Debbie Yow interview on Sidney Lowe and other topics

NCSU AD Debbie Yow today was interviewed on 99.9 ESPN Radio by Adam Gold and Joe Ovies. Several topics were discussed, most notably the men’s basketball program and the head coach, Sidney Lowe. She reiterated that she would review Coach Lowe’s job status at the conclusion of the basketball season. You can hear the entire interview here.

In regards to the job status of Coach Lowe, she said the following:

“We’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing,” Yow said. “[We’re] supporting Sidney [Lowe], his staff and our team in every way possible. That’s our focus.”

This is the right thing to say and this is what she does for every coach, every year. No special treatment needed being the coach of a revenue sport.

What I found very interesting was her response to the question of her greatest area of concern is. I completely agree with her answer.

However, Yow’s greatest concern is elevating the entire athletic program. From soccer to football, the goal is to win championships, she said. Considering the university only has four national championships of any kind in the last 100 years, it’s a from-the-ground up task.

“We’re not a factor. We finished No. 87 in the country,” said Yow, referring to the Director’s Cup standings. “You have to have a plan, and we have a plan. It starts with the people. People, resources and opportunity.”

People always look for the most part at the two revenue sports but I am extremely happy she is looking at the big picture. She has a plan to improve the ENTIRE athletic department. The athletic department is in good hands.

bradley is right, Lowe doesn’t have strong donor support. Some major donors shared my desire to oust him after Seasons 3 and 4.

What Lowe had was Lee Fowler. Now he has nothing but his record, which speaks for itself. Dead man walking. No question or doubt in my mind.

Of course Leslie is gone if he’s a projected first rounder. That has always been the deal with him. It makes no difference how well he plays, unless it tanks his projection.

I wish more of the fans who frequent this site would follow Yow’s lead and support the team till the end of the season. No reason to throw Lowe and team under the bus now. There may be 8 months starting in March to do that…

There’s a difference between “support”, “speaking your mind”, and our weak attempts at predicting/projecting the remainder of the season.

Yow did not speak her mind so your interpretation of her level of support is questionable at best. Her comments meant nothing more than no one is going to be fired before the season is over…which pretty much everyone already knew.

    VaWolf,

“Yow did not speak her mind so your interpretation of her level of support is questionable at best.”

I’m not inferring what she says or thinks – as you are while using your mind-reading superpowers when you say “Yow did not speak her mind” . I simply repeated the phrase that was quoted above.

If you look back at the comments on this site after our football team lost to Maryland, you’ll see many comments that were not supportive of the football team. For example:

“I can say with a great deal of certainty that the pain of inept coaching staffs has only begun to pierce our skins this season.”

“He will not ever win the big game.” (really? I thought the 4 UNC victories were pretty big games??? – and how about that Bowl game?)

And even the title of the Maryland follow-up entry “The Symmetry of Loserdom”.

Those aren’t comments that are “supportive” of the coach or team. It’s almost as if many of the entries are written by a bunch of adolescent crybabies who expect to win every game – and have a verbal ‘temper tantrum’ if they don’t.

Now that the season is over – and that it’s clear that the football team totally overachieved, I doubt the writers of those comments still feel that way.

Please keep in mind that many of the comments ARE supportive or merely observational. But, I just hope that none of the players or recruits read the other ones.

Now that I have had time to really think about the job Lowe is doing and his record. The only thing I know is his record is really not as bad as coack K’s was at Duke during his frist 5 years. Boy I bet the Dukes fans sounded just like us wanting to fire his ass, but he sure turned out ok. I think Lowe needs just alittle more time. Lowe will have my backing for one more year after this just to see how the young men do next year. I hope DY looks at it that way and don’t rush to run Sid out so fast. GO PACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just don’t see him developing that much. He desperately needs a sophomore year to be a lottery pick.

    Fellow Wolfpackers,
I have to agree with “rawolf”. I think we should take a step back and breathe. I too have expressed my frustration with both our bb team’s lack of success but I have also expressed my frustration with our lack of patience.
A couple of things I would like to for us to ponder as we wonder.
    1. How long did it actually take coach K to win his first title? 10 yrs. Ten years after he came. Dukes first Nat’l title came in 90-91.

    2. How long did it take for him to get into the NCAA tourney? 4 yrs. NCAA 83-84.

    3. What did his teams look like while he was setting the foundation for
what we now call the dukey-program? Recruiting class ranking? IDK.

We know that they are the premier program now. I’m just saying, it took time.

    4. Do we not see anything positive that SL has brought to us? Top 10 recruiting class.

No disrespect intended here at all, and I know for some of you this is a blasphemous thought but, one last item to ponder is this – would DY at this point be considering pulling the trigger on her sister if her sister were still alive and still coaching here? Last couple of years were not stellar.
History shows 1 Final four year. Sweet 16 was best in other years.
Before you even say it. I absolutely respect and honor her as a person and her contribution to the university and the game itself. I’m just asking the question what do we consider success?
    What is our expectation?
What is the time-table to achieve it?
All of that to simply say that patience is a virtue. I can’t say when we’ve have been patient enough. I only know that we’ll either be patient now or be patient later. But we’re gonna have to wait to win, even if we bring in another coach.
