When Dennis Horner hit the RBC Center hardwood with 18:13 left in Saturday’s game with Boston College, he got up with blood streaming down the right side of his face. Head coach Sidney Lowe said he wasn’t sure if the senior forward would return.

Return he did. All it took was a few stitches and some super glue. Horner proceeded to score 10 points in the final 10:55 to lead the Wolfpack past Boston College 66-54 on senior day. Horner finished with 14 points. Junior forward Tracy Smith led NC State with a game-high 19 points while CJ Williams added 14 of his own.

“I heard it and I walked out there and saw the blood, I was concerned,” Lowe said. “I didn’t know if he was coming back out or not and the next thing I knew he was sitting right there on the bench and I saw him and said ‘Jesus kid let’s go in the game’. It definitely was a scary moment.”

Horner said the hard foul by Boston College’s Josh Southern wasn’t a dirty play despite the result.

“I just landed, and I guess it landed right there and split it open,” Horner said of the gash just above his right eyebrow. “That’s basketball.”

Julius Mays, who scored six points and dished out four assists in 23 minutes, said he wasn’t a bit surprised to see Horner come back in the game and play well after everything he’s been through this season with injuries.

“Typical Dennis,” Mays said with a smile. “He’s always taking hard falls, getting hurt and staying hurt. Bad knees, always sick. To see him come back and play through it on senior night and knock down two or three big shots was a great feeling.”

While NC State ended up on a positive note, picking up its third win in four games, the beginning of senior night started about as poor as it could have. NC State turned the ball over six times in the first 4 minutes and 47 seconds and let BC get out to a six point lead at 8-2.

“Senior day didn’t start off well for us but I thought the guys did a good job coming off the bench and when those first unit guys came back in they continued to play well,” Lowe said.”Great, great effort on our teams part. We had a lot of guys that really contributed.”

After struggling for the first six minutes, NC State played well for the remainder of the game, using a 19 to five run to close out the game and the regular season. The Wolfpack did not commit a single turnover in the decisive second half and finished with just 10 for the game. Farnold Degand, the other senior honored prior to Saturday’s game, finished with one point in 15 minutes.

“The last couple of games in the ACC we’ve been clicking and when everyone is rolling we can play with anybody in the country,” Horner said. “We beat Duke, Wake Forest, at Florida State and at Marquette it shows that we can play with people. We’re just rolling into the tournament confident.”

Lowe said it’s good to see the team playing well late in the year after having suffered through tough losses early in the year and during the ACC season. He said his team is starting to figure out what it takes.

“We’re figuring out some things about ourselves and how we have to play to win. We’ve played better lately. We’re playing better than we played early in conference play and this is a little momentum for us,” he said. “It’s something to take into the tournament. It’s definitely a positive.”

NC State will take the court in the first round of the ACC Tournament Thursday night at 9 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Raycom.

Remember Horner also played with a broken nose I guess his freshman year.

Good job PACK, finishing with wins from 3 of 4!

Nice win from our untalented players, as everyone seems to think, with talent coming in next year. Again coaching, we have capable players without a coach capable of consistency. Bring him back and let mediocrity be our standard, and never compete at the top of the league. That is what we want?????? Not me, so send Sid packin, and Jed with him. One and out in ACC tournament, so if you wanna see state play, you will only need one day off from work. Thanks Sid, need my time off for more worthwhile things.

Okay, I am not a Sid hater (or lover) for that matter but did he really say the following quote??

“We’re figuring out some things about ourselves and how we have to play to win. We’ve played better lately. We’re playing better than we played early in conference play and this is a little momentum for us,” he said. “It’s something to take into the tournament. It’s definitely a positive.”

Should you figure these things out by the end of the preseason games, or at least during the out of conference games, not the last week of the regular season? Is it just me, really?

it was good to see thomas out there today. it seemed like the team got into a flow when he was out there!

Johnny Thomas played very well today and brought a lot of energy to the team today. I have watched him in warmups throughout his career and he has very impressive physical skills and can leap out of the gym. Has his knee finally come around or has he outplayed Davis this week in practice? If today’s play is any indication of his abilities, I would have liked to have seen a lot more of him this season. He reminds me of Dantay(?sp) Jones that used to play at Duke.

This crowd reminds me of the Democrats in 2008 who were hoping (privately and publicly) that the economy would get so bad that the voters would throw out all the Republicans and elect Obama with a totally Democratic Congress….so they could get some things DONE….

RIGHT….I will NOT go into the politics….but the comparison is spooky.

We had a GREAT win today. Most seniors are a little edgy on Sr. day…and it spills over into the team.

Sid made some great substitutions to get them focused. Horner in the post game said that Coach got us back on track…

SO….we get a great win…and it is trashed by those who want to see Sid hit the bricks…

    JESUS…to borrow Sid’s line.

If you look at our overall record, we are the “best” of the three teams (UNX & VA) tied for ninth.

    Even the N&O was complimentary.

I personally am looking for a win in the first round….although KLUMSOM will be smarting from the loss to WFU. After that, it will be up to the team.

I HATE to bring UP UNX….but Roy’s record speaks (as MUCH as we hate to say it….for itself). If HE can’t put together a winning line-up or get their ‘heads” fixed (they had a GREAT recruiting class…full of talent), then WHY are we so fixated on getting rid of Sid. We don’t have UNX’s talent. We have had some injuries…but not like before.

Why can’t we JUST ENJOY the victory…

I swear, this site is getting on my nerves….

GO PACK…I plan to be at the Food Court tomorrow night and at the ACC Tourney next week…

I was about to get excited until I realized that we were swept by both UNC and UVA. I got even more depressed when I stopped to consider that a fan thinks he can win the debate with the “we’re the best NINTH PLACE team” argument.

Nice win yesterday. Very happy for the seniors and the guys for closing out the regular season on a positive note.

5-11 certainly isn’t great, but it’s a lot better than 2-14 which is where this season could’ve headed when the team was 2-10 in conference play. Effort was there throughout save for the home game vs. VT, so the kids can be proud of that.

Was at the game – Howell put on a passing clinic. Very impressive. CJ Williams continues to impress late. Mays did a really nice job for Gonzalez. Nothing spectacular, but he didn’t make mistakes. Off the ball movement and screens continue to show up and improve over the last 4 games. Very glad for Horner. The guy stuck with us, is not the most physically gifted but gives it all he’s got and he had some huge plays today.

Odd seeing Thomas out there so much and so early. Happy for him, as he played really well grabbing rebounds and being a pest defensively. Perhaps he’s been winning the practice battles lately, and if so good for him.

Last but not least, I thought the defensive effort was pretty good today. A few mistakes, but overall solid – especially against a team that has blistered us in the past with their flex offense. Down 10-4 after the first TV timeout, I thought the team played some of the best D they’ve played all season over the next 7-8 minutes. And they closed the game outscoring BC 17-4 after being down 50-49 around the 5 minute mark. Nice job.

One note on the Southern foul against Dennis: at the game I didn’t have an angle to tell if it was flagrant. It didn’t appear so, and that was confirmed watching the tv replay. I don’t have a problem with that hard foul not being called intentional or flagrant. BUT, last season every play we had like that – including a couple that were no where near as bad as Southern’s – was called an intentional foul on us (the VT game anyone?). How about some freaking consistency with the calls refs? Otherwise, it just looks like you are butt-f*****g certain teams/players.

I am whining and comparing last season to this one is poor form, but we have earned our red-headed stepchild reputation for a reason. Consistency and fair shakes, please.

Oh? What’s that? This is the ACC? Nevermind. Forget all that consistency and even calling of games and stuff. Carry on. Oh and Duke and UNx FTW forever.

“If you look at our overall record, we are the “best” of the three teams (UNX & VA) tied for ninth.” As already pointed out we were swept by these two teams. Hard to argue we’re the best of them.

“….but Roy’s record speaks (as MUCH as we hate to say it….for itself). If HE can’t put together a winning line-up or get their ‘heads” fixed (they had a GREAT recruiting class…full of talent), then WHY are we so fixated on getting rid of Sid.” Uhhh. Roy has, as much as it makes me want to puke, won 2 NC’s. SL has won nothing. Roy therefore will get cut a little more slack by the Hole’s than will Sidney. In fact SL has already been cut way more slack than he should have been.

I sure can’t pull against State. Never have, never will. But at the same time “great” wins like this (how this win was great I do not know) can, with an admin like we have, prolong the agony of Sidney Lowe’s coaching tenure. So I’m glad we won, happy for the seniors, but dreading another season watching a poorly coached, poorly prepared team. As you rightly pointed out even great recruits need some coaching. You can argue that Roy has lost it. You can’t argue that Sidney ever had it.

“If you look at our overall record, we are the “best” of the three teams (UNX & VA) tied for ninth.”

Wow, what a truly AMAZING accomplishment. Too bad we were 0-4 against those two teams. You know what’s even worse? We weren’t even close in any of those games, losing by an average of nearly 12 points. What’s worse than that? If we had just split with each of those team we would have at least chance (ala Georgia Tech) of an at-large bid. But we weren’t even close. And we should have been.

I’m not trying to dampen yesterday’s win in any way. That was a big win if you consider NIT seeding an important development. I was very happy to see Horner go out on a high note. But let’s keep this all in perspective. We’re clearly not “there”, yet.

  13. Rick 03/08/2010 at 8:08 AM #

SL has averaged 5 ACC wins a year so he is right on target.

And you can get mad at this site all you want but you should turn your anger in the right direction. The NCSU athletic community. This site does not make the piss poor performance and this site would be a lot more fun to read if we did not suck so bad.

  14. Rick 03/08/2010 at 8:09 AM #

BTW the overwhelming number of posts tells you how much interest there is in NCSU basketball right now.

  15. EdMar 03/08/2010 at 8:16 AM #

WOW. We were overachievers! Picked to finish last and finished next to last

Maybe we can win at least on in the ACCT

I believe JT has been ready to play most of the year. Why he has not is beyond me. Josh Davis might have been getting his minutes but this makes no sense. Last year Mays was our leading scorer the last game of the season after he had not seen the floor for 2 months. This year all of a sudden Thomas is ready to play and did play well. My question would be where has he been all year.

Julius Hodge was heavy recruiting for us this weekend. Check his tweets. http://twitter.com/follow24hodge

“Got to chat with Ryan n CJ nice yung gents..CJ luved the chant great idea whoeva thunk of it;)its n da bag:-)Good Win today!LB n Luke wut up”

I don’t know what he means by “its n da bag” but hopefully CJ will recommit.

  18. choppack1 03/08/2010 at 9:51 AM #

rtpack – I’ll cut him some slack on Thomas. My understanding is that the nature of his injury is such that he’ll never be able to play and practice a lot.

The Mays thing from last year is harding to explain – as is Vandenberg playing hardly any at all in the second half of the season – and Painter getting his minutes. Painter’s better offensively, but Vandenberg has done a good job blocking jobs and rebounding when he’s in the game.

I think it’s great that this team and staff stuck w/it and won 3 of the last 4 games. It’s pretty disheartening when you think of the fact that if we’d just split w/ 2 5-11 teams, we’d be a very satisfying 7-9 in conference instead of our current record.

A lot of similarities between this year and 2008…It will be interesting to see how we respond in the tournament. We match up OK w/ Clemson – if we don’t sh*t in our pants we should be able to stay close.

It’s also good that we don’t have to face VaTech until Saturday – I think our match up w/ them is worse than anyone in the conference.

“BTW the overwhelming number of posts tells you how much interest there is in NCSU basketball right now.”

Wasn’t that kind of his point? Had we lost to an equally guardless, lower tier ACC team on Senior night after that terrible start how many posts would there be? What’s a fair number? x10? x20?

We win and it’s a ghost town in here. I can understand clocking out on this season, I really can, but why clock back in when we lose?

  20. coachkoh 03/08/2010 at 10:01 AM #

The other coach that was here lost games. In Sid’s case it is the players who lose the games?
^ No one really cares anymore it is called apathy. What was the crowd like? Tickets were 2 for 1?

  21. Dr. BadgerPack 03/08/2010 at 10:27 AM #

If Thomas is graduating early, or the he is leaving due to his knee, then yesterday may have been his “senior day” as well. I’m wondering if Sidney didn’t give him some time, and since he was doing well, extend that as far a Thomas’ knee would let him. It has long been speculated that Thomas’ scholarship would be available next year if needed.

Regardless, it was very nice to see him have a good game. And it was nice to see Horner walk off his home court for (potentially) the last time with a win. He deserved it; I’ll always give Horner a lot of respect for being the ONLY player to honor his commitment to NC State after the coaching change.
