Kiper fallout related to the UNC scandals and increasing national scrutiny of Butch (Day 91)

I don’t have a lot of time tonight, but I am going to pass along a few things.

First, some quick “dot connecting” that grew out of the big Sports Illustrated piece that hit yesterday.

One interesting passage from that article dealt with “NFL draft guru” Mel Kiper.  He is the annoying guy with the “Lego man” hair on ESPN every April during draft coverage.  Apparantly he is close to Gary Wichard.  This quote from the article calls into question his impartiality in his rating of Wichard clients.

Gary also used his contacts in the media to help him recruit. In 2000, before a meeting with Stanford defensive lineman Willie Howard, Gary arranged for ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper to call. Gary and I were talking to Willie in Gary’s office when Gary’s phone rang, and he put it on speakerphone.

“Viper, how are you?” Gary said. That’s what he called Mel, Viper or Vipe. “Viper, I’m sitting here with the best defensive lineman in college football. Do you know who that is?”

“You must be with Willie Howard,” Mel said.

Gary used Mel like that all the time. In the agent business, people know Gary and Mel are close, and some people suspect that Mel ranks players more favorably if they are Gary’s clients.

(Emphasis added)  Interesting.  More interesting when you consider the following quote as presented in this graphic I noticed on the Pack Pride boards:

I wonder if more quotes like this will now surface connecting Wichard to Blake to Kiper to UNC players.

Speaking of Blake, his profile is still up on this UNC site, which is pretty strange.

I also want to point out two national articles that are worth reading. Kalani Simpson of Fox Sports points out that UNC blaming the players is a cop-out, while ESPN’s Bomani Jones does not buy Butch’s defense.  I don’t have time to highlight the good quotes — but both pieces are worth your time.

Don’t know much about Bomani Jones….but this piece has the IC boys really fired up. They are also, purportedly, trying to arrange for flyovers with banners “we love you coach Davis”. Don’t know if they are planning this for the UVa game or the next home game.

    Anyway, here is the link.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/commentary/news/story?id=5681159

Bob Lee of BobLeeSays.com has a current column where he is going to email Chancellor Thorp suggestions (reasonable ones without profanity) on HOW to handle this mess. Thorp is a friend and Lee says that they differ on HOW to handle it. Pretty good read.

Most interesting is that the WUFFIE posters tend to use the word….Independent Investigation. I guess that we learned this from the Jimmy V era. However, MHO, there is absolutely NO credibility from the UNC folks as to whether there has also been “booster involvement”. I have NO facts and not even any good rumors….however, it COULD follow that stonewalling the “situation” as they have been is the best defense they have….

But, I think that only an outsider could actually ask the questions that need to be asked.

If you guys have a plan….”what would YOU do if you were Ch. Thorp (there is NO e on the end)?”, then chime in.

It will be interesting to see what else is “announced” prior to Saturday’s game.

Lego Man, LMAO. Thanks for that.

The Kiper link is a non starter. The NFL doesn’t rate or draft players based on what Mel Kiper says, just as they do not game plan based on the comments of sports writers and talk show hosts.

  4. wufpup76 10/14/2010 at 12:25 AM #

Both the Bomani article and the Fox Sports article are well worth the read.

I particularly enjoyed the Fox article that really skewered Chief and Baddour. And well, the Bomani did too – but it seemed his main argument was to pay players – which is a debate for another time.

Glad to see you running with this story Old MacDonald! Here’s something else to add to your “Kiper File” to help connect the dots:

Why Was Kiper Only Guy On Balmer Bandwagon?
    http://sportsbybrooks.com/why-was-kiper-only-guy-on-balmer-bandwagon-29120

“Current Seahawks defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer is a former first round pick (29th overall) taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2008 NFL Draft. During his first two seasons with the Niners, Balmer not only didn’t record a single sack, but failed to start a game.”

    ….and….

“If you pore over Kiper’s mock drafts leading up to the NFL Draft in 2008, he ranked Balmer’s draft status well above where Balmer was projected by many other distinguished draft experts – including Mike Mayock of NFL Network, Todd McShay of ESPN and Scouts, Inc., Rick Gosselin of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS and Don Banks of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.

Before the 2008 Senior Bowl and NFL combine, in his Jan. 22, 2008, mock draft, Kiper projected Balmer as a tenth overall selection going to the New Orleans Saints. On Feb. 20, the first day of the 2008 combine, Balmer was Kiper’s 12th selection in his first round projections.

To show the disparity between Kiper and other experts, in his first NFL mock draft on Jan. 22, 2008, Don Banks of SI didn’t project Balmer to be selected in the first round.

With his last projection, Banks later moved Balmer into the first round with the 25th pick, but Mayock in his final 2008 NFL mock draft didn’t include Balmer in the first round. Gosselin projected Balmer as the 29th overall pick (he nailed it) and McShay settled on the 24th slot.

Kiper eventually dropped Balmer in his final 2008 NFL mock draft to 24th overall.”

    Let’s see…connecting more dots: Wichard -> Kiper -> Blake -> Balmer -> Austin -> other UNC players/Bama’s Dareus/UGA’s Green/USC-E’s Saunders….etc., etc., etc.

tjfoose1 – JMHO, but the Mel Kiper link is just another piece of the whole corrupt mess from college recruiting to the NFL draft, but it’s definitely not a non-starter.

Luchs never stated Kiper was paid anything for his efforts on behalf of Gary Wichard. But, Wichard used Kiper, a well-known NFL draft analyst, to add credibility to his attempts to sign players, while Kiper used Wichard and other NFL agents to build his stature as an NFL draft analyst. They both gained monetarily…Wichard once he signed a player, and Kiper with his contracts to appear on television as a draft analyst. As the old saying goes, one hand washes the other.

  7. Wufpacker 10/14/2010 at 7:13 AM #

Have to agree. Kiper may not have any conflict of interest here technically speaking, but it does make him look a bit slimy OR a bit naive. Slimy if he did it for payment, naive if he didn’t (ie if Wichard used their friendship).

And if you believe his claim (after the article hit) that he and Wichard hadn’t arranged the calls ahead of time, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

  8. IamGumbyDammit 10/14/2010 at 7:16 AM #

I have spent years helping companies with their internal control structures over business processes, and I can tell you that Kalani Simpson NAILED it with the reference to “Attitude reflects leadership.” It is referred to as “the tone at the top” in my line of work. Why did TOB say he had no plans to institute a sign-out sheet policy? Because he knows damn well that the “kids” know damn well what Coach TOB would do if they screw up. There is no question that the right tone at the top is there at NCSU. The tone at the top over at Chapped Hell is simply painful to hear, because BMFD and AD Backdoor are tone deaf.

  9. PackHooligan 10/14/2010 at 8:10 AM #

I could see Wichard using his friendship with Mel as some kind of clout builder with potential clients. I do not see Kiper over ranking players just because they are Wichard’s clients. Misranking players would only hurt Kiper in the long run, since ranking players is his sole job duty.

Kiper was on with Mike and Mark this morning. He said that he has had a long standing relationship with both Wichard and Blake, and that he considers them “family.” He also claimed ignorance of the whole Wichard-Blake situation.

  10. TAEdisonHokie 10/14/2010 at 8:44 AM #

PackHooligan – Kiper has a long standing relationship with Wichard and Blake and considers them to be “family”, but claims he doesn’t know about their current situation?? Really?? Why does that sound so much like Butch Davis claiming he didn’t know some of his players were involved in improper relationships with agents while others were having their academic work done by a tutor he hired?

Sorry, but Kiper is just flat-out lying about what he knows, and how he evaluates players (see commentary on Balmer above). Anybody with even a slight interest in college football knows something about the UNC fiasco. As you noted above, Kiper has MUCH more than a “slight interest” because he makes a pretty darn good living selling his evaluations of football players. Kiper definitely sees the way Luchs tied him to Wichard as a real threat to his credibility. He will do and say anything to protect his way of life.

  11. Ismael 10/14/2010 at 9:04 AM #

notice how Kiper appeared on all ESPN-related radio shows and basically got free-reign to defend himself. Then of course most ESPN talking-heads totally vouched for “Viper” and “couldn’t possibly imagine how that implies anything under-handed about Kiper.”

Kiper is officially tainted now. His picks are going to be scrutinized for years to come and his past picks will be as well.

I’ll be honest, when i first heard that Balmer was a “first rounder” having watched UNC play, i honestly couldn’t believe it but thought: “maybe these draft douches know something i don’t.”

    guess not 😀

I used “lego hair man” yesterday but feel free to use it since I did not copyright it.

This guy is dirty and he knows it. As I stated yesterday, 20-25 years ago, when he was trying to make it and paying his dues, a few extra $$$ under the table would have made a nice difference to him.

  13. LKNpackfan 10/14/2010 at 9:23 AM #

Love the new Tar Heel logo. Might have to send that out to some unc friends

  14. PackHooligan 10/14/2010 at 9:31 AM #

^TAE, I agree that Kiper most likely knows way more than he is letting on. In the interview he said, “I don’t know” so many times it was almost like he was trying to make himself believe it. It seems that the people interviewing him spend more effort trying to discredit Luchs than asking Kiper meaningful questions. Of course, I never expect meaningful questions out of Mike and Mark. The first thing people should ask Kiper after he admits that Wichard and Blake are so close to him, is about the payments between the two.

It all boils down to this man Mark Emmert NCAA President. He will have the ultimate say on whether UNC will get the death penalty. 2 years probation, no post season play and loss of 30 plus scholarships. You can yip and yipe but he is the man. He begins his tenure Nov 1, 2010.

    http://www.ncaa.org/president

    from his statement I quote:

“The NCAA exists to promote a high-quality, high-integrity experience for all of our student-athletes. The thread that ties us all together is why we’re here in the first place, which is to create educational and athletics experiences for young people that will serve them well beyond their playing days.”

I think it is time the alum and the students take out the part of the fight song “Go to Hell Carolina”, It appears they already there!

  17. Gowolves 10/14/2010 at 10:28 AM #

I think a story about boosters being involved is about to break. WRAL blog states that news is coming. We will see. Seems like it could be from a reliable source.

  18. highstick 10/14/2010 at 11:12 AM #

Yea, the “brown heel” looks like something Mr. Hankie would give you versus a “black tar heel”!!

  19. LifeLongWolf 10/14/2010 at 11:37 AM #

Mel Kiper has never been that good at predicting success in the NFL. He may be good at predicting draft status, but draft status is not a good predictor of NFL success. There are many high round picks who never play a down, and many undrafted free agents who go on to be stars. No, I don’t have charts and graphs, but I don’t think Kiper or any of the other talking heads have a clue. They talk alot, but in the end, it’s damn near blind luck as to who turns into a great NFL player. Read Gregg Easterbrook for more details.

What Wichard and Kiper were doing was just a variation of name dropping. As others have said, it may not be illegal or even unethical, but they each got a benefit out of it.

I thought Kiper was boring and overhyped before this. After listening to him on the radio, I now think he’s creepy, slimy, boring, and overhyped.

  20. WolftownVA81 10/14/2010 at 11:50 AM #

Kiper does indeed sound like part of the “Family”. Drag out the Rico act. They are all co-conspirators working to influence potential clients decisions. Maybe he can also be tagged as an agent by several States.

  21. wufpup76 10/14/2010 at 12:41 PM #

^That would be unbelievable if RICO got used for things associated with college athletics.

The sad thing is you really could use it … what a shame.

  22. erichack 10/14/2010 at 2:59 PM #

you guys are making some great points…with kiper, it may have more to do with ‘making the sale’ on a particular player instead of truely evaluating his actual ability to make it big in the NFL…if he can talk up a player enough he ‘may’ impact the player position in the draft thereby improving the deal for wichard…

its very similar to how the music business works…record people get a song out and touch base with an inside connection to all of the radio stations to get them to play that song over any number of other new songs that do not have the same representation…that song gets on the play list at enough stations then if is has any quality at all it begins to make a move on the charts thereby creating demand from the consumer…

    sometimes perception is everything…

  23. bTHEredterror 10/14/2010 at 7:50 PM #

Great point, erichack. That’s part of the reason why a lot of the bestselling music is garbage. They focus much more on marketing and promotion and very little on their music itself.

And not to steal your thunder, but that is the concern with Kiper for me. If Wichard and Blake are family, then hyping UNC players during draft time may be a familky favor. It may not impact draft status, but it can have a definite impact on recruiting. Young impressionable players hear Kiper touting Blake as the best D-Line coach on any level, and see one of his players being penciled in as a 1st Rounder, and that creates an impression.

  24. highstick 10/14/2010 at 9:44 PM #

RICO’s been stuck in the back of my mind for several weesk, but I don’t know enough about it to speak intelligently..
