UNC’s Davis already signed with an agent?

Maybe we can talk about something not related to NC State?

DraftExpress.com currently has Ed Davis as a lottery pick in the 2010 draft. More specifically, the site thinks that he will be the fifth player taken overall. As I said earlier, Davis is going to miss some time due to a broken wrist, but he might not be able to play another game for UNC for another reason. Yesterday, a reader sent me a link to an agency titled, PTA Sports Management. The Founder/CEO of PTA Sports Management is an attorney named Vincent “Vinnie” Porter. Interestingly, if you go to their Clients page, you will find Ed Davis’s name listed among their Basketball Clients. There is no picture of Ed Davis, but if you click on his name, you will see that it is the same Ed Davis from Benedictine High School.

This is interesting, as I had not previously heard that Ed Davis signed with an agent and forfeited his remaining student-athlete eligibility. Has Davis committed to Porter and PTA Sports Management through a written or oral agreement, or is PTA Sports Management holding itself out as the agent of someone that they do not represent?

Link to page where Ed Davis was listed.

Amazingly enough while trying to write this entry, Ed Davis has been removed from the clients page. Strange. He was definitely listed a few minutes ago.

Update:
The Big Lead on Twitter claims to have spoken with the agency’s CEO and he admitted it was a mistake.

Another update from the N&O:

Porter said he believes someone hacked his site, ptasportsmanagement.com, and added information that looked as it he had been cut-and-pasted from the UNC’s media guide — such where Davis played in his school, his high school statistics, his family information. Davis’ picture had not been added to the site, and the information did look different from what was listed for other clients.

All of Davis’ information had been taken off the site by 10:10 a.m.

“We have no commitment, nothing verbally or written from Ed Davis,” Porter said.

The agent, though, said he has had contact with the Davis family; Davis’ father, Terry, is a former NBA player. Asked who contacted who, Porter said he and the family had a mutual friend in Richmond, Va., and “initially, they would have contacted me through that friend.”

Asked when the contact was made, Porter would offer no more details.

Someone hacked their website? Sure.

Is it against the rules to reach an agreement in principle with an amateur athlete? If I’m an athlete who still has eligibility left, can I tell an agent, “OK, I’m *going* to sign with you” and just not receive compensation?

  2. Daily Update 02/18/2010 at 10:06 AM #

I think that is fine and that is probably the scenario to that has already happened. Most likely, the guy managing the website just hit the publish button by accident.

The bio of Davis was really weird though. It made no mention that he ever played for UNC. Odd.

    Noah, verbal agreements are illegal.

“Under NCAA Bylaw 12.3, a student-athlete (any individual who currently participates in or who may be eligible in the future to participate in intercollegiate sport) may not agree verbally or in writing to be represented by an athlete agent in the present or in the future for the purpose of marketing the student-athlete’s ability or reputation. If the student-athlete enters into such an agreement, the student-athlete is ineligible for intercollegiate competition.” from ncaa.org

    “verbal agreements are illegal”

If this were an organization with any basis in law, that would be nonsense (how could you ever prove it?) but since this is the NCAA, I’m surprised they haven’t tried to use this before (or have they and I just don’t remember it?)

NCAA: “Sorry, you made an agreement with an agent, you’re ineligible”
    Athlete: “No, I didn’t”
NCAA: “We are an independent organization, and what we say goes.”

It seems to me that the only real effect is that an agent can’t go back later and try to sue an athlete if he agrees to be represented and then changes his mind *cough*Reggie Bush*cough*, since the existence of the agreement is not legal (and I think its not legal from the agent side, as well, but i’m not sure)

Sounds like Roy has a pro playing for him. I am pretty sure you can’t continue to play if you have signed with an agent. Again this is par for the course for Roy Williams. What a classy , good coach with two nc’s under his belt at unc. This should be a direct reflection on him. Good eye Daily update.

NCSUfan13 nice research. If this was inforced, numerous players would be ineligble already. Half of Kentucky’s roster would be inelible. Cal’s right hand man WWW has them lined up with agents the day they sign with Ky or where ever Cal is coaching. Dereck Rose had his agent before he got out of high school. Proving this is a whole nother matter.

If he is listed on their website sounds like he gave them a little more than a nod. I don’t think committing in any way to an agent is really gray area Noah. Funny how the baby blue always get the benefit of the doubt with certain folk.

I just googled it and the blogosphere is abuzz with this story. I would not buy a story that the info was cut and pasted by a hacker. If someone is sophisticated enough to hack why would they crudely cut and paste it. Sounds like they changed direction once the story got out. Teflon Roy. Just another example of his blatant disregard for NCAA rules. People dis Sid over rumors and UNX has a player listed as being rep’d by an agent and it’s the old Barney Fife “nothing to see here”. It is funny to see the legs of a story get cut off in front of your eyes.

This might explain why it took 2 days before UNC knew his wrist was broken. They almost lost Graves after first semester due to grades.

I love the “hacked website” excuse.

“….Porter said he and the family had a mutual friend in Richmond, Va., and “initially, they would have contacted me through that friend.””

Notice the phrasing here. Its interesting that he phrased this to sound like a hypothetical statement that COULD be true (…initially, they WOULD HAVE contacted…) rather than a recollection of what actually happened (…initially, this is how we came into contact…).

Subtle difference, and perhaps its nitpicking, but this sounds like a guy who wants to sound like he’s denying, but at the same time reserve plausible deniability if it ever becomes necessary.

    Just sayin’…

  12. ncsufan13 02/18/2010 at 1:15 PM #

So someone just happened to “hack” their website while at the same time they have a “mutual friend” who is actually in contact with the kid? Hahaha, these guys are grade A dumbasses. Who would honestly believe that explanation?

They spilled too much information, how can the NCAA not bring the hammer down on such incompetence??

  13. Noah 02/18/2010 at 1:18 PM #

People dis Sid over rumors and UNX has a player listed as being rep’d by an agent and it’s the old Barney Fife “nothing to see here”.

Oh okay, well I guess we better sign **** to an extension. Guess we know what the next excuse is.

  14. tjfoose2 02/18/2010 at 1:56 PM #

Sounds like the “depends what the meaning of ‘is’ is” excuse.

  15. TomPack 02/18/2010 at 2:15 PM #

Getting this taken care of for UNC is nothing…never forget that Derrick Fenner (sp?) managed to beat a murder rap and then quietly left after the end of the football season.

They spilled too much information, how can the NCAA not bring the hammer down on such incompetence??

Because it’s their beloved Carolina. The NCAA loves ’em some Tar Heels.

If one of our players so much as DAYDREAMED about signing with an agent, we’d get the death penalty.

  17. jaybird80 02/18/2010 at 2:35 PM #

Nothing to see here. Everybody move along. We have some rug sweeping to do.

  18. Rochester 02/18/2010 at 2:58 PM #

Maybe we can apply for a forfeit in the game Davis played against us. That could get us out of last place and save Sid’s job.

  19. Cosmo96 02/18/2010 at 3:02 PM #

So we have the Wayne Ellington thing, the Corey Miller thing, and now this. Something will come from some of this, right? I mean, there’s too much smoke not to be any fire, and at least one of these transgressions will be proven to have some truth to them, right? Something’s gotta stick here.

LOL! Sometimes I say crazy things!

It looks like Davis is gone and now Roy boy has to play Henson and can’t hide him. He may go too. Rumors are he says he will strongly consider jumping. Maybe he doesn’t want to play on ‘Barnes team’ next season. No wonder Roy looks like he has aged 5 years so far this season. He seems really unhappy.

  22. packbackr04 02/18/2010 at 4:09 PM #

cosmo^ what about the hansborough thing?

  23. Wolfy__79 02/18/2010 at 6:51 PM #

personally, i hope davis does go pro. it will be funny watching him sit on the bench. he is not that good. sure he can be, but really has nothing to offer to the nba… hopefully this happens. hinson is farther along than davis. hinson is actually good enough. see you powder puffs later!
