The Rick Barnes Saga Continues to be Interesting

As I watched the first half of the Texas/Oklahoma State game tonight, I found myself watching intently and pondering what could have been. Who of us hasn’t over the last few years? What could have been? Or maybe would could still be!!! Many say this is a pipe dream at best, but is it really? Should we find ourselves in the market for a new coach sometime soon, is the prodigal NC son ready to return home?

Most of you know the connection between NC and Barnes. And then there’s infamous standoff with Dean at mid-court during a Clemson/UNC game which enamored Coach Barnes to most of us for eternity. Here’s a guy who is not intimidated by the Carolina “mystique”, he’s from NC and why again is he not our basketball coach?

So why might he leave Texas to come to Raleigh? Curious I just spent took a whirl over at the UT Rivals site. On the front, home page of the site there are literally NO basketball articles or major entries. Not one. It’s entirely football related (spring practice, recruiting, etc) and there’s one baseball entry. Here UT finds itself ranked in the Top 25 (although sitting at the disappointing position of 21 considering early season rankings – oh Lord may we one day have such “problems”), squarely looking at an NCAA Tournament bid in the face (again Lord, please?), and there is not a single entry on the front page of their primary fan site about basketball.

So let’s take the leap to the basketball main page. The top story is a complete slam at Barnes… a portion of which is entitled “The Blame Game” and starts something like: “the Texas meltdown can be blamed squarely on Barnes who hasn’t motivated his team… blah…blah…blah.” In the paragraph prior to that the author admits that Barnes ALWAYS has his team playing hard and rebounding well which keeps the team in almost every game. Again… why is it Lord can we not have such “problems?” You really should take a moment to read this. And they call our fans out of control…

Hell the Rivals site even has a baseball story on the BASKETBALL PAGE!!! While this, hopefully, is just an editor’s error, the irony is not lost me. The next most recent story is a blurb about Texas’ 40-point drubbing of conference foe Nebraska. This story was posted on Valentine’s Day. There’s no love in it much for Barnes, however. If you want to read some quotes from a frustrated coach after a win… read Barnes’ quotes here. He’s clearly perturbed at the heat being placed on him. There’s also an awful lot of talk about rifts within the program. You won’t be sorry for taking a moment to do so. I think if you do, you’ll see some hope for NC State sprinkled in there.

The second half of the Texas/Oklahoma State game has started. I’m going to turn my attention back to game and watch this thing unfold. Another loss could mean Meltdown City in Austin. Please share your thoughts and anything you find on this topic as it’s become very, very, very interesting with Texas admittedly under-achieving this year. Undoubtedly the Longhorn fans and Texas media has already turned on Barnes MUCH quicker than anything that’s ever happened around here.

Quite simply, the guy would be looked at as nothing short of a savior here… a golden god of sorts. There’s good reason to think given a few potential changes that are likely to occur soon along with some influence from some friends of the University, that Barnes could find his way to Raleigh some day. If it’s going to happen, I hope it’s sooner rather than later.

LKN – I still think he’s a very good coach – and I love his teams’ toughness but the main drawback I see w/ Barnes is his failure to win conference championships – and a relatively mediocre NCAA tournament record.

He gets lots of criticism for having very talented teams that ultimately don’t achieve much when it counts.

His problems, are problems that only a successful coach will have. Like I said, I consider him probably the best current coach to never win a national championship (besides Calipari)- and I’d rather have him coaching my team than a few coaches who HAVE won national championships right now.

there is no saga folks. he has a position where the recruits come to him, and there is no pressure to win. these things are flipped at State, which is also why Calipari didn’t want to come here (along with the tighter academic standards).

IMO, we should have done everything we had to do to hire this guy 9-10 years ago. People who say he would be the 4th best coach simply dont remember the teams he put together at Clemson (I stress this….Clemson), way better than what Purnell is doing. And besides, 4th best is about 8 spots better than 12th best. At this point, I can live with being the average 4th best team in the ACC, at least for a while. Personally, I think Barnes would do a lot better than that.

We should have went after that Barnes guy back in 2006 after we fired Sendek for the safety of his family.

    “There’s a fairly simple solution there that I would call a “win-win”.”

    Quote of the Day, folks.

“People who say he would be the 4th best coach simply dont remember the teams he put together at Clemson (I stress this….Clemson), way better than what Purnell is doing.”

I don’t think that’s true if you look at their best records at Clemson.

However, he certainly won faster than Purnell did and he turned around Clemson in relatively quick fashion. And I think Barnes’ style would have had more success long term at Clemson than Purnell’s will as well.

Is anyone aware of Barnes’ contract situation? Obviously, even in a hypothetical world, this matters.

  7. beer03 02/25/2010 at 11:16 AM #

IMO, some of those Eldon Campbell teams at Clemson were way better then Purnell’s. But that just an opinion.

I live in Austin and have been here for the past 5 years (’02 graduate from the College of Design). A few weeks back when there were postings about the “dismal” attendance at the RBC for Wolfpack games I thought about posting something to show the attendance at UT games. On November 15th for their season and home opener (when Texas was pre-season ranked #3 in the country) there was an announced crowd of 6,471 people. And that was generous. Even after football season was over, attendance is rarely over 13,000 for conference games and the only time they come close to a sellout is for 2 or 3 rivalry games. Without even running the numbers I can safely say that NC State’s 2010 average basketball attendance is much higher than Texas’ – despite Texas having the far superior team on the court.

My fiancee’s brother is a freshman at UT. When Texas climbed to #1 in mid January (about the time the kids got back from winter break) I asked him if he and his friends were planning on going to any games. He said baseball season didn’t start until mid February. When I corrected him and said I was talking about basketball he said “oh. nah, nobody really cares about basketball here and i heard the games are really boring”. I can’t imagine how boring it must be to go from cheering a National Championship contending football team for 3 months to “only” having the #1 basketball team in the country.

Friends and I have discussed what will become the tipping point for Barnes to grow tired of the lack of student support, lack of fan interest, lack of media attention and lack of University program prestige and just walk away to go somewhere that would give him top billing and due respect. Watching Barnes on the sidelines I know there *must* be a sense of frustration in building a championship-level team and having people yawn in your general direction. But I just don’t see it happening. It’s easy living in Austin and working a job where nobody really expects anything from you is pretty rare. The attitude is quite literally “if you win, great. if not, no big deal. spring football practice is about to start up anyway.”

I’d love the thought of bringing a proven winning coach to Raleigh. But I honestly think the program-building fire is gone from Rick’s belly and – as ncsu05mit10 said above – he’ll likely finish his coaching career in Texas pursuing a national championship. Would have been a great move 4 years ago but this ship has sailed.

  9. ncsu05mit10 02/25/2010 at 11:35 AM #

I don’t think there are any State fans out there that wouldn’t love to see Barnes on our sidelines right now.

But there is a notion– as I’ve been guilty of it myself — to think that Barnes would be the “savior” of NCSU basketball and would have us competing for championships with Roy almost immediately.

My point was that IF we’re making a change after next season, do you want to put all the marbles on a 57 year old coach who’s shown he has trouble winning championships? Wasn’t this why we were all so frustrated with Sendek?

Other than UNC or UK, how many successful teams out there get their coach from already successful major conference schools?

Maybe we could get Jeff Capel if the time were to come.

  10. choppack1 02/25/2010 at 11:47 AM #

ncsu05mit01 – Sendek frustrated fans for a wide variety of reasons – not just because he didn’t cut down nets.

    He didn’t beat rivals.
He didn’t advance far in the NCAAs.
No lead in a big game was ever safe.
He didn’t win conference regular season titles.

And oh yeah – he missed the tourney his first 5 years in Raleigh.

I do think that there are some similarities – but like I said, I think Barnes is HWSBN on steriods.

  11. ncsu05mit10 02/25/2010 at 11:58 AM #

^^^ I totally agree with you.

But Barnes’ Texas record would certainly have many State fans frustrated, though a clear upgrade from anything we’ve had in 20 years.

February 25th, 2010 at 7:27 am “roy sucks, couldn’t win at kansas and it took someone else recruiting a winning team before he knew what to recruit.”

Are you nuts? He has two national championships in 5 years and I would not bet against a few more.””

nope not nuts, time after time he failed to win a nc at kansas. he was handed successful program there too. he just didn’t have to compete as hard in that conference. his successor was able to accomplish what he couldn’t in short order. my point is that roy was handed a nc caliber team to which he implemented a system that was very similar to what donuts was doing. then on the coat tails of that team’s nc, he was able to grab a similar roster and do the same. if he’s so f’in great, why did unc-ch go from atop the conference to the bottom? he’s got plenty of talent, i would trade our backcourt up with them anyday.. before they drank the toxic koolaid of our rival. he is not a “great” coach. he bats for average, nothing better. more proof could very well be on its way next year. i have several tarhole friends, when they confirm that he’s not the “best” coach, there’s no other way to look at it. yes, he will retire and probably be competitive atop the acc for a few more years. but he’s shot his wad…

  13. Wolfy__79 02/25/2010 at 12:23 PM #

has clemson won in chapel hill yet? well, barnes didn’t while he was there. don’t bring that jynx with you please…

  14. Wolfy__79 02/25/2010 at 12:28 PM #

although i would take barnes in a second, i remind you that NCSU is one of the toughest jobs in the country. if someone of that caliber were to come, expectations would be at an all time high. this job might be better suited for a younger guy on the way up, a little more under the radar…

  15. Dogbreath 02/25/2010 at 12:42 PM #

How many active coaches have a national championship? Less than a dozen is my guess.

  16. packfan03 02/25/2010 at 12:58 PM #

Let me preface the following with my support of Coach Lowe returning next season:

In the parallel universe that NCSU is able to hand pick it’s next HC(which I disagree with), why isn’t there more mention of Mark Few? He’s seven or eight years younger than Barnes and been nothing but successful at a mid-major. Granted, he’s never been past the sweet 16, but he also doesn’t have the benefit of playing high-level opponents for much of the season (thus lacks the preparation for such tests in the tournament). Still, he can recruit and win.

Again, can’t wait for Lowe to come back next year!

Thanks for the insight Elvislives… excellent points.

  18. choppack1 02/25/2010 at 1:18 PM #

    Dogbreath:
    1) Roy – 2
    2) Billy Donovan – 2
    3) Bill Self – 1
    4) Jim Calhoun – 2
    5) Coach K – 3
    6) Tubby Smith – 1
    7) Rick Pitino – 1
    8) Tom Izzo – 1
    9) Gary Williams – 1

Of coaches not on that list that have been to multiple final 4s – there’s Ben Howland and John Calipari

So I think you could make the argument that Rick is easily the 12th best coach out there…translation – that’s a huge step up for us.

Retired still alive: Nolan Richardson, Tark, Dean Smith, John Thompson, Roy Massimino, Lute Olson, Bobby Knight, Michigan Coach – Steve something or other…

  19. Rick 02/25/2010 at 1:26 PM #

“my point is that roy was handed a nc caliber team to which he implemented a system that was very similar to what donuts was doing.”

Your hatred of UNC is showing as there is little to no argument that Roy is an awful coach. He has had one bad year in what 30? He has won 2 national championships, how many final fours. And how did Doherty do with that talent that “handed” Roy a championship. If you do not like him fine but to say he sucks is just out right wrong beyond belief.

You think NCSU would like a coach that sucks like that? Our coach has been 10,11,10 and 11 in the league. That is a coach that sucks.

  20. wolfie91 02/25/2010 at 1:27 PM #

choppack and ncsu05mit10, i think we’re of the same mindset. Barnes seems to be a man with a ceiling – albeit one that is higher than that of our previous coach and arguably higher than the one of our current coach – but a ceiling nonetheless. Going from Coach Lowe to a man who might do a little better than Coach Sendek – is that really what we want?

  21. Wolfy__79 02/25/2010 at 1:40 PM #

lol, ok ok… our coach sucks. roy sucks in other forms i suppose.

  22. choppack1 02/25/2010 at 3:11 PM #

wolfie91 – I’d take it in a heartbeat. He’s likely to be the most successful we’ve had (by a longshot) in 20 years.

I’d just hope that if he comes here he starts winning those conference championships!

  23. elvislives 02/25/2010 at 3:32 PM #

    @ choppack1:
Would you take it in a heartbeat or in One Heartbeat?

  24. GAWolf 02/25/2010 at 3:53 PM #

Wolfie91`: But what is a ceiling at that level? I would propose to you that if you’re at that level… where a Final 4 is at least attainable… then you’re close enough where some lucky breaks can win you a national championship. Uhh… ’83 comes to mind. Folks not at least at the Barnes level don’t have a chance in hell of getting close enough to get lucky.

  25. wolfonthehill 02/25/2010 at 3:57 PM #

“So I think you could make the argument that Rick is easily the 12th best coach out there…translation – that’s a huge step up for us.”

I disagree – I believe we already HAVE the 12th best coach out there.

Wait – what’s that? 12th in the COUNTRY? Not just the league?

    Hmph.
