Directors Cup Update – Wolfpack dead last in ACC

A couple of weeks ago we posted somewhat of an ‘open entry’ to allow the community to discuss some of the chatter that is out there regarding Lee Fowler and the NC State Athletics Department. We have a ton to say about that topic and the reaction to the topic and will most definitely re-address the topic in the coming days, but we thought we would stick to a few items that we have been wanting to get on the blog for a while.

The Director’s Cup has released their April 9th standings…and…guess who (AGAIN) sits dead last at the very bottom of all of the programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference?

Current Directors Cup Standings
(2) UNC-CH
(9) Florida State
(13) Virginia
(17) Maryland
(19) Duke
(33) Wake Forest
(44) Virginia Tech
(48) Miami
(50) Boston College
(64) Clemson
(73) Georgia Tech
(78) NC State

This ranking is unfortunately no surprise for those of us that have followed NC State sports under the Lee Fowler era. Unfortunately, NC State is tracking even worse than last year when Fowler’s Athletics Department finished #53 of the 66 BCS institutions, besting only the following major conference institutions: Iowa State, Vanderbilt (Lee Fowler’s alma mater who does not have an actual Athletics Department), Ole Miss, Boston College, Kansas State, Washington State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Oregon State, South Florida, Mississippi State, Rutgers and Cincinnati.

You should go read this important entry from last year to give yourself some context and knowledge. (I just hope that we can one day get our ‘fuhcilities’ on par with everyone else ahead of us so that we can finally catch-up)

—Lee Fowler Years—-
2008-09 – #78 (current)
2007-08 – #56
2006-07 – #44
2005-06 – #34
2004-05 – #51
2003-04 – #39
2002-03 – #43
2001-02 – #46
2000-01 – #56

—Les Robinson Years—
1999-00 – #40
1998-99 – #63
1997-98 – #43
1996-97 – #57

—Todd Turner Years—
1995-96 – #34
1994-95 – #32
1993-94 – #59

As we stated last year:

NC State finished #56 in the Director’s Cup in “Coach” Lee Fowler’s first year as Athletics Director in 2000-2001 and before he set out on his important ‘seven year facilities plan’ that was proclaimed finished in yesterday’s release of the Athletics Department’s annual report. So, after all of those important facilities that had to be built before we could start holding coaches accountable, the Wolfpack’s program is sitting exactly where it was in Fowler’s first year on the job and worse than the average of State’s finishes under both Les Robinson and Todd Turner’s tenure as ADs at NC State (when our facilities were so bad). (Click here for a detailed comparison of recent ADs at NC State).

For those of you particularly interested in numbers, you will be in heaven with the following links to a special series that we ran last year and hope to update some this year:

    “There was the Frieder firing.”

That worked out pretty well for Michigan didn’t it?

Just to further stoke the fire: I heard today that Fowler is indeed gone. It’s just a matter of time. (In light of the tone of the speaker I interpreted that last bit as meaning not much time.)

Honestly I have no way to personally verify this statement, but this came from an older guy who I respect for his knowledge of the ins and outs of the local sporting world. IN other words, this did not come from one of our contemporary “lunatic fringe”.

    We shall see….

    Go to http://www.gopack.com

They’re advertising the spring game. That’s more than they’ve done in the past.

    ^ BOT meets tomorrow….

I also heard an interesting story about one of his caravan stops that I will share later. Sounds like he’s steady making friends…

Here’s a nugget of information to remember when the topic of fah-cilities comes up: our national champion platform diver had to practice at Dook.

And here’s one for the Directors Cup: in the previous 8 years Fowler has been AD, the worst finish for Carolina (15th), Dook (30th) and UVA (30th) are all higher than State’s best finish (34th).

    ^ BOT meets tomorrow….

Is this a scheduled meeting, or about the new women’s bb coach? Could it also be the end of Fowler???

I’m trying to be patient, I really am. If he’s still the AD at the end of the day on Friday, I’ll really be hating it.

  8. travelwolf 04/14/2009 at 2:34 PM #

my suggestions (and action)… withhold contributions, and Fowler is out the door.

  9. Noah 04/14/2009 at 2:36 PM #

    In the short term.

There was the whole probation thing. My friend isn’t a Michigan grad, so he’s not one to try and spin things. He claims that Fisher wasn’t dirty, he was just incredibly naive about the people who hung around the program.

The next BOT meeting is the regularly scheduled one.

one question i have in all of this. if sid was indeed on his way out with Fowler, why did he offer Josh Davis? Why not leave that scholly for the new coach to pick a player of his choosing? in my mind, Sid believes he will be here and has no intention of leaving for the NBA. Sure, he might go back to Flip if/when he gets fired. but he aint leaving on his own. Although, he probably should just step down and hand the program over to a new coach that is hired before his announcement that he is going back to the NBA.

Obi Wan, I am being patient. But does the force tell you if the Jedi Council already has another AD in mind? Luke

Noah “..same blind loyalty V did…”

Splitting hairs here and seems you got it backwards.

Wouldn’t we want loyality to those that cared, did their jobs well, and tried to improve things?

Isn’t loyalty NOT what we want right now in terms of Fowler? And asking the Board to judge by performace not by loyalty. Lets face it some think LF loyal. Fowler hired TOB, hasn’t left us for another job, and upgraded football/baseball facilities in some people’s view.

  14. Wolf Dog 04/14/2009 at 2:49 PM #

I hear the Board meeting to approve the lady from Western as our new coach.

Don’t know about LF. Did hear be really bad timing to ax him right after he hired a W Bball coach. Plus if TOB likes Fowler you really believe they will cut him loose?

  15. packalum44 04/14/2009 at 2:54 PM #

Tom “Performance Based Organization” O’Brien might like Lee as a person but come on…

  16. Classof89 04/14/2009 at 2:58 PM #

Any incoming AD will undoubtedly be aware of the esteem with which TOB is held by the coaching fraternity, the media, and 90% of the fans, and would be a fool to come in and undermine that relationship. Of course, I say that, and then Kansas was stupid enough to bring in someone who pissed off Roy Williams…

  17. Girlfriend in a Coma 04/14/2009 at 3:04 PM #

My plan: Fire Fowler and let TOB hire the new AD.

  18. packof81 04/14/2009 at 3:20 PM #

“Don’t let anyone fool you, we have more potential than any other instate school.”

We ought to. Heck, there ain’t nowhere to go but up.

  19. Noah 04/14/2009 at 3:34 PM #

Wouldn’t we want loyality to those that cared, did their jobs well, and tried to improve things?

    Sure.

I’m talking about BLIND loyalty. When your emotional feelings are so strong that you are incapable of determining when someone is behaving properly and when they aren’t, you have a problem.

  20. Wolf Dog 04/14/2009 at 3:54 PM #

    Noah

Blind Loyality? “Incapable of determining when someone is behaving properly”

Of maybe just not being cynical and sitting in judgement. You seem to have a real problem with V, but that is your opinion and you certainly don’t miss an opportunity to express it.

I was old enough to live the V years as a student and adult to witness things first hand. I didn’t have to rely on the media version.

I’ve noticed a real difference in the view of V among generational lines of Wolfpack fans. The majority of fans, students, and alum was very pro V during his coaching years and during all the turmoil. After V a small group that appear to be like Noah only got mainstream media versions of V., and that small group seems to be overly negative on his legacy. I guess since they didn’t live it or witness it they will really never know.

  21. GAWolf 04/14/2009 at 3:55 PM #

Blind loyalty… I’ve been talking about that concept since Herb’s 5th year. It certainly applies to wolfpack nation like no other group I’ve seen.

  22. Gene 04/14/2009 at 3:55 PM #

UNC dominates the non revenue sports (soccer, lax, etc.) and as long as Roy is there they are a top 10 or better basketball program year in and year out. We aren’t even close on so many levels. UNC isn’t our rival anymore.

Ain’t that the sad, sad, sad truth 🙁

  23. Wolf Dog 04/14/2009 at 3:57 PM #

Anyone else hearing that the approval for the lady from western is on the board agenda? I think she is a great hire!

  24. Noah 04/14/2009 at 4:03 PM #

After V a small group that appear to be like Noah only got mainstream media versions of V

Yes. That must be it. Clearly, I’m incapable of accepting the truth about Jim Valvano’s angel wings and his ability to heal sick children with a joke and a wink.

    I have seen the light.

Interesting. Seems to be in line with the earlier rumors on here. I’m anxious, but why the wait?
