Provost Larry Nielsen Resigns

WRAL’s report:

North Carolina State University Provost Larry Nielsen resigned abruptly Thursday morning, citing repeated questions over his hiring of the wife of former Gov. Mike Easley.

Our initial take is that Nielsen’s departure is the first fallout from this front page story in the News & Observer this weekend, citing the Easleys’ relationship with a Board of Trustees member.

Nielsen will step down as provost, but continue working for the university as a faculty member. It goes without saying that reticence to make needed personnel moves is par for the course at NC State.

We can’t yet confirm that Lee Fowler and Tom Stafford were in fact responsible for hiring Mary Easley. Damn it.

I guess writing McQueen about Fowler won’t do any good???? It also gives me some trepidation about Derrick Close being on the BOT while Uncle Erskine runs the UNC show.

The good ole boy network just keeps getting worse in NC politics!

SFN: I am pretty sure that Close rolls off the board in June as well. But, you didn’t need to waste time writing McQueen and Close as they already support ‘our’ position.

Neilsen was dean of the College of Natural Resources while I was a student, and I thought he did a fairly decent job there- but from the faculty and staff I’ve spoken with, he was downright in over his head as a provost. As I read his quotes in the N&O, I just knew he was taking the fall for folks higher up than himself- but that’s how the game is played.

Bowles comments in today’s paper are completely irresponsible. He has no authority over any university’s BOT, only the chancellors. The focus of this thing should be the corruption of Easley and his inner circle, not simply the corruption of NC State.

    Packer In Russia
Thanks to the link to Herzlich. Sobering. Ewing’s caught early has about an 80% cure rate I believe, and hopefully they discovered it in time as if it has spread the rate goes way down.
As one who had a son diagnosed with a similar peds cancer, rhabdo, when he was on his hs football team I know many times these type malignancies aren’t discovered in time. The reason is the young men or women are otherwise in great shape, very muscalar, and the picture of health. Also they are used to aches and pains and often ignore them as part of the game. These cancers are rare, but unfortunately not rare enough. Not to be negative, but his football future is almost certainly over because the chemo’s they will use have big side effects including an almost certain weakening of his heart. But football is not the important thing right now for him.
I’ll say a prayer for him and his family today.

This whole situation stinks to high heaven. Page One in the N&O again today. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been impressed with our Board of Trustees chair…lets hope they elect Burley Mitchell, or another one of the reputable members to replace Twinkletoes Campbell as chair when he steps down next month. The new Board of Trustees member is Jack Cozort, a long time Court of Appeals judge and Jim Hunt lieutenant, and who I’ve heard only good things about. We’ll get a definite upgrade there from Campbell, the pig farmer and truck stop owner.

As for this Erskeen Bowels calling for the BOT member to resign……. how would that affect the “Fire Lee Fowler” train? Anybody still think ole Jed might still be on the way out?

Sorry, guys – this is an important enough topic that we need to stay focused.

We hear good things about the incoming BOT members.

One could view Bowles’ statements in the paper as a shot across the bow at Status Quoblinger. I think he’s in real trouble.

Long-term, having a more capable, proactive chancellor can only be good for NC State, both academically and athletically. But yes, I do have some short term concern about the new shitstorm taking the target off Fowler’s back. And it’s vitally important to be rid of him before September.

It would be great if we could bring Dr. Fox back as she moved some dirt when she was in Raleigh. Dr. Fox stirred up the good ole boy network and some of them had their feelings hurt. The stupid faculty ran her off.

I am worried too that this could hurt some momentum for dumping Fowler. OTOH, the events of the last couple years have convinced me that Fowler was not the biggest problem we have…

However, I do have serious problems with Bowels weighing in here. Trusting him to protect NC State’s best interests is like running into the 7-11, leaving your new car running and having that random shady dude on the corner ‘watch it” until you get back.

There may be some truth to what you are saying but Dr. Fox was looking to leave from the moment she stepped foot on campus. She wanted to be W’s science adviser of some sort as early as 2000, she had applied for jobs with the Texas system and I think with Texas A&M. These are just the jobs that were public knowledge.

Wow, this whole thing really ticks me off even more about Easley! I was one of those stupid suckers that bought the tickets to the Tall Ship deal in Beaufort, almost died of a heat stroke, and never saw a ship outside of the Beaufort docks…all because of Easley and his cronies screwing it up.

May Mike Easley rot in jail with Jim Black! And may there soon be a day that someone finally boots all the corrupt politicians into the middle of the Pamlico Sound! Sorry Fred, don’t want to mess up your fishing grounds though!!
