Bill Cowher: “I’m open to listen to opportunities”

I know some of you are getting a tingly feeling in your leg a la Chris Matthews.

Cowher chatted yesterday with USA Today and is hinting that he may be ready to return to the sidelines. Cowher said, “I’m open to listen to opportunities … I’m very comfortable at CBS. I’ll keep all my options open. And I’ll only answer those questions at the end of the season. I’m not going to comment on any hypothetical situations until the entire season is over.”

So, who knows, I wouldn’t put it past Debbie Yow to pick up the phone, you know, just to say hi.

    Wishful thinking, I’m afraid.

Not going to happen. That guy and his staff are built for the pros

Sigh. True – there is no way he’s coming to the Wolfpack’s sideline. If he would come to Denver, I may even start watching the Broncos. Don’t think they could afford to pay Shan, McDaniels and Cowher though.

Wishful thinking, hire him as DC and get rid of Archer.

Ladies and Gents, your 2011* Carolina Panthers Head Coach.

^ I would be very surprised if Jerry Richardson would pay Cowher type money for a coach.

  7. eas 12/10/2010 at 2:41 PM #

No way in the world Yow would boot TB at this point. Now if we had a terrible season and TB was on the hot seat, then we could get excited. Very good possibility for the Panthers or possibly the Broncs. I just hope he doesn’t like Florida weather. Either the Panthers PAY a dang coach or loose forever.

We are again caught in bad timing with coaches. The curse continues.

^ That’s where I had hoped that this article was heading. But, in the back of my mind, I knew that the implication was that Debbie Yow would get rid of Tom and hire Bill. Please. TOB isn’t going anywhere next year. Especially if TOB and Co. pull off the bowl win. And, Bill Cower is not coming to coach our team. Ever. Ever. Let it go.

Now, he could be right in line to coach the Panthers, starting next year. that is a very real possibility. That would give a NC State Alum one of the most prominent sports jobs in the state. And, we’ve seen Bill around the program since he left Pittsburgh, so there could be a really good relationship between the University and the Panthers organization. Cowher has to be entertaining the idea. The Panthers have to have him in their minds. Good fit. Right time. Right place. Bingo, bango, bongo.

The looming NFL lockout is a factor here, because no GM wants to hire (and pay) a new manager for a season they won’t coach.

DY was good friends with Cowher’s wife, right? Cowher is a full decade younger than TOB, so that’d be one heckuva succession plan for DY to orchestrate.

I hate it that Norv signed an extension last year. Would love to see 2 State guys like PR and BC team up!

Sgt. Slaughter is a much better fit with the Panthers. It’ll be interesting to see if Jerry Richardson holds on to Marty Hurney. Cowher will be a package deal. I don’t see him taking the Panthers job without the personnel control.

Wait, why are we talking about replacing Herb…I mean TOB? Are we hating TOB this week?

Yes, I believe that it is a BIG pipedream. But there is always DC/Exec Asst HC/HC-in-Waiting.

  13. ryebread 12/10/2010 at 3:39 PM #

I think that’s a complete pipe dream. My guess is that TOB is going to be here as long as he wants.

There’s no way that we’d want to pay a buy out for a coach that just had his first winning record — particularly one that we’re getting on the low end of the pay scale. There’s no way that DY will run off a coach who just had his first winning record. It just doesn’t make sense financially or politically.

Any chance he’d consider coaching the Holes?

I think I’d slit my wrists.

Bill Cowher is the only coach I’d be open to trading TOB for. If we’d had the bad season this year that everyone expected, we’d all be on our knees praying for Cowher. I’m still not convinced that TOB is getting it done on the recruiting trail. We surely have some good momentum, though. Imagine if we brought in Cowher right now. Instant credibility, and good chance of State quickly reaching another level. And what better time to do that than when Carolinx is facing the abyss of NCAA sanctions??? This might be the golden opportunity we’ve been waiting for to put some serious distance between us and the Holes.

The ideal situation would be TOB getting an offer from Notre Dame, which many believe would be the only way he’d leave State, and then we’d be free to pursue Cowher without any hard feelings from anyone.

The WORST situation is we keep TOB, and we sink back to 5-wins a year for another year or two, end up firing him, meanwhile we see Cowher bringing the Holes back from the abyss.

Again, I think I’d slit my wrists.

Is there a reason why this page has 5 ads on it that are all the same? When it plays that stupid one with the chick talking it goes crazy and I can’t mute them all.

  16. JEOH2 12/10/2010 at 4:51 PM #

This discussion seems a little crazy…I thought it would center around what NFL team Cowher would want to go to, w/ a focus on the Panthers…but Cowher to NC State as a Head Coach now or anytime is not real, its a fantasy…I mean…why!?

btw, Is there a main topic in the works in relation to NC State having our first All-American since Mario Williams?

  17. MrW00Fpack 12/10/2010 at 4:55 PM #

As much as id love to have Cowher do we not all see whats happening with our other alum coach? granted cowher comes with a lot better track record and he is proven like a blue field but i still just dont know, but i would def entertain the idea.

  18. Packfan28 12/10/2010 at 5:08 PM #

An NFL coach basically just has to get a team ready to play their next game. He doesn’t have to recruit, he doesn’t have to deal with parents, and he doesn’t have to worry about NCAA rules. For all this, he usually gets paid significantly more than a college coach. Why would Cowher want to be a college coach?

  19. bradleyb123 12/10/2010 at 5:26 PM #

Cowher said when he stepped down from Pittsburgh that he would coach again if the right job came along. He said he’d even coach a high school team (hard to imagine that!)

A good coach would enjoy the challenge. I imagine if money was no longer a concern for a rich guy like Cowher, that the money he would make from State would be plenty for him. If he wanted the challenge of building his alma mater into a powerhouse, that is.

  20. TheAliasTroll 12/10/2010 at 6:28 PM #

    Couple things…

Notre Dame does NOT want TOB, and they most certainly aren’t letting go of Brian Kelly after one year to hire TOB.

Also, insinuating a Bill Cowher college team might be similar in any way to Sidney Lowe’s performance is nutty balls bat sh!t crazy. But so is thinking we have 0.01% chance of getting Cowher next year.

  21. howlie 12/10/2010 at 6:30 PM #

    Silly bam.

It’ll be coaching Cam Newton–the Rothlisberger duplicate, and program-building at the Panthers.
I wouldn’t doubt the deal makes him co-owner [coach-to-own, salary deffered to ownership %] to succeed Jerry Richardson, since Jerry publicly dissed his own sons.

  22. wolfonthehill 12/10/2010 at 6:31 PM #

    I’m still hoping Chargers myself…

  23. bradleyb123 12/10/2010 at 7:15 PM #

I’d prefer it be the Panthers. But I’d take the Chargers.

As long as it happens BEFORE Butch is unemployed.

  24. Wulfpack 12/10/2010 at 8:04 PM #

I think there is a very real possibility he will interview with the Panthers. Whether or not Jerry wants to pay him that kind of cash is another story.

He’s not coming to NCSU, in any capacity. This guy is an NFL head coach.

NFL head coaches live a nightmare during the season. They sleep on office couches. Coaching the college game is much more “fun”. THere are many different aspects to running a college program. In the NFL, you watch film, sit in meetings all day drawing up gameplans, and might do a little coaching in practice 4 days a week.

Does anyone really think Cowher would coach UNC?

I don’t care if we had went undefeated this year, I’d trade TOB for Cowher in a second. As far as recruiting is concerned I think the name alone would pull in top talent and the man knows football so he could coach at any level.

I believe we could become a powerhouse under him.
