Butch Davis’ program is “nowhere” in year three

Don’t take my word for it. Listen to one of UNC’s resident motor-mouths, Marvin Austin.

In preparation for today’s game, the Charlotte Observer reminded the world how the North Carolina football program is not yet considered ‘elite’ despite two straight seasons of Meineke Car Care Bowl appearances after winning a whopping 66% of their regular season games padded against weak out of conference opponents. (Thanks, Observer. Who would have ever been able to come to that conclusion without you?)

In the article, Marvin Austin comments that Carolina is “nowhere” close to achieving what he was recruited for, “Because when I came in, I was looking at a national championship”.

In his nonsensically circular quote, Austin goes on to proclaim that Carolina still has a chance to win a National Championship…in FOOTBALL. Since nobody I know expects Austin to return to Chapel Hill next year, when does old MA ‘think they have a chance to win a National Championship’?

“I don’t think we’ve accomplished what I came in to do,” Austin said. “Because when I came in, I was looking at a national championship. And I still think we have a chance to do that. We haven’t even won the ACC championship yet, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do. We’re nowhere. Eight wins is not enough.”

If you really want a lot of fun paying attention to Austin’s comments – and make no mistake about how badly he wants you to listen to him and follow his comments – then you should check out his (in)famous Twitter account by clicking here. Other than some of his drinking and sexual tweets, I think some of my favorites are the references to some of the strip bars this college junior frequents. I’m sure that the attention drawn by some of his tweets have led to a thorough sanitization of the really good stuff.

You can use this entry for today’s Carolina-Pitt matchup in the Meineke Car Care Bowl (as well as any other football and basketball games you would like to discuss).

I appreciate the UNX Article. I hate they way they are the darlings of the media. I also think they have some major sportsmanship issues. ABC all the way.

I lost 25% of my IQ just scanning that dumb-ass’s Twitter feed…

Wow the unc criticism really struk a nerve with some apparent unc fans. Geez maybe some are new fans but there has always been a little tension between the two programs. I loved thse rival articles as they offer reasons for why we dislike the program over there instead of just saying its a crappy shade of blue.

“New” fans have been conditioned by the NC State administration to bend over and take it from UNC gladly.

“‘We are infinitely further ahead about targeting guys that we know will fit our culture,’ Davis said.”

How can any true red blooded NC State fan ask why would there be some kind of article that points out something ridiculing UNC? Probably because trolls wear funny hats.

I enjoyed the piece. If you want to read things that shine a positive light on your boys go read the N&O or Charlotte rag….they can still find a way to polish a turd I’ve found.

I could not be happier with the outcome of the tire bowl and the collapse of yet another Butch Davis season. Although I would love to have the last 3 minutes back from reading that idiotic twitter feed.

    Carolina lost AGAIN?

I wonder what T.S. Eliot would have to say about this?

“This is the way the season ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.”

They are a better program than ncsu.it takes balls to be critical of their losing a bowl game while we sit home finishing 11 of 12.why not talk about their awful bb team which has lost games on the road to those weak texas and kentucky teams.

Tar Heels let another one slip away
    by Brett Friedlander

“There are things that young football teams have got to do,” a tight-lipped Davis said afterward. “We’ve got to learn from this. …You just can’t go out there and shoot yourself in the foot and not give yourself a chance to win the game.”

Then there was this from the Fayetteville Observer…

Next year, no excuses for UNC
    by Sammy Batten

So what if UNC made some bonehead plays that basically handed the victory to Pittsburgh? It’s a young team and young teams make mistakes.

Ahhh, the “Youth” excuse. My, I haven’t heard that since the first 4 weeks of the season ended. I’m so glad that at the end of 3 full years of Davis that his team is still regressing in age.

^^^REALLY? How do you come to that? They haven’t beat us in over 3 years. We are kicking their ass in recruiting this year, AND we have done more with TOB recruits at whatever ranking than all the so called “elite” recruits that BMFD has brought in the past few years.

Have you looked at the difference in our facilities? That pretty much blows what their “program” has to compare to NCSU right out the window. Just because they went to a lower tier bowl game and lost again does not make them a better program. wake up. Plus we got big balls.

On a related issue on more unclassy behavior from UNC types here is another link I just received on Roy’s :”Citizen’s Arrest!” moment with the Presbyterian fan.
A very good unbiased criticism of Barney Roy Fife.

    http://ncaabasketball.fanhouse.com/2009/12/20/roys-tongue-commits-unc-turnovers/?ncid=txtlnkusspor00000002

Terence Moore gives us another example of Roy acting like the big shot he apparently has grown into since he has two rings like Daddy Deano.

    ^ Nice one,

ole’ Roy uses profanity repeatedly in press conferences more than anyone I’ve ever heard , after the Marshall game he just drops them like he’s “above the law” big Ern style and nobody has a word to stay about it. If he gets the least bit agitated by a question, here they come.

I am proud of the fact that atleast our coach is extremely professional in the way he deals with people and the media whether he works out long term or not. Roy is a “expletive”

    1) I hate unx. Anything that SFN can do to point out their (and the media’s) hypocrisy is A-OK with me.
    2) If some of you don’t like negative unx posts (like some of you say you actually LIKE roywonderboy, HOLY COW!) then I suggest you don’t post in those thread. If no one posts then they die and new ones don’t pop-up.

    3) I was in the car one day when BD 1st came and heard the Cheif say in an interview that in 3 years they’d be playing for an ACC championship and in 5 for a NC. How’s that working out so far? (may have been on Packman or something). Yeah, we’ve had our problems but at least TOB hasn’t lied for money.

Interesting that Butch talks about “the little things.”

See, here’s the deal – when you are willing to sacrifice “doing things the right way” for a win, then these things will often happen.

Greg Little, the game after taunting an opponent on the ground w/ a torn ACL, kicks the ball in the stands after scoring a TD. His punishment, he comes right back in the game.

The Byrd incident wasn’t Littles’ first.

People notice things…And when a player realizes he can do pretty much whatever he wants as long as he makes the next play – he plays w/a certain recklessness. In some cases, this works out -after all, football is a game of aggression – but as we saw under Chuck Amato “cutting it loose” has some negative consequences that tend to cost you your share of close games.
