State 44, BC 17

Big win and an impressive response after the letdown last week. State is now 5-1 (2-1) and still controls its own destiny in the division.

Unlike last week, State took advantage of an early 10-0 lead and never let up, executing a solid gameplan that exploited BC’s focus on the run and they played a complete game on both sides of the ball and also on special teams. The Wolfpack racked up 422 yards in total offense, mainly through the air (347 yards). Russell Wilson completed 38-of-51 passes for 328 yards and three TDs (nevermind the two forced passes for interceptions), one each to Owen Spencer, Jarvis Williams, and Darrell Davis. Dontae Johnson blocked a punt and D.J. Green recovered for a touchdown on BC’s opening drive, and C.J. Wilson returned an interception 28 yards for a TD.

This was a well-coached and well-executed game.

It’s nice to be able to have a so-so game and still annihilate a non-Duke conference foe.

My new prediction (for the ultimate kick in the nuts) would be to beat FSU and Clemson, but lose the Atlantic with a loss in Chapel Hill. I would totally lose my mind if that happened. So it probably will.

After tonight’s action, I’m starting to think maybe Clemson and Miami are both terrible.

Based on what I’ve heard, it was so-so. Couldn’t watch today, sadly.

foose~ It was “luverly” to be in Columbia tonight to watch the Cocks manhandle Bama..Jeez, if they could have only beaten Auburn~~

I took my Army roomy and his wife tonight..She was blown away with that many people in a football stadium, but her past experience has been the Harvard-Yale games…By the end of the game, she was wanting one of those t shirts that had “Cocks” on it~~~

What the heck happened to Clemmons? All I’ve seen so far was the score…

Bama fans are good folks though…Even when they lose!!

Nice to get a big win in the league and still have room for improvement. Let’s go beat EC like we should. Focus. Then we’ll have some time off to prepare for an excellent FSU team. C-F will be a carnival atmosphere that night. Go Pack!

I agree we need to focus on ECU & take care of business.

But…while watching the FSU/Miami game I have come to one conclusion. If we don’t tackle FSU, we will lose….End of Discussion!!!

‘stick-based on what I’ve see of Clem’s son, they are a decent running team that BADLY wants to be a passing team, to their own detriment at times. And they are Amato-esque with untimely penalties and turnovers.

UNC got back their starting safeties and had a solid defensive gameplan, namely 9 guys around the line of scrimmage and man coverage a lot of the time. The kitties best WRs are 18 year olds (kind of like our RBs without the production) and Dabo & co played into the hands of the Holes by forcing it with Parker. UNCheat also made the plays they needed to on offense.

Neither team is scary to me assuming the Pack shows up for those two games. And unless Clemson dramstically (sic) improves, your boys will have a lot of fun with them at season’s end. Clemson is Bama-lite, just without solid coaching. And Julio Jones. And Ingram. And Richardson.

Things I liked while I watched the game from my couch –

    – grabbing the lead early
    – in general solid defensive play (no not perfect and things to work on)
    – RW seemed to be more in the flow than a week ago
    – taking what BC’s D gave
    – better special teams play – punting and the punt block especially
    – seeing Glennon get some snaps

Things I did not like –

    – a seeming loss of focus at times
    – a couple cases where it appeared that the receivers gave up on the play resulting in ints (granted my view was only through the TV producers eyes and often that doesn’t tell the whole story)

In general I thought the team played well but maybe not the A game.

    Once more “survive and advance”

Good to see Washington get some snaps and a kick return too. He is shifty and I think would be a good move to WR, we need a receiver who can break down defenders and break away, its the only weapon we don’t seem to have and would have come in handy last week. Especially on a D that wants everything underneath like the last two weeks. Though D Davis was great today in space.

Manning played great as well, a lot of no stat plays like Cole, but stil vital to the effort.

The D-line was lot more solid holding their gaps. Nothing spectacular, but fundamentally no breakdowns caught my eye. They were getting hands up to break up three step stuff as well, a key component to support the blitz game.

Amerson was very solid, I think staff hit the jackpot with his commitment, He is always around the ball in the line as well on the edges, and he isn’t afraid to take on blocks. I’m more impressed by him every week. He doesn’t seem to ever whiff on tackles like some of the other DBs.

Byars when he was out there competed well. It’s good to see our young secondary competing, with each other as well as the opponent.

Both the freshman safeties made some plays as well, and Wolff is getting better every game, I love his spirit and he and Bishop are both getting nastier every game, what every safety needs is a mean streak. Bishop should have had three picks BTW, he stumbled on a tipped ball in the red zone that would have prevented a score. And if he hadn’t cramped up he probably would have scored his second pick, too.

I think CJ Wilson has jumped out on tape to opposing coaches, none of our opponents have targeted him and he comes up big when they do, the pick six looked like a diagrammed play.

Granted there wasn’t a lot of threat out there from BC today, but still encouraging. What a difference a year makes. A 59 point swing from last year’s fiasco in Chastnut Hill.

The game was almost boring, it seemed never in doubt. Which is what made it awesome. Haven’t felt that way about the Pack against a 1A opponent since PR’s last game against Kansas. What a beautiful day in C-F.

Slightly above average effort resulting in a great win. I call it a great win because of the fact that it WAS only a slightly above average effort. In years past they would have barely won today, if at all. They got the opponent down early and despite not clicking on all cylinders they still took what BC gave them and did not let up after opening up a lead. A very nice win.

And as crazy as it sounds, my favorite stats from today are time of possession (35:56 to 24:14) and only 2 penalties for 12 yards.

And I bet Shinskie is going to be one hurting puppy in the morning. Man did the defense punish that guy.

I enjoy the ECU series. Much more interesting than playing UCF or Southern Miss and it is an easy road trip. In college football, Ws are all that matters and one next week should get us back in the top 25.

I am disappointed in some of you. The whole “they are not our rival” sounds like those UNC fans who look down their noses at everyone else. As TOB says, if they have Carolina in their name, they are our rivals.

  12. coach13 10/10/2010 at 9:24 AM #

    My thoughts…
1-The punter did excellent. The kicker did not hurt us today either though I do not like to high kick to the upback that gave them their best return of the day.
2-Remember BC held VT to 1 TD and 4 FG’s. Their offense tinks but their D is not that bad.
    3-Good job gamecocks.
4-It was to our advantage but I still hate Carolina beating Clemson.
5-FSU vs Miami was a scheduled shoot out, but one team was loaded with blanks. Harris sucks. Check previous posts, I have stuck with that theory all season. We will have to score and keep up with FSU.
6-I would like to see the travel outside privelage revoked at least for the FSU game. Wow that stadium was over half empty starting the second half.
7-Glennon should have gotten in at 41-17. Period. That’s 5 scores ahead in the 4th.
8-Lets demolish ECU and take a nice long 12 days to prepare for FSU.

Ed Hardin had a good column in the Greensboro N&R today. New developments inUNX situation. Sounds ominous for UNX program.

    My thoughts:

General: Even without its A game, the Pack got a win. I agree with TOB that the team looked “heavy-legged.” But I do see overall improvement every week. Hopefully the improvement will continue significantly as it’s not going to get any easier for the last six games.

Special Teams: This area has generally improved the most thus far as the season has progressed. Consistent return blocking is now the area most needing improvement. Greene and Johnson and the Gentry brothers seem to be giving a nasty flavor to the coverage units. Glad that Leffler is punting – he’s made two good showings now. It would be good to have more (most) kickoffs into the end zone.

Offense: While it is an explosive unit, the weak link is the running game which is improving. Contribute that mostly to a young (improving) OL. I was dissappointed that we couldn’t run better against BC although much credit has to be given to their very strong running D. But, still, it is not good to have to have a one-deminsional game plan against anybody. I, too, would have liked to have seen Glennon play most of the fourth quarter.

Defense: The weak link is still the defensive backfield. Their pass D has improved vastly. But they’re still not tackling well. Against the BC outside running game, the DL and LBs took out the interference as they should. But DBs are missing tackles still. Hopefully that will improve as they gain more experience. And I must strongly agree with the comment above: “But…while watching the FSU/Miami game I have come to one conclusion. If we don’t tackle FSU, we will lose….End of Discussion!!!”

I was at the World Beer Festival over in Durham yesterday and missed it. It sounds like the Pack played very well at times and weren’t so sharp at others. But…it was a no worries win against a team that has pretty much owned us forever. No matter what they did there was no stopping the Pack. That’s all that really matters at the end of the day.

I doubt most here will say the satisfaction of today’s win over a conference opponent will equal the satisfaction of a victory over ECU next week.

You’re right. This win is so much BETTER than a win over ECU would be. Don’t get me wrong. We need to beat ECU. But beating BC, a team I despise after the way they threw a TD pass on 4th down last year, already leading 45-20. This win keeps us in a position to get to the ACCCG. The ECU game does nothing for us except (if we win) continue our confidence. Playing ECU on the road just sets us up for a big fall. We have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing them. And it’s in Greenville. And they hate us. They get fired up for us. I don’t know if we get fired up for them. It’s not a rivalry game like the one against UNX. Of course they’re just down the road, so in that sense it’s a rivalry game. And we hate to lose to them. We’d hate to lose to App State, too. It’s just not the rivalry some people want to say it is. If we lose, it will be disgusting. If we win, we’ll just be glad to have taken care of business. I won’t be bragging to anyone about it. I’ll just be glad to be 6-1. Hopefully we get there.

Nice “W” yesterday. As I told friends at the tailgate at halftime – when was the last time we were beating an ACC opponent by 17 at the half and had room for improvement??

I don’t think we showed a lot of blitzing yesterday – we were likely saving that up for ECU (whose offense will be tough for us to stop) and FSU.

The ECU game is huge because we can really set a great tone for our bye week – and create another great atmoshphere for the Thursday ESPN game.

FSU looks like the team to beat in the conference right now. They look much better than they have the last few years.

  18. Packfan28 10/10/2010 at 11:49 AM #

I’m ususally one of the more optimistic people when it comes to our football team this year, but I’m not nearly as optimistic after yesterday’s game. We were very lucky to be playing a horrible, horrible QB. He had guys open all day and missed them long, missed them short, and missed them wide. I watched FSU last night and if it had of been them we played, we would have lost easily. Thankfully we have a cupcake next week and then a bye week to get ready for FSU, but our defense is going to have to get a lot better.

Obviously I’m happy about the win, and 8 wins now seems like a sure thing, but I just didn’t come away as optimistics as before.

“Even without its A game, the Pack got a win. ”

    Maybe
    Maybe not

This might just be the way this team plays.

The fun is back at BC!

    … Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  21. Daily Update 10/10/2010 at 1:44 PM #

I am surprised to see people downplaying our level of play yesterday. I thought we played very well overall.

  22. Ismael 10/10/2010 at 1:52 PM #

Great win yesterday, i think there’s way too much negativity on here for what we did to BC.

For those who don’t understand why we couldn’t run against BC, ask VT. This is why i love our coaches. They analyze the opponent and adjust the game plan. I don’t care if we played a game and never ran the ball. If BC is going to consistently leave 7-8 guys in the box, you have to pass it out in the flats. Did anyone see RW hit Graham on that slant route to convert a 3rd down? bullet pass right between two LBs and the CB.

Im still not sold on FSU because Miami has been exposed. Their Pitt win doesn’t look all that hot now that they just lost this past week as well. Plus i think FSU got up for UM, naturally which changes things. Miami, top to bottom, probably has the best talent but JHarris is awful.

But let’s not look past ECU. I still see a huge win and our D holding them by getting blitz pressure. I see more special teams and possibly defensive TD’s.

  23. inhoc... 10/10/2010 at 2:34 PM #

FYI: Fl State has a bye week for us as well….

  24. mak4dpak 10/10/2010 at 5:50 PM #

After the last 2 years, it is hard to believe, but a win against ECU this weekend will make us bowl eligible. But let’s continue to take it one game at a time, and who knows where we could be playing for the holidays. The sky is the limit.

  25. bradleyb123 10/10/2010 at 6:11 PM #

I thought we did a good job of showing NOTHING yesterday. I mean, nothing as in nothing on game film for opponents to analyze. We didn’t have to show anything to beat the pants off a lousy BC team. We didn’t have to blitz. We didn’t have to throw long passes. We just chewed up the clock. And showed nothing.

And it was a thing of beauty!
