Wolfpackers speak loud and clear

Don’t let anyone tell you that NC State fans can’t get along!

Heading into today’s college football action Wolfpacknation is united firmly behind one team — the Clemson Tigers.

All through this week SFN has run the following poll on the right side panel of our blog:

Clemson & Boston College are battling for the Atlantic Division Championship. As an NC State fan, which school would you prefer to represent the Atlantic against Georgia Tech in Tampa, FL.

The answer was a resounding chorus of Tiger Rag as the following results have been logged with 665 voters:

Boston College (10.0%, 66 Votes)
Clemson (90.0%, 599 Votes)

Update: at 12:35pm there doesn’t seem to be much concern for the Tigers as UNC-CH is ALL OVER the Eagles leading 21-0 in the first quarter.

You can use this entry to discuss today’s college football games…but, we encourage you to be active about a host of topics on our newly re-designed message boards that have experienced a tremendous amount of traffic recently. Link to our forums.

BC trying to make a game of it… had a chance to get deep into unc-ch territory only down 21-13, but Shinskie Shinskied the thing about 3 yards too wide. Both QB’s in this game, quite honestly, suck.

Carolina’s defense really makes plays. Their offense is still pretty bad. Gotta give BC credit for fighting through and grinding it out. They could be done a lot.

Carolina’s D is truly stout – they don’t lay back, allow the offense to make plays in front of them, try to contain, and hope the offense makes a mistake (sound familiar???). They attack up front, they attack in the secondary, their linebackers attack… they force the action, they force turnovers, they SCORE. Reminds me of our early-90’s defenses in a lot of ways, although Buddy would play contain a bit, as well. But with folks like Vinson and Campbell roaming the backfield, receivers sure didn’t feel comfortable running a crossing route underneath.

And I can’t help notice the contrast between how a unc-ch game goes vs a Pack game. In a State game, as a rule we have to overcome whatever questionable calls and funny bounces happen… since they invariably go the other way. In the span of a few minutes just now, unc-ch was the beneficiary of a toss-up call on offsides, a ridiculous spot on 3rd down that game them a first, and a punt that bounced backward on its second bounce… on astroturf… at the 1/2 yard line. None of those things happens for us… no, for the Pack we get Clemson clearly fumbling the ball, but having the replay booth completely botch the call, letting Clemson score to kill the momentum we’d built and take away our chance to come down and tie or take the lead.

I’d love to just get breaks occasionally… it feels like it simply never happens… and it’s a lot to overcome.

Ugh – and a second fair catch inside the 10 by Gunnell. 3rd straight possession starting inside their own 10… not gonna help their chances here…

A BC loss means they will fall as low as possible in the bowl pecking order. So really, it’s ok if the damned Holes win.

I’m still scared Clemson will pull a Clemson today if they need the win to wrap up the Atlantic.

Clemson wraps it up. HAts off to Dabo doing what Tommy couldn’t do, this in his first full year.

Anyone besides me think the FORUM page is harder to read & navigate on than before.

Two columns; “updates/?” [on a Forum page?]; and everything jumbled together… it’s visually cluttered & confusing. T’was much simpler before, and worked for my simply brain.

I agree Howlie. Having a very hard time with it myself. Not visually efficient on a Blackberry.

BJD – awfully small consolation… I mean, granted – I don’t by any means want BC in another conference championship game… but God, I hate watching unc-ch win in ANYTHING.

Which made last night’s ass-whipping especially enjoyable. 😉

The 90% who voted for Clemson obviously don’t live in the Upstate. Because if you did, and you had to listen to what I have to listen to 24/7/365, there is no way you would want them in the championship game.

You got it savotage. These guys are totally misled by the land grant/agricultural/engineering school connection. Clempson might even be as obnoxious as those folks who live in Chapel Hill. Their fans are all WalMarter’s!

Do not count me in your statistics as ever having supported a University that got away with cheating, gets away with cheating. I’m proud to say that both of my kids turned down scholarships to Clempson!

    There is no “Z” in Clempson! It’s a “P”!

A Wolfpack blog and we are discussing Clemson and BC as the hot topic for the day. This is sad, very sad.

Going to game in Tampa. Definitely wanted Clemson vs GT. Game and crowd should be much better than if BC was here.

Though I do fully understand what you mean, I’ve always believed in the old adage that good teams create their own “breaks”. To be painfully honest, we have not been anywhere near good enough to where we should expect those sorts of breaks (ie receiving the benefit of the doubt from officials on close calls).

And we are not a good enough football team to capitalize on them even if we did get them. Furthermore, our opponents’ breaks are not only a result of their good fortune, but also our misfortune, which quite likely has more to do with poor preparation and execution than any real “misfortune”. Case in point…VT’s receiving of 2 big “breaks” today were because we did not execute well and fumbled the football to them twice in our first 3 offensive plays from scrimmage. And of course there were other “breaks” they received today that came from the same source.

And as far as the poll regarding the choice between Clemson and BC, I misread it earlier in the week when I voted. Apparently I must have skimmed it instead of actually reading every word and I thought it was asking who we BELIEVED would represent the Atlantic, not who we WANTED to represent. I voted Clemson, but even had I known it was a popularity contest I would still have voted Clemson. I understand the disdain that many of you have for them, but while all of that is understandable (and true) I am one who believes that BC does not belong in the ACC to begin with, and I will never pull for them to win anything in the conference. Clemson and their fans might be annoying at times, but they ARE ACC thru and thru, and they do represent the Carolinas and the southeast, not Massachusetts or New England.

An ACC Championship Game being played in Tampa (or anywhere else for that matter) should never even have the outside chance of having one of its participants be from New England.

    Just sayin’.

I hear ya, Wufpacker… but some of these breaks have zero to do with “making your luck” or anything like that. They’re officials’ calls. They’re a ball literally bouncing in a way that I’ve never seen it bounce before. And I’ve never seen the Pack on the positive end of calls or bounces like that as a rule, even when PR was here & we WERE good enough to “deserve” it.

And on the flip side, (and I do hate to focus on unc-ch, but that game is what triggered the comment), I don’t recall seeing unc-ch be anything BUT the beneficiary of such breaks.

Just kinda gets old, when you know what’s going to happen, then it does…

You’re funny Highstick. I too have a special disdain in my heart for Clemson. I only pull for them against UNC. The BC alum I know don’t really care about sports. Kind of hard to conjure up hateful feelings toward them.
