Andrew Jones: Russell Wilson Should Drop Football

Columnist Andrew Jones is of the opinion that it is in Freshman All-American QB Russell Wilson’s best interests to drop football and concentrate on baseball exclusively:

He is just 5-foot-10, and with three football injuries on his 2008 resume, focusing just on baseball might be a wise decision for his future. Practice begins in a few weeks, and while Wilson won’t be ready immediately – NCSU officials say it all depends on the early healing process as to when he’ll be ready, so there’s no official time table – he will eventually factor in State’s plans.

A decision to walk away from football will devastate many Wolfpack fans, as the program has struggled to find a competent quarterback since Philip Rivers left in 2003. But it’s probably the best thing for Wilson and his family, and that is what matters most.

I’m sure that there are a lot of fans of other ACC teams that would be completely happy for Russell Wilson to focus exclusively on baseball and not to spend next season giving their favorite team’s defense a fit.  The scenario that Jones discusses has certainly made its way around the rumor mill since the end of the regular season, but no concrete decision and no other items seem to indicate that Wilson plans to hang his football cleats up this spring or anytime soon.  Conventional wisdom is that Wilson enjoys playing both sports; but conventional wisdom also is that Russell is a highly mature and intelligent young man who generally makes fantastic decisions.

One thing is for certain – with a healthy Russell Wilson under center and Mike Glennon developing at a nice pace, the Wolfpack offense is a threat to any team on the schedule. If Wilson does play football next year and remains healthy the Wolfpack has a legitimate shot to compete for an ACC Championship and resulting BCS Bowl berth next year.

Then again, what makes more money- an NFL QB or a Baseball middle infielder?

  2. bradleyb123 01/08/2009 at 4:39 PM #

Wilson would probably have a tough time getting drafted as an NFL QB because of his height (or lack thereof).

    totally OFF TOPIC:

but, Princeton Review/USA Today has released their new BEST VALUE list and NC State came in at #6–not bad!

Well, Wilson will have an impossible time getting drafted for baseball next season…

Soooooooo, let’s play football too and be a REALLY big star in the meantime. Yes?

This dude is a 19yr old super-hero, I simply cannot see him hanging up that cape just yet.

  5. packof81 01/08/2009 at 4:57 PM #

I sure hope Wilson keeps playing football. He’s a fantastic QB. There’s night and day difference with him leading the team.

  6. bradleyb123 01/08/2009 at 5:05 PM #

I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much. I believe he REALLY wants to play both sports. But I’ve heard there ARE conversations going on regarding him dropping football, but I’ve only heard that in these blogs, so who knows what the reality of it is.

I’m just trying to find the silver lining in that dark cloud if that day comes.

He may very well have a shot at the Heisman if he returns, depending on the team’s overall success of course. Would that be enough to assuage any fears he might have about an injury ending his MLB aspirations? I don’t know. Even if he won the Heisman, there’s no guarantee he would get drafted in the NFL.

OK, enough rambling. Please play football, Russell! Baseball sucks anyway — it’s the only sport where some of the players could actually take a nap during the game — WITHOUT impacting the game!

Like I said, a journalist really has no business wading into these waters. He’s making one huge assumption, you’d hope a professional would know better:
*He’s assuming that Wilson’s future in baseball is guaranteed*

Based on his height alone, it IS unlikely that Wilson will get a lot of consideration as QB in the NFL. OTOH, his height isn’t much of a factor for his position in baseball.

But here’s the deal, there are no guarantees right now that he’ll ever get what that contract right now in baseball:
    1) He can get injured playing baseball.
    2) His skills may not improve enough for him to go that high in the draft. And make no doubt about it, the more he plays, the more he’ll have to perform. Right now, any shortcoming in his performance can be written off as, “he’s spending too much time playing football.” If he gives up football, and his skills don’t show significant improvement – suddenly he’s a much less intriguing prospect.

I think any reasonable person on the planet would say that right now, Russell Wilson is a more valuable football player than he is a baseball player.

That may change, but I really question the motives of a writer who recommends that the best QB in the conference, w/ the potential to lead NC State to the ACC championship and a BCS bowl NEXT year, give up the sport to concentrate on baseball – where he didn’t even start last year.

This isn’t to say that Wilson shouldn’t consider all of his options. It’s his life – and he needs to do what he believes is best for him. I just wonder why this writer is making his recommendation public? Does he care a great deal about Russell?

Is this the same Andrew Jones that writes for the Wilmington Star? If so, then yes, he is a UNC alum.

  10. bradleyb123 01/08/2009 at 5:34 PM #

If he’s a UNC alum, it just supports my theory that UNC journalists do their part to try to bring down NC State. I’m not saying they are successful, but I think they do try. I’ve seen far too many articles in the News & Disturber leading up to NC State games (football or basketball) that glorify one or more of the players on the opposing team. They do write the occasional article that is good for State (hey, they HAVE to once in a while!), but I can’t help but wonder if they write articles about how great our opponent is to try to plant any seed of doubt that they can into the minds of our players.

I used to be a subscriber, and it got to be a joke with me. About 2-3 days before games, I’d start watching for these articles. Inevitably, they would come. Not EVERY game, but quite a bit. I even collected them for a while just for kicks.

It got old and I dropped my subscription to that worthless rag.

Bobby Frazier and Tyler Hopsborough should give up basketball because of injuries. Both are supposed to be incredible Olympic Diving stars(maybe that’s “pool jumping” stars. Granted Hopsborough’s injuries were partically becuase of a elbow from a Dookie, but he has lingering ankle issues that might prevent him from winning an Olympic Gold!

  12. whitefang 01/08/2009 at 5:52 PM #

Hansborough may ruin his chances as a professional “listener” if he has many more basketball injuries. And he surely is one of the best listeners on the planet.

Russell gave us an outstanding year, if he wants to give up one, or hell, even both sports… I completely understand and will not think any less of him at the end of the day. He’ll do what he wants to, and that’s ok with me.

  14. redfred2 01/08/2009 at 6:50 PM #

Wow, it’s amazing how some opinions change when just a little success is entered into the picture.

  15. Afterglow 01/08/2009 at 6:56 PM #

I think I heard one of the commentators for the NC STATE/Rutgers game that Wilson had actually thought about playing Basketball as well but that O’Brien said absolutely not. It would be weird (if the aforementioned is true) that he would now entertaining the idea of dropping football. But who knows. Do what you gotta do RW.

  16. Afterglow 01/08/2009 at 6:58 PM #

I think UNC should give up Football.

  17. packalum44 01/08/2009 at 7:14 PM #

Players play, coaches coach, spectators spectate and journalist write dumb stuff.

Fellows, Russell is a player. He plays next year unless they rip his patella out of his skin and he loses his lower leg… I think people forget how pious Russell is. He believes and trust in a higher power. He will not waste his talents because he is scared of his career. He has mentioned he wants to play BOTH sports professionally. The kid is bright enough to make millions without sports.

BTW Noah: More recent injury prone player…TA McClendon.

Andrew Jones is just planting seeds, that’s all. Maybe he’s just like the fans at the other schools around the ACC who would love nothing more than to see Russell Wilson hanging up his FB cletes?

“Giving him the business” is the Head Ref for the “national championship” game!

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Ron Cherry!

  20. Dogbreath 01/08/2009 at 8:31 PM #

    I like Ronnie Cherry, actually.

  21. ILMPACK 01/08/2009 at 8:40 PM #

I live in Wilmington and have ignored his writing in the Star News kiddie paper for years. The News Observer has a bigger sports section than the entire Star News.

  22. highstick 01/08/2009 at 8:40 PM #

I hate Ron Cherry, worst official in football!! My wife is already pissed with me because I screamed when I saw who was officiating!

  23. redfred2 01/08/2009 at 8:43 PM #

Is it possible that Andrew Jones’ grammar is as bad as his choice of topics? What if we’re misinterpreting this whole thing, and Mr Jones’ statement of “Russell Wilson should drop football” is just his poorly worded plea about how our uncanny, smart, and sure handed QB has got to turn it over and should fumble the football at least every once in awhile???

He’s just envious, and I can’t really hold that against him.

  24. redfred2 01/08/2009 at 8:51 PM #

“I think I heard one of the commentators for the NC STATE/Rutgers game that Wilson had actually thought about playing Basketball as well but that O’Brien said absolutely not.”

Um Russell, if somehow you do decide to hang up that helmet, PLEASE do go over and have a visit with Sidney Lowe. I’m almost certain that he’d be willing to sit down and have a chat with you.

  25. buttPACKer 01/08/2009 at 9:00 PM #

Personally, Russell, my suicide will be on YOUR HEAD if you quit football!! I could possibly climb a belltower, as well. Therefore, unless you QB at NC State for at least 2-3 more years, you could end up being a MASS MURDERER!

. . . Now, you don’t want that, do you?
