Cothron Decommits

It is being reported on other sites that Cothron has decided not to attend NCSU. It is doubtful he would have been a starter ahead of Smith and Howell but he could have provided some depth.

Jerry Meyer of Yahoo Sports reported on Cothron’s decision Monday night.

Four-star prospect Luke Cothron has been considered a soft commitment to North Carolina State, but now the 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward is officially decommitted.

Cothron, an Alabama native who is now at Red Springs (N.C,) Flora Macdonald Academy, has opened up his recruitment and is likely headed elsewhere that NC State.

Cothron’s statement on his decision to decommit

“I want to come in and play as a freshman,” said Cothron. “I also want a good relationship with the head coach, and I want to be surrounded by a great team.”

This again leaves Sid with four 4 stars or better from Georgia and two 4 stars from NC. Thank goodness for this mysterious Georgia pipeline we are tapping or we would be in even worse shape (if that is possible).

Good to hear from you SG..

I think you should add Brown’s name to those that will be a good supporting cast for harrow as well. We should be able to score from any position next season.

I’m okay w/o Luke. A recommitment froom Leslie would make it much more better.

I am not sure that you do not have this backwards.

Before we get to excited about CJL, a player whose game I love and will only be in a college jersey for a year (two max), I heard he has the exact same attitude. Will want the ball to go through him, play a certain amount of minutes, the whole nine.

I’m sure there are others who have seen CJL play more often than I, but attitude wise, he appears to be very different than Luke. Luke’s attitude has question marks surrounding his effort and intensity – CJL has no problem with either of those aspects of the game. He is a hustler, that much I will tell you.

As far as assimilating with a team, I can’t be sure. I do think the chemistry he has with R. Harrow will help in this regard.

CJL is extremely talented, and is WELL aware of this fact. That much, I am certain of.

I wouldn’t classify either one of these players as “supporting cast”. They both have the talent to be stars in their own right. Hopefully, they live up to expectations.

Tashawn Mabry, who this season broke Phil Ford’s career scoring record at Rocky Mount High, is concentrating on his senior season instead of worrying a lot about his recruitment.

Lots of schools have talked to Mabry, Gainey said (H.S. Head coach), but N.C. State is the only major college that he knows of that has made a firm scholarship offer.

Why know excitement about Mabry? His team just won the State Championship and it says he average 24 pts, 8 rbs, and I’ve heard he averages between 4-5 blocks per game. He could be a solid addition too.

I have watched Luke play and was surprised how skinny he was. He does not hustle but was very talented in his offensive skills. I do not see him playing the 3 position and he is not strong enough to play the 4. I was wondering when I saw him play why we were recruiting him. Of course we have signed players that I do not understand. Several coaches have also told me that they would be surprised if he qualifies. Now if he signs with Kentucky that will not be a problem.

I admit what I know about CJL I mostly learned on this site. But if he is a one & done player, (and as some suggest) a prima donna, we don’t need that. We have enough problems of our own, why recruit more?

I think Howell will develop well. He seems like a hard worker. He probably needs to lose some weight, add some muscle and up his endurance like any freshman, but I like his potential. I think he’ll really shine next year, especially with a little more consistent outside scoring to loosen up the paint. Painter and big V are at least a year away, but it looks we’ll get more and more productive time from them. And I don’t see either going to the NBA early, if ever.

I think we’re okay if we miss on both bigs this year, but we’ll need to sign a couple next year.

” CJL has no problem with either of those aspects of the game. He is a hustler, that much I will tell you.”

I have seen CJL play about 8 times. You are not correct about him hustling. The only time I saw him hustle was when he could make some highlight play. A block, a dunk etc.
The rest of the time he was skating.

it makes 0 difference on our team next year with cothron’s loss. for one, if a player doesn’t want to come to NC State then we don’t need him THAT GOES FOR LESLIE TOO!

NEXT YEAR’S RECRUITING CLASS IS ALL ABOUT RYAN HARROW AND LORENZO BROWN. cothron means nothing. FORWARDS ARE ALMOST A DIME A DOZEN. HOWELL IS GOING TO BE A GREAT PLAYER. i see him staying until atleast his jr year. painter and vandenburg will develop into very good NC State players. i don’t know if vandenburg will ever really have alot of offense, but he is TOUGH. PLAYS HARD. we could stand to add a cothron and certainly a leslie. i don’t worry about effort when it comes to a leslie b/c there will be exponential options next year as compared to this year: ryan, javi, juls, wood, howell, painter, tracy, cj, davis, vandenburg, brown. <all these kids will see plenty of playing time.

what i like about cj leslie is that he looks like a good shot blocker. and a scorer. it would be great to add that to the team. the drawbacks are pretty obvious, he's a onedone and probably a premadonna. i'm uber excited about what will be added to the roster next year, it's gonna be awesome. cothron is really making a mistake, but with how his statement reads.. it sounds like he'll be better off elsewhere.

^ in short i could care less about this kid decommitting!

    ” in short ”

If you would make that a consistent effort then more people might read what you write.

I have not seen Leslie play 8 times, but I have seen him on various occassions. I have a different impression of him than you do. My impression is that he goes for those highlight plays, but that he does hustle as well. Every time I have seen him play he has been very active defensively and involved in passing the ball on offense. With that said, he definitely wants to put on a show with some highlights.

Shootinguard^ i notice you didnt mention Brown as one of the helpers for Harrow? you hearing he wont qualify?

From what I read elsewhere, his grades and qualifying are a big question mark. He’s got a lot of people in his ear telling him some SEC schools will “do what it takes” to get him in. His friends who haven’t committed are getting a lot of attention, and he’s not. He wants that attention and wants a big fuss made over him.

I also read that CJL really had nothing to do with it. Maybe Howell’s playing time, but not CJL.

The coaches also apparently have back up plans in place for Cothron and CJL.

I’m just happy it’s not Brown or Harrow.

  17. BJD95 03/16/2010 at 1:21 PM #

Brown does not have a qualifying test score. Don’t know about the others.

CJ Leslie has at least as many red flags as does Cothron. Now, perhaps they are different red flags (I am particularly concerned about his contact/involvement with 2 particular individuals), but it’s still playing with fire. Perhaps the people panning Cothron and hailing Leslie just think that Leslie’s upside potential better justifies the risks. Or, it’s typical homerism/spin.

    Fun, fun, fun.

the attitude problems and lack of defensive intensity aside this is starting to turn into a bad trend of decommits from our program under sid. luke was supposed to be the complimentary piece to harrow and brown to sure up our class of 2010 which was ranked by some in the top 10 and provide some depth. i wonder what our class grade is now

  19. blackdom 03/16/2010 at 1:25 PM #

^ Well if he is not going to qualify than fine ,but don’t think we are not in the same boat as those “SEC schools doing what it takes” Lo Brown if you need to be reminded did not qualify last year ,and has not yet. Also bear in mind that the bar to qualifiying is quite low.

  20. ibackthepack1160 03/16/2010 at 1:26 PM #

brown didnt qualify last year otherwise he would have been out there this year and if you guys are hearing he wont qualify again our great recruiting class of this year has just gone up in smoke at least harrow is on board and good to go

  21. ibackthepack1160 03/16/2010 at 1:30 PM #

i really like sid but if we dont land cjl and brown doesnt qualify AGAIN it might be time to start looking around next year he always has us in the final list of some great recruits but he doesnt land them or the decommit this is hardly a good thing

  22. frostyH 03/16/2010 at 1:44 PM #

In the Sophmore videos: Luke was equal or better than Leslie !!
In the Junior videos: There was no contest as Leslie was greatly improved and Luke had gone backwards.

Me thinks people pursuing Luke have only seen his sophmore videos.

I’m trying to stay positive, but out off the last two classes we have two decommitting and one having to go to another place for a year.

It just does not look right. Hopefully every thing will work out.

    Go pack

  24. rbwolf 03/16/2010 at 2:32 PM #

Here we go again. A decommit looks bad on us anyway you put it.

  25. Rochester 03/16/2010 at 2:35 PM #

I don’t think the decommit looks that bad against us. Does anyone hold Painter decommiting from Florida last year against them?
