Bill Cowher: “I’m open to listen to opportunities”

I know some of you are getting a tingly feeling in your leg a la Chris Matthews.

Cowher chatted yesterday with USA Today and is hinting that he may be ready to return to the sidelines. Cowher said, “I’m open to listen to opportunities … I’m very comfortable at CBS. I’ll keep all my options open. And I’ll only answer those questions at the end of the season. I’m not going to comment on any hypothetical situations until the entire season is over.”

So, who knows, I wouldn’t put it past Debbie Yow to pick up the phone, you know, just to say hi.

since there’s an NFL (and NBA) Lockout next season,
Cowher has College or CBS. i’d take the lock: CBS.
imagine the uproar at any State College when the
New Coach’s salary is published. he would not
want to deal with 38 $22K salary media reps
    asking about his $3M+incentives contract.

I don’t know who is more delusional,UNC fans who think they aren’t going to get hit hard by the NCAA or State fans who think that Bill Cowher is chomping at the bit to coach here.

I seriously doubt Cowher wants our job, he’s had 2 opportunities to take it. This sounds like him talking about pro jobs. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have Cowher as our coach, but there is no evidence he wants to coach at NC State.

If Cowher ends up coaching the Panthers, I sure hope it’s the Pitt Panthers and not that sorry excuse for an NFL team down in Charlotte.

Cowher has told those close to him several times that he has zero desire to coach in college. He’s always been in the pro game, as a player and a coach, and enjoys the off-seasons.

BC will be in Charlotte next year, NCSU would not pay him enough to go to a college team, the panthers will give him big money, just my 2 cents.

It would behoove Debbie Yow to pick up the phone and gauge The Chin’s interest.

I agree it isn’t likely at all that he would come to work for us, but it damn sure can’t hurt to ask. I’d rather he be on our sidelines than against us.

“It would behoove Debbie Yow to pick up the phone and gauge The Chin’s interest.”

You’re assuming that she hasn’t. Of course, I think that’s the kind of thing you do very subtly. If word get outs, and it often does, then you’ve pissed off your current coach.

I don’t know about you, but if someone tried to hire someone else to replace me – regardless of whether they ultimately replaced them or not – I’d take the next best offer I could find.

Nothing in the past 10 years of Carolina Panthers football leads me to believe that JerryR will 1)pay for a coaching talent 2)let a coach have any say in personnel decisions. Oh, and that potential top draft pick, don’t expect Jerry to sign anyone for that type of money, unless there is a rookie wage scale, that pick is going to be traded. We are not allowed to trade out of the first round, (some rule about can not trade out of 1st round 2 years in a row) But if Jerry can find some way to get out of paying any fat guaranteed contract. Bill Cowher and Can Newton are not coming to Charlotte, I am sorry to say.

Just a note….has anyone else heard that Marc Trestman is on Miami’s short list?

I agree with several other posters: whether it’s realistic or not, you would be stupid not to at least pick up the phone and see if the guy was interested. Even Super Bowl coaches are subject to ‘well… why not?’ decisions. I would be willing to bet the athletic 007s (ie. The agents that work for ADs to quietly inquire about these sorts of things) have already contacted him.

I don’t think its stupid to go after Cowher. Most folks don’t realize why Cowher left one of the best jobs in the NFL to move to Raleigh. Let’s say it was for “family” reasons (i.e. his better half put her foot down).

With that said, I also don’t find it too strange to think that he would take a college job at his alma matter for 2-3M. Again, if I’m Yow, I call Bill but I also call his other half, who’s input is just as important as Bill’s. Whether this would appeal to him in the past is moot. Circumstances have changed.

I still think its an uphill battle to land him but its not a pipedream. His wife likes Raleigh.

packalum44, I am going to give you the benefit of doubt that you are unaware that Cowher’s wife passed away this summer from cancer. If you did know, then your post was inexcusable.

  13. Packfan28 12/12/2010 at 12:40 PM #

packalum44, you do know his “better half” passed away last year?

  14. Packfan28 12/12/2010 at 12:45 PM #

Sorry, earlier this year. It feels like last year though.

  15. packalum44 12/13/2010 at 12:11 AM #

Completely forgot. Forgive me. Moot point I made then. What most probably don’t know was that his infidelity is what led his wife to give him an ultimatum. Looks like a snowball’s chance in hell that he coaches State or sticks around NC for that matter.
