointed out that Charles Robinson (also with Yahoo!) is going “mythological” on UNC fans today on his Twitter.  It is very much worth reading.  It seems that there is a whole lot of chatter lately — as if some stuff might be breaking soon.

The only reason she acted tough before was so she could win voted for election to the Senate. Since that failed, she knows the public at large doesn’t care about agent improprities.

Rand Getlin is also President of Synergy Sports and a USC (the real one) grad. You better believe these guys are keeping an eye on what is happening in Holeville. It’s great to see them using a national medium to direct attention back to the UNC-Cheat scandal. Charles Robinson also has some good tweets directed toward a holefan today. It’s coming.

TENN: can you post a link to the Robinson tweets?

TENN, The real UT is in Texas, in case you haven’t figured it out… How’s the Kiffin afterglow??

But, with that being said, nothing’s going to happen with an NC politician unless they get backed up against a wall with a gun to the head. Then, they’ll just poop in their britches and blame someone else.

That is what is wrong with North Carolina politics and the political system. Too many UNC-Cheats graduates. They all want to talk big and be noticed while doing nothing – just like the sorry BOG and ACC Commish!

highstick, I’m a Pack fan not a UT fan. UNC-Cheat fans and UT fans are very similar. I don’t like either, but whatever.

LOL, when you made the comment about the real USC, I wasn’t sure…My blood runs between “red and garnet”, but both are red…Glad you’re not a “Uni Tooth”, meaning “a one tooth Tennessee fan”!!! OKA “Highway Cones”, when they wear those Orange and White tube hats!!

Have you not been paying attention? That will get you thrown in jail now. Have you been listening to Glen Beck!??!?! The speech police are on their way!

Marshall not going to do anything, to do so would potently blow the lid off all the cover up that is going on.

This may be the answer to the question I was about to ask. Why wouldn’t she go after the agents? It seems like that would make Carolina look less culpable, as it would shift attention and blame more heavily on the agents, and less on the players and coaches at Carolina.

Maybe her inaction is evidence that there IS a cover-up going on. Otherwise, why wouldn’t she go after folks in what would be an open-and-shut case against them? Because it would air a lot more dirty laundry over on the Hill, that’s why!

BAM, screw the speech police…and I rarely listen to Beck…but I can assure you that I have no intention of being within a 1000 feet of a politician(of any description) making a speech either…I do my best to avoid all of them anymore…I just vote and “target” at the ballot box!

I hope she goes down with all of the crooks if the truth ever really comes to light.

I’ll say what I’ve said before – I’ve got some first-hand knowledge of this situation and a large amount of whatever is going on at the Secretary of State’s office is sheer ineptitude.
