Wow, only one home game on Raycom this year…

  2. burnbarn 08/06/2008 at 8:35 AM #

we are not finishing with Wake this season!

  3. BJD95 08/06/2008 at 8:35 AM #

Hopefully ESPN and FSN pick up at least 4 of the 6 games not slated for Raycom coverage. Nothing sucks more than an untelevised conference game.

  4. Classof89 08/06/2008 at 8:38 AM #

As last season’s last place team, we are the designated “assume the position” TV opponent, which is why they are showing all of our road games…we will be the opponent of choice for senior days, jersey retirements and commemorations of past championships/teams/coaches…

Sort of like Wake Forest used to be everyone’s Homecoming football opponent…

  5. backinpack 08/06/2008 at 8:59 AM #

Well at least it looks like we will get to watch all of our away games on TV, so those that are lucky enough to make it to home games will be able to see all of them on TV if they are in town.

  6. StateFans 08/06/2008 at 9:01 AM #

Two home games on Raycom. Which is actually good as I read that to mean that many of our other home games will be more national on ESPN, ABC and CBS.

Home game vs UNC-CH which will obviously be a weekend game is a great example. It may be ABC like it was two years ago.

    13-17 record. here we come

  8. pakfanistan 08/06/2008 at 9:46 AM #

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling we’ll finish above .500 this year.

  9. Noah 08/06/2008 at 9:56 AM #

A .500 or above record this year would be a remarkable accomplishment.

  10. StateFans 08/06/2008 at 10:05 AM #

I’ll take anything over .500 and just not even play the season, if possible.

This year is all about watching a team that gives 100% while playing as smart as they can and showing that the coaching staff can teach defense, rebounding and fundamentals.

If we create that foundation this season, then the future truly is bright with the recruiting the staff is putting together.

    ^What StateFans said …

I’m ready to have fun watching a team again … more performances like some of the games from last season will really sour me on Sidney, regardless of how recruiting is going

And yes, anything over .500 would be a good sign (of course, if anyone associated w/ the team is reading this – you should be aiming for .900 or better 🙂 )

  12. BJD95 08/06/2008 at 10:33 AM #

Here’s what I want to see:

    1. Improved perimeter defense (very low bar to clear).
    2. Continued offensive growth from Tracy Smith.
    3. Full-speed Farnold.
    4. Evidence that Mays and/or CJ can be legitimate puzzle pieces for 2009-10.
    5. Simon Harris putting a Tarhole flat on his ass.
    6. At least one significant upset win.
    7. Finishing no lower than 10th in the ACC (UVA and BC should really suck).
    8. Overall record of .500 or better.

  13. packbackr04 08/06/2008 at 10:56 AM #

does anyone know if Quentin is still hooding around the RBC acting like he is working?

Remember that for all of the shortcomings (actual and perceived) of this team, we are by no means the lone team in the conference with question marks. UNC probably doesn’t have (m)any but there are issues for every other team.

BJD- I’d add a #9 to your list– no eggs against sub 150 RPI teams. That was probably the most inexcusable part of last season. Against top 100 competetion, anything can happen– 40-100 there really isn’t that large a degree of separation. If we play like we are supposed to against “crap” teams, that will tell us a lot about what to expect when the conference season starts.

I want to see a basketball staff and squad that plays to its abilities and doesn’t embarrass itself.

That means that no one gets arrested, no one gets sued, no one gives an interview where they suddenly break into song and rap about how their going to get their gun and kill someone, no one wipes their butt with the flag during the national anthem, no one tells 60 minutes that their on their way to geometry class, and no one eats Evander Holyfield’s ear during a blowout.

If we’re a 13-17 squad, it’s just because we’re not that good this year, but we’re playing hard and having fun. I can live with that. It’s the 13-17 squads that sit down and quit that make me want to scream.

Les Robinson’s third (I think) team went 8-19 and 2-14 in the league. They lost to UNC-W to start the year. They got swept by Maryland (the only two conf. wins all year for Maryland). UNC beat us by 50 over in Chapel Hill and could have beaten up by 100 if they wanted to.

But that squad really was an 8-19 squad. Matt Doherty went 8-20 and did it with a team full of top-100 players and high school all-americans.

If we’re bad, I hope it’s because we truly, truly suck.

I don’t think I can take another year of terrible play. The last couple of years have brutal. I’m not going to be happy if we have a sub-500 record, but if we put a good product on the court (fun to watch most of the time), I’ll tolerate it. Last year was just a terrible product on the floor and I can’t take that again.

*This year is all about watching a team that gives 100% while playing as smart as they can and showing that the coaching staff can teach defense, rebounding and fundamentals.*

And this is exactly what I’m looking for.

    I’d only add one thing:
The team should look like they have been prepared for their opponent.

  18. Noah 08/06/2008 at 3:15 PM #

The team should look like they have been prepared for their opponent.

How sad is it that we have to add that as a hope and a goal for this season?

  19. Dr. BadgerPack 08/06/2008 at 3:18 PM #

I also want to see the team consitently put together two halves (in the same game!) of well-played basketball.

It does no good to execute a flawless game for 20 minutes– pick your 20– and poop the sheets for the other 20 minutes.

  20. paul 08/06/2008 at 3:22 PM #

I posted this on statefans.com but i’ll put it here as well.

The following games will be split-signal games:

    Saturday, Jan. 10
    Georgia Tech @ Maryland, noon
    N.C. State @ Clemson, noon

    Saturday, Jan. 17
Georgia Tech @ NC State, noon
    Maryland @ Florida State, noon

    Tuesday, Jan. 20
    N.C. State @ Duke, 8
    Virginia @ Maryland, 8

    Wednesday, Feb. 18
    N.C. State @ UNC, 8
    Virginia Tech @ Virginia, 8

    Thursday, Feb. 26
    N.C. State @ Wake Forest, 8
    Miami @ Virginia, 8

    Saturday, March 7
    N.C. State @ Miami, noon
Georgia Tech @ Boston College, noon

So of the eight games that State will play on Raycom this year, six of them will be split-signal games. This means that if you live north of Richmond or south of Clemson that you’ll be getting the “other” game unless you go to a sports bar, sign up for ESPN Full Court (assuming ESPN Full court decides to pick these games up), or get a satellite dish and “move” to Raleigh, Greensboro, or Charlotte.

By way of comparison, the number of split-signal games for UNC and Duke is both one (their respective home games against NC State).

call me an optimist, but i am much more optimistic than anyone up here. if most fans truly believe last year was an anomaly, then we should be good this year. yeah, i said it. this is virtually the same squad that was predicted to go #3 last year minus Grant who was never really good (couldn’t shoot, handle, drive, dribble, turnovers, better at putting things into teammate’s girlfriend’s hole than putting ball in the hole, etc…)

this hinges on the anomaly idea…fells, costner, mccauley being as good as we thought they’d be last year. if so, take those three add top-50 recruit tracy smith and degand and we can finish behind clemson, wake, duke, unc without it being a surprise

  22. Rochester 08/07/2008 at 7:16 AM #

I’d buy the anomaly theory if our conference losses had been close heartbreakers that could have gone either way. But in the school-record tying 9-game losing streak, only the Duke game was close. The others were “drop the pants and bend over” games. The anomaly was that our coaching totally sucked and most of our players didn’t care.

Of course, the third definition in Merriam-Webster’s for anomaly is “something different, abnormal, peculiar, or not easily classified.” Last year was tough to classify, so by that definition it was definitely an anomaly.

  23. BJD95 08/07/2008 at 8:08 AM #

    The key things to remember:

    1) Every non-UNC team has serious question marks.
    2) BC and UVA have even worse roster situations than the Pack.

Thus, relatively small improvements could send the Pack back up to mediocrity this season. This is not going to be a hard league to make it to 6-10, at least. That means 6-8 against opponents other than UNC. Very doable.

  24. Noah 08/07/2008 at 8:38 AM #

The last time an NC State basketball squad lived up to its expectations was when Les Robinson was the coach and it was the wrong sort of expectations.
