Dave Glenn goes on the record; Baddour admits cheating could have gone back more than a year

Our local expert on smoke and fire involving controversial ACC stories Dave Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal had some facts to share on his afternoon radio show regarding the investigation into UNC’s athletic program. This isn’t verbatim, but it should be a close explanation of the facts he laid out.

1. Marvin Auston won’t play another game in a UNC uniform.

2. At least 5 players involved in Agentgate including Marvin Auston, Greg Little, Robert Quinn, Kendrick Burney, and Charles Brown. More names could be involved, but at least these five player have issues with prong #1 of the investigation.

3. Currently, there is no support in the UNC hierarchy(i.e. decision makers) for dismissing Butch Davis in the middle of the season.

4. The tutor involved in scandal has repeatedly hid behind her attorney as of 24 hours ago. He isn’t sure if that is still the case in the last 24 hours, but she hasn’t been speaking to anyone up until 24 hours ago. Individual universities and NCAA lack subpoena power, so finding out the truth is difficult. The Secretary of State has subpoena power, so it is much easier for legal entities to get people to talk. (Note: It was odd he mentioned up until 24 hours ago as that is exactly when the story that somebody involved in the investigation was “located” and/or started talking spread yesterday afternoon on the Internet.)

5. UNC turned over a preliminary report to the NCAA prior to the opening game hoping for detailed feed back from the NCAA as far as who to play/how to handle suspensions. The NCAA doesn’t work that way. NCAA wants the university to file a preliminary report, recommend penalties, and then the NCAA responds. This is a timely process because the NCAA doesn’t just respond quickly to the preliminary report as they may do their own investigation or at least they want time to digest the information in the preliminary report.

Baddour admits violations for 2nd straight day.

WILMINGTON — University of North Carolina Athletics Director Dick Baddour told the UNC system’s Board of Governors today that academic misconduct by members of the football team may date back a year or more.

Asked whether the cheating could have happened in prior years, Baddour said, “The short answer is yes. We will go where the information leads us. If that isn’t the immediate year … we will go where the information takes us.”

Baddour didn’t say anything more on that issue.

Lots of smoke around the Hill right now… I know I said last night or today but It’s still GAMETIME BABY

“The short answer is yes. We will go where the information leads us. If that isn’t the immediate year … we will go where the information takes us. Unless, of course, it takes us to the basketball program. But that’s just common sense I think.”

I realize I might be overly cynical here, but this appears to me to be a last ditch effort to admit how terrible everything is/was with FOOTBALL, and the intention of appearing dedicated to finding the truth about FOOTBALL.

From complete silence to “Wow, can you believe how much we cheated in Football (but nowhere else…I promise)”. Anyone else buying it?

To me it seems like damage control at this point. Damage control by way of silence is now on the verge of failure. Basically, this feels like an offer of contrition in hopes that the basketball program (and perhaps others) can still go untouched.

Just posted this on the TZ thread, but seems more appropriate here (sorry, bad timing … don’t mean to spam the threads 🙁 ).

One of the cherries in all this for me is like chop said, DG is getting more exposed as non-objective and as someone who takes it all personal.

He uses his job position as if it were an extension of who he is rather than what he does. It’s actually rather easy to manipulate him and his show and push his buttons because he uses airtime to defend himself and his viewpoints and tries to denounce others. MASSIVE EGO.

    In other words, typical Hole.

So I say have fun with that … otherwise IGNORE HIM.

Also consider that we may actually have a local version of Gregggggg Doyel … don’t underestimate the power of getting people to listen and call in by igniting a flame war.

INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION / They are trying like crazy to cover some of the terrible things up. Like someone who is investigating themselves is going to kill their on career by shining light on how completely incompetent they were.

The tutor is completely lawyered up and it’s going to take Subpoena power to break this wide open and that’s the last thing UNC wants… they want this tutor to disappear because if she talks ITS OVER

Also the press do know who this person is … they found out yesterday and have been straight stiff armed by her legal counsel… they have her dug in deep.

Maybe next, Baddour should read LT’s “Living on the Edge” in his quest to find out how far back the academic fraud goes…

I’m betting that Baddour is setting the stage to come out in the near future stating something to the effect of, “Because we determined these charges have existed for years, it isn’t just an isolated incident and the University simply won’t put up with this. For that reason, Butch Davis has decided to resign…”

  8. Pack05 09/09/2010 at 3:54 PM #

Butch stepping down could possibly happen as early as tomorrow evening… it’s out there, we’ll know soon enough.

  9. ppack3 09/09/2010 at 4:32 PM #

The SOS wouldn’t have any reason to subpoena the tutor UNLESS the two ‘prongs’ of this investigation were related!

  10. kbrown 09/09/2010 at 4:36 PM #

Pack05 you keep saying the same things and nothing has happened. Give us some sources??

  11. Pack05 09/09/2010 at 4:42 PM #

No I haven’t … everytime I have said to grab popcorn another story breaks. The next one is most likely Butch stepping down tomorrow. Is that specific enough.

What I mentioned yesterday was that the tutor has been found by the local media and if she is Subpoena in regards to the agent deal and how that tied into the academic fraud … look out.

  12. RegularExpression 09/09/2010 at 5:03 PM #

Butch stepping down tomorrow would not surprise me in the least. I think the only reason it has taken this long is that they need to work out the financial details of his severance, and they need to find a non-soiled assistant coach to take over. My guess would be OC John Shoop, since the DC was probably too connected to Blake.

^^ “What I mentioned yesterday was that the tutor has been found by the local media and if she is Subpoena in regards to the agent deal and how that tied into the academic fraud … look out.”

In reference to what you have stated there, would the term “follow the money” apply here? As in the money (or whatever inducements there might have been) paid to the tutor, and from whom/where that money ultimately came?

Just curious. That would link a lot of things and a lot of people together that the university most definitely does NOT want linked.

  14. packfan03 09/09/2010 at 9:31 PM #

    The tutor is…..drumroll……..

    The Lovely and talented Maria!

No wonder DG has refused to address the scandal! He has a witness living in his house! He’s probably under the same mysterious orders that Dickie B is, and isn’t allowed to speak.

    Consider the dots connected, folks.

I agree with wufpup. David Glenn in the past talked the BIG talk like he has ALL the connections at UNC-CH. He practically bragged about knowing the inside scoop about Matt Doherty when in fact it was time for Roy to take over so Glenn helped UNC smear Doherty.

So big shot Glenn if you knew so much about the Doherty situation why aren’t you giving us all the info on the UNC agent and cheat GATE?

Let’s face it. Glenn worked for Dennis Wuycik, former UNC basketball player who started the then known POOP SHEET. Touted has the inside info on the ACC but really a Carolina rag masquerading as independent.
Now the POOP SHEET is STILL POOP but is owned by Glenn and is known as the ACC sports journal.

If Glenn really did have the inside info like he wants to brag about then why isn’t he ahead of the events before they take place?
Or why isn’t he doing hard question interviews with Baddour, Davis or Thorpe.

Simple. He is a shill for UNCCH.

The all out UNC media blitz this morning sure is strange don’t ya think 😉

Pack05, a lot of the comments I’m reading here at SFN make it sound like most people here believe Cryolina will make it through this mess without too much of a problem. I get the impression that some think UNX basketball will get a pass, and with them doing their own internal investigation, that nothing will come of it.

You’ve posted some comments letting us know when things were about to happen, and have been largely correct about it. I get the feeling you can be trusted for the most part.

How do you see this whole thing playing out? Or more specifically, if you have a source close to home in this, how do THEY see things playing out?

I’m afraid they’ll get a slap on the wrist compared to what we endured under the Valvano investigation, when their transgressions were more egregious than ours. And that burns me up!
