Per UNC: Burney, Brown, Little, Austin, M McAdoo and Quinn all out(total of 15 being held out)

The UNC Football Bus

We have to give credit to a poster on Pack Pride for this particular image. It should be a wild morning.

Listen to Taylor Zarzour interviewing IC’s Greg Barnes who is live in Chapel Hill.

Mark Armstrong just tweeted:

Press release from UNC:

Chapel Hill – The University of North Carolina has declared six student-athletes on the football team ineligible for Saturday’s season-opening game for violating school and/or NCAA rules. The University is also withholding at least six other student-athletes from Saturday’s game while the investigation continues.

The six ineligible student-athletes include: defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.

Six other student-athletes who will be withheld from Saturday’s game include: tailback Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, tailback Ryan Houston, safety Da’Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.

The number of games that those 12 student-athletes may miss has not been determined at this time. The investigation continues to include both agent-related and academic issues.

The University also continues to work today with the NCAA to determine the eligibility status of three other student-athletes. Those three will not accompany the team to Atlanta on Friday morning. Further information will be announced when a decision on their status for the game is reached.

“We’re obviously very disappointed to learn that the actions of a number of our student-athletes have resulted in their being unable to compete in Saturday’s game,” says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “It is important to note again that people should not make assumptions as to the nature of each student-athlete’s involvement with these issues.

“We are still working with the NCAA staff to resolve these eligibility issues. The NCAA is focusing on each of their situations on a case-by-case basis. Together we are working to determine their status in as thorough and fair a process as is possible.

“I know our fans share my disappointment, but I hope they will show their strong support for the student-athletes on the football team who will represent our University on Saturday. I am proud of the way they have worked so hard to prepare for this season despite numerous distractions. They have my full support.”

“Moving forward, Dick Baddour, Butch Davis and I are determined to use this as an opportunity to look hard at our programs, resources and people to ensure that everyone associated with the football program upholds the values that are central to Carolina’s culture, most especially our academic values,” says Chancellor Holden Thorp.

“As I’ve have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University,” says head football coach Butch Davis. “We are disappointed the players’ choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina. Our coaches and players have a tremendous challenge this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be excited to face LSU.”

According to IC’s Greg Barnes, Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant and Deunta Williams did not board the bus. Barnes and Zarzour is also speculating that Johnny White did not board the bus either which would mean UNC’s top 3 running backs are not on the way to Atlanta.

Given they are running out of RBs, maybe Butch will play QBs Yates and Renner at the same time.

They can play hot potato with the ball …

The State fan on the radio right now is hilarious. I have to do a few hours of driving later today…it should be very entertaining.

Love the State fan that called in to say he’s a proud ABC’er. For the record, I’d pull for Al Qaeda and the Taliban against UNC.

September 3 should be declared a national holiday for sports talk radio in the triangle. Hilarious calls from ABCers and ridiculous calls from Tarholes. What’s the line on when the first “Wait ’til basketball season” comes in?

Something doesn’t add up for me.

“The six ineligible student-athletes include: defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.

Six other student-athletes who will be withheld from Saturday’s game include: tailback Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, tailback Ryan Houston, safety Da’Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.”

    That’s 12. The other 3:

    LB Quan Sturdivant
    LB Bruce Carter
    DB Deunta Williams

We know Austin/Little are part of agentgate. The rest should be from nannygate. Yet of the ineligible only 2 are known part of agentgate, 4 from nannygate? The “witheld but not ineligible” would be suspected of cheating but less likely?

This 3 groups of non-playing athletes is highly irregular….I’m confused. Somebody make a list and put what each person is suspected of doing to keep them out of the game, and try to make sense of the 3 groups they have given.

So much for the “rolling suspensions”, eh? I’m just so glad that UNC was not able to wriggle their way out of this in time for the LSU game. Not that I’m enjoying watching Chapel Hill burn…no…not at all…but seriously, there is nothing more frustrating than watching someone act like they’re above the law for years, get caught, and then be allowed to go about business as usual. I find the repeated arrogance from UNC and their athletic department to be appalling.

According to the OFFICAL (I copied it from the Carolina FB site) Depth Chart published on 8/19/10, 15, I REPEAT, 15 of the players were on that chart. Euwell (DE) was NOT on the chart. WRAL originally had 12, then the N&O upped the total.

    This will really be interesting….

    ALL THREE Tailbacks – GONE

BOTH (Two) Right Defensive Ends – GONE

BOTH (Two) Strong Safeties – GONE

ALL THREE Kickoff Returners – GONE

BOTH (Two) Punt Returners – GONE

Since the Depth Chart lists the players at multiple positions, you have to go over it a few times to pick up the repeats….

Wonder if, and when, our illustrious ACC commissioner will make a statement about this embarassment to the conference? Don’t hold your breath.

Just a word of caution on this, guys. I went to the South Carolina game last night and before game was at a tailgate. On Wednesday night, 19 players, including 11 starters were not allowed to stay with the team because they had not been cleared by the NCAA. When I left the tailgate at 6:30, that was still the report. BTW, the mother of one of the 3 who was not later cleared was at the tailgate and stayed on the phone most of the time with her son.. She jumped in her car around 6:15 with her other son and we don’t know where she went. Maybe to pick him up or over to the football office across the street. She was not happy. The girlfriend of one of the other 3 was there also and she was not a happy camper either.

Saunders was the other of the 3 and he’s toast, although not officially announced.. May be part NCAA, but he’s in Spurrier’s doghouse and not likely to ever play again.

I don’t want to mention the other player’s names, but here’s a shocker for you. A couple of days ago, the NCAA picked up on another issue and probably is the reason one player was never cleared last night. His mom had bought an insurance policy online this year(he’s a senior and NFL prospect). Little did she know that the company she bought the policy from has an affiliation with an agent. That’ probably the thing that kinked him up last night cause he was a lesser character in Hotelgate. The NCAA just didn’t have time to get this one cleared one way or the other so he was held out so as not to create a problem.

Spurrier said on the post game radio show that the players weren’t cleared until 6 o’clock or so so they didn’t know who was going on the field right up until game time! If you saw how they played the first series, it was obvious that they were a little out of sync.

Now, based on that, it’ll be interesting tomorrow night how this will work with UNC. If they wait until game time and some are cleared, they couldn’t have gone on the plane with the team to Atlanta. Think about the logistics of this! At least South Carolina was playing at home so that eliminated that situation.

It will be interesting to see this. Haven’t had time to read most of this cause it was a late night and I stayed in the sack a little longer this AM.

I just read one of the above threads and they went by bus?? Hmm, I guess the suspended players could buy a bus ticket on there own and go to Atlanta on their own and be readily available.

But keep in mind, the allegations at UNC, are much more serious than at South Carolina, except for Saunders. I’d heard a week ago that everyone had cleared their bills at the hotel, except for Weslye, so that sorta conflicted with a later report I had that there were some other suspensions for 1 or 2 games. If all but 3 were cleared before last night, and I suspect another would have been except for the “last minute” situation I mentioned above, that would mean they’ve got most of their problems resolved..or at least it would appear to be that way right now.

Agentgate and Nannygate are much more serious issues!

someone made an interesting point, their defense now reflects our defense of last year with lack of depth and inexperience. Lets see how that works out.

also, I wonder if LSU has had trouble scheming for them this week.

and its going to be awful if UNC somehow wins. We’ll never hear the end of it.

    BOOM! Here comes the boom…

It’s funny that yesterday UNC fans were attacking Joe Schad. One comment was: “When has he been right about anything…”

Well – when it comes to UNC’s investigation he as been pretty much dead on target with his info. LOL!

  22. baxter 09/03/2010 at 12:16 PM #

Just saw on ESPN musberger giving his thoughts on the UNC mess, and John Buchigros (whatever his name is, he looks like a clown) goes, “such a shame for those players at Carolina” … why won’t one guy on TV jus come out and say, you cheated, you should have known better?

  23. NCStatePride 09/03/2010 at 12:22 PM #

Did John Blake board the bus? 🙂

You know, I try to take the high road. I really want to just worry about our team and not care about the Heels. Their problems don’t make us any better.

    BUT THIS IS FREAKING HILARIOUS!!!!
