On the Cheap: NC State’s Athletic Budget vs. the ACC

Sometimes it helps to see things in black and white, spreadsheet style.  From Forbes.com, here’s a listing of ACC school athletic department budgets and the salaries of each Athletic Director:

=================  ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE  =================
---------------------------------------------------------------
Athletic Yrs at No. of Dept. Guaranteed
School Director School Teams Budget Base
---------------------------------------------------------------
Georgia Tech Dan Radakovich 3 17 $56.0M $560,000
Clemson Terry Don Phillips 6 19 $53.2M $418,000
Maryland Deborah Yow 15 27 $61.0M $382,575
Florida State Randy Spetman 1 17 $51.0M $350,000
Virginia Tech Jim Weaver 12 21 $53.5M $345,211
Virginia Craig Littlepage 8 25 $56.2M $320,000
N. Carolina Dick Baddour 12 28 $61.4M $295,000
NC State Lee Fowler 9 23 $39.0M $280,000
---------------------------------------------------------------
ACC Average 8 22 $53.9M $368,848
---------------------------------------------------------------
(apparently private schools Miami, Duke and BC do not report their numbers)

Excluding NC State, each ACC team budgets about $56.04 Million on the average.  NC State, at $39 Million, runs its athletics at a rate of roughly 70% of the rest of the conference.  An easy counter-argument would be that NC State fields fewer teams, but as you can see, there are four schools (GT, Clemson, FSU, VT) that have higher athletic budgets with fewer teams than NC State.

We posted these numbers before, but let’s once again look at the Director’s Cup Standings:

ACC:
4. UNC
5. Wake Forest
9. Maryland
11. UVA
15. FSU
18. Duke
27. BC
63. VT
68. Clemson
91. NC State
93. GT (has a new AD)
94. Miami (has a new AD)

Interesting, and it seems that there is a correllation at least in our case: we’re getting what we pay for.  While it is true that NC State raises far fewer dollars than UNC, it outraises Duke:

With 28 varsity sports, [UNC] is one of the country’s largest athletic programs. It raised $51 million in pledges or donations for athletics last year, alone.Among other ACC schools, North Carolina State University placed 14th on the list, with more than $27 million in donations received last year. Duke placed 17th, with nearly $25.5 million.

Among other ACC schools, North Carolina State University placed 14th on the list, with more than $27 million in donations received last year. Duke placed 17th, with nearly $25.5 million.

Here’s an older table that shows a good picture of ACC booster clubs’ fundraising:

the numbers seem to speak for themselves.

UPDATE 1: Daily Update adds some more numbers

Here are some more numbers.

  • -NC State supporters ranked 9th among BCS programs in annual donations in 2006.
  • -NC State supporters ranked 14th among BCS programs in capital donations the five years prior to 2006.
  • -NC State fans have sold out Carter Finley for 8 consecutive seasons despite the program hitting an almost half century low point in 2006 with a 3-9 record. You have to go all the way back to 1959 (1-9, .100) to find an NC State football team with a worse overall winning percentage.
  • -Actual attendance (not visual estimates like in Chapel Hill) has essentially been at 100% capacity since the 2000 football season. Here are the numbers for 2008.
  • -NC State fans have ranked #7, #17, #20, #19, #16, #13, #17, #18, #16 in basketball attendance since the 2000 season. In 2008, NC State fans averaged 15,043 which was the 2nd highest total in the history of the program despite the team not making the post-season.
  • How happy would NC State fans be if the basketball program had half that number of top 20 finishes?
  • -NC State fans made the Wolfpack Club one of five booster organizations in the country to exceed 20,000 members this year.
  • -In the 2007/2008 athletic year, NC State fans set school records in football tickets sold (37,500), revenue from football tickets sold ($10.75 million), and revenue from basketball tickets sold ($5.6 million).
  • -Additionally, NC State fans donated the second highest total in our history ($25.4 million). This was a combination of an all-time high in annual donations ($10.0 million), the 2nd highest total in capital giving ($13.7 million), and what appears to be an all-time high in endowment giving ($1.8 million).\

UPDATE 2: NC State Basketball Ranked 13th Most Valuable Program

Undoubtedly, the sweetheart deal NC State has with the RBC Center has a lot to do with this ranking, but one can see the disparity between the results on the court (RPI ranking in the 90s) versus the rankings on the ledger sheet for NC State hoops:

Forbes.com

NC State’s basketball program, ranked 13th, is worth $13.6 million. With expenses of only $3.1 million, the lowest of any team on our list, the NC State Wolfpack earned a profit of $7.9 million last season. In his first year with the Wolfpack, former NBA head coach Sidney Lowe led his alma mater to victories over Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest University, marking the first time in four years that NC State beat all three in-state opponents during the same season.

So, a 2008 athletic department budget of $39M equates to an investment of roughly $4.8M per conference victory in football and basketball during the 2008 conference seasons (4-12 basketball, 4-4 football).

I’m no expert, but that seems a little high.

    By the way……

Did anyone notice Sidney Lowe made the front page of ESPN.com on the College basketball page???? The headline says,
“Will teams searching for a coach find a success like Tony Bennett or a struggle like Sidney Lowe? Recent history can show what’s in store for schools on the market. -Doug Gottlieb

Its bad when the only time I can remember Sids picture being on ESPN is an example of a bad hire vs a good hire….

    sorry to be negative………

Not that this has ANYTHING to do with the perfectly apt analogy that was made…BUT — the story of Harry Frazee and the selling of Babe Ruth is a little more complicated than the popular history would lead you to believe.

No No Nanette didn’t come out until 1925, six years after Ruth was sold to the Yankees. Frazee and the commissioner of baseball, Ban Johnson, had a long-standing feud. They both tried to undermine one another repeatedly.

Ruth wanted more money and Frazee couldn’t really afford him. As I recall, Ruth wanted to triple his salary. He basically had to trade him, but the other teams colluded against him. His two offers were from the White Sox (Shoeless Joe Jackson and cash for Ruth) or the Yankees (cash, straight up). This was 1919, so it was after the Black Sox scandal. Ruth for cash was the better offer. The $100,000 basically represented a quarter of the entire value of the Red Sox franchise.

Frazee ended up selling the team for a couple of million a few years later, so it was a good investment for him.

(and now back to your regularly scheduled program…)

BTW, does anyone know how much money we’re currently paying in debt services? We borrowed a rather large stack of cash recently to upgrade C-F, yes?

We’re very close to the point where a fan “movement” (spelled r-e-v-o-l-t) needs to take place. I’m happy with football, and that’s the only thing I give money for — my LTR seats and football tickets.

If a large enough group of fans organized and pledged to stop giving money to NC State until they cleaned house (starting with Lee Fowlup, and including SidLow), I would sign on and let my football seats go. I think it should start with basketball, though. EVERYONE needs to stop buying basketball tickets and LTR seats. If that isn’t enough, the movement needs to include the football-only fans like me.

So where does all the extra money go? The ultimate conspiracy theory: Are we funding UNC’s expenses to whip us regularly?

  8. choppack1 02/10/2009 at 1:20 PM #

Of note, ECU info, whose budget seems so envious of is
    East Carolina 5 19 $24.5M

Good gosh, the man should be fired for making a stink about this alone.

Seriously, what’s the deal – do we operate at a profit or a loss? How does that compare to these other schools? There is a key datapoint missing.

Obviously, we’ve got our donations (27 million for 2006) – but there are other revenues. Shouldn’t there be a “net gain” or “net loss” column.

I mean if we’re breaking even and everyone else is losing money hand over fist, then I can understand that and appreciate it somewhat. If we’re losing the same amount of money as everyone – problem. If we’re making the same amount as everyone else – problem.

^bradleyb123: I am on board for this as well ,football I can see something going on there,a steady improvement,a program,a leader.
We are just being taken for a ride with the basketball program and ole Lee has gots to go and when he does no one in their right mind would have Sid stay.

“Where is all this money that we raise going?”

Did Jed get a new boat recently?

Maybe an addition to the lake house?

A cougar on the side? :O

Some new hideous ties? (If you’ve ever seen him at games, you know what I mean)

Any other ideas? Those are just the most obvious ideas.

  12. Wolf74 02/10/2009 at 1:50 PM #

    Ok guys, a question:

Does the $39 million include the money spent directly by the Wolfpack club in support of renovations and scholarships?

I have, heard – let me repeat HEARD, that NCSU’s accounting is different from other schools because the Wolfpack club is separate from the Athletic Department and the dollars they spend is not counted in the totals and if you include the Wolfpack club expenditures in support of athletics, it would approximate the average of the other schools.

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

  13. Rick 02/10/2009 at 2:28 PM #

“I just like to be on a level playing field with UNC, so that’s why I think it’s very important to us,” Fowler said. “

Now he wants to compete with UNC? On fees? How about you compete on the court.

And it very clear why Fowler keeps his job. He makes money. LTRs will be the death knell for NCSU athletics.

  14. Par Shooter 02/10/2009 at 2:46 PM #

I was going to raise a question similar to that of Wolf74. I know that most (all?) of the renovations at C-F were financed and built by the Wolfpack Club and then given as a completed gift to the athletic dept. As such, the money raised by the WPC to pay down that debt does not even go through the athletic dept at all. I believe this arrangement was unique, even to the point that the loophole we used has been closed within the unc system.

My point is that it’s possible this arrangment skews our athletic dept numbers down if other schools have capital funds flowing through their athletic depts and we do not. I am not nearly knowledgeable enough about the in’s and out’s of these numbers to draw this conclusion but thought I’d throw it out there in case someone else is.

As an aside I don’t think that Purcell and Co. have gotten the credit they deserve for their management and leadership over the C-F project. By all accounts it was very well done and their taking ownership was a big risk on their part. It was that willingness to step up that allowed all of the renovations to get done as quickly and efficiently as they were and we owe Purcell a HUGE debt of gratitude for that leadership.

    Whats the old adage?

You get what you pay for.

No wonder Lee keeps getting contract extensions. He works cheaper than all others and still must be good at getting blood out of the turnip.

  16. ClassOf95 02/10/2009 at 3:37 PM #

I need more information. There should be no “profit” at a public institution and if we operate in the black, where does the extra money go?

As for the Technician article, I too want the best facilities but let’s not forget that NC State was built so the citizens of NC (and others) have the opportunity to get an education. Increasing student fees to support athletics in this economic environment seems to me to be a pretty callous, ignorant proposition.

Has there ever been an interview where the state of our athletic department has been honestly addressed? A sit down with Lee and/or Chancellor Oblinger? To paraphrase President Obama: We need a renewed committment by our leaders for clear, transparent, and effective leadership and accountability.

I believe the student fees issue was brought up in an article this past fall. If I recall correctly, the students were allowed to vote on non-binding recommendations to be given to the fees committee. I’m pretty sure that the athletics fees were rejected by the students but passed by the fees committee, but I may be wrong.

I just remember that Fowler had Kay Yow and others out begging the Student Wolfpack Club to vote for them, and I forget his exact words to stir up support, but I know that they ticked me off enough to mention them in a comment on the earlier post. I don’t recall the name of the post, and I don’t have the time to look for it, but I’m sure someone could find it if so inclined.

  20. Wolfpack_1995 02/10/2009 at 7:57 PM #

Stated over and over but the only reason ole Jed is here is that he does know how to keep the $$$ coming in.

LTRs, RBC contract, ACC profit sharing, and loyal fans that donate make the $$$ keep coming in.

If we could just have Chancellor that gave a damn ala MAF then maybe we could use the $$$ to win some championships.

Maybe the extra $$$ are going to Lake Gaston.

Being an accountant, this is my kind of thread! Few things pop out at me…

All humility aside, I’m startled at how small these figures are. I currently audit one of the more infamous financial companies in the world and have seen accounts 13 digits long. I could run the athletics department with my hands tied behind my back and blindfolded. With that said, I would attempt to double contributions and increase student fees as high as possible (without whining about UNC). This would only happen with wins. We are operating at 70-75% capacity in basketball. Unacceptable!

There is not enough transparency to really analyze the efficiency of the athletics department. We need more figures. We need financial statement but that is all but impossible. I doubt they keep good records of revenue and expenses because they don’t have to. But you guys have me curious now. Maybe I will dig into this some more after busy season! What scares me the most though is that Lee Fowler is the man in charge. Shudder.

  22. mescarlett 02/10/2009 at 10:54 PM #

It is ashamed that some of the most well deserved people in the Athletic Department are getting shunned, as well as the Department in general. I could go on a rant regarding where the school puts too much useless money, but I’ll keep quiet on that for now!

What I want to know is has anyone else noticed that per the jobs’ search on ncsu.edu that the Women’s Basketball Head Coach position has been posted? What on earth is up with this? I am hoping it is just some type of formality. I am a huge supporter of Stephanie Glance and will be very irate if Fowler somehow attempts to roost her from her nest (so to speak) – unless of course she does not want the position, which is hard for me to believe. Anyone have any input on this?

  23. wufpup76 02/10/2009 at 10:59 PM #

^I have no input, but are they obligated to post the position there? I’m unsure …

I’ve been under the impression that Glance would indeed take over full time for Coach Yow (RIP)

“To me, that’s our athletic department in a nutshell w/ one exception. It was obvious why this dufus wanted the money – to fund his true love of “theater” – what in the heck is our athletic department’s motive?”

Pup, it’s not “theatre” here, don’t you remember my old post from awhile back, it’s Oblinger’s love of chamber music. That’s what fuels the burning fire within and sets every fiber of that crazy go lucky kind of a guy ablaze in this out of control zany madcap world that only HE, as head of all things “NC State”, could have ever dared to create.

    Yep, chamber music, shore is.
