Carolina Panthers/NFL Pre-Season Thread

Like a long-lost friend, football is back! The Panthers open their pre-season slate tonight, and many questions abound. Can our old friend Muhsin Muhammad fill the black hole that has been #2 WR ever since…Moose left the first time? Is Dwayne Jarrett a complete bust? Is Jeff Otah the last puzzle piece for the OL, or is he just an overrated stiff? Will Julius Peppers be Julius Peppers again? Can Godfrey fill a glaring void at safety? He sure as hell better, after the Panthers passed on DaJuan Morgan in the 3rd round to take him.

Personally, I would have drafted Vandy’s Chris Williams at 13, passed on Stewart (fragile and unnecessary), and not made the trade with Philly. That said, Williams hurt his back in camp and might land on IR – so good thing the Panthers didn’t go that route. And I doubt Fox and Hurley really care too much about next year’s first round pick, since they’ll be job hunting if the Panthers don’t make the playoffs this year.

Round 2 of Steve Smith’s Punch-Out!! resulted in a team-imposed 2 game suspension. Memo to Smith – when you are 5’10” and 175 pounds in the NFL, it’s probably not a good idea to go around sucker punching people. So, it will be hard to get a read on the passing game early on. But I do expect a very strong performance from Jake Delhomme.

In other QB news, thank God Carolina didn’t bid on marginal QB/drama queen extraordinaire Brett Favre. The collective ass-kissing when the Pats and Jets play this year will be too much for any thinking person to bear. Let’s be even more thankful for the graceful departures of John Elway and Dan Marino – each of whom was twice the QB Favre is (but only 10% the QB that Favre thinks he is).

I am split in my allegiances, as I remain loyal to my pre-Panther era favorite team, the Denver Broncos. When they play (every four years), it has been clear which team “needed” the win more, and that’s who I cheered for. I narrowly avoided a tough call a few years ago, when each team made the conference finals.

Playoff Picks

NFC: Carolina, Green Bay, Arizona, Dallas, Philadelphia*, Minnesota*
AFC: San Diego, Jacksonville, New England, Pittsburgh, Denver*, Indianapolis*
Super Bowl: New England over Green Bay

* = wildcard

Post your thoughts on the Panthers, your own favorite team, and/or the NFL in general.

There is no debate who the greatest non-center in the history of basketball is. It’s Jordan. If you think it’s anyone else, you’re wrong. Sorry.

There is no debate on who the greatest hitter in baseball was. It’s Teddy Effing Ballgame.

But I think we can probably argue over who the greatest QB was for the rest of our lives.

I never saw Unitas play, so I can’t judge him.

In my view, I list the elite QBs as such:

    1) John Elway
    2) Dan Marino
    3) Joe Montana

I think you can make a plausible argument for any of those 3 as being the best. But nobody else, at least from the modern era.

Favre was tracking that way for the first half of his career, but not during the second. He never learned to quit being reckless with the ball, and really hurt his team that way on numerous occasions. He also had multiple seasons where he was plain awful. Elway and Marino QB’d some pretty bad teams to at least solid seasons. When Favre’s roster was down, he did not do the same.

I put Elway ahead of Marino even before getting the rings – because he repeatedly took shitty teams to the AFC title game and the Super Bowl. Marino repeatedly lost in the first round. Elway’s best RB prior to the Terrell Davis years (at the very end of his career) was Sammy f-ing Winder. Elway also never had (IIRC) a Pro Bowl WR. Given a good running game and an average defense in his final 2 seasons, Elway finally got his rings. It is a shame that we never got to see Marino get that chance.

Joe Willie with a good set of knees may have been different! I still gotta give him credit for “winning me a few bucks” from a bunch of diehard Colt fans in the Super Bowl that year.

Can’t believe you guys are leaving Eddie LeBaron off of the all time great QB list? LOL!

Noah- People still try to argue greatest hitter all the time. Not that they’re right.

With no WWII or Korea, Williams probably gets around 800 homers… and tacks another 5-10 points on his career average. Just sick.

Best right handed hitter has a bit more room for debate, but Dimaggio is right in there. Two of the best pure hitters ever, same era, same vicinity. If there was ESPN back then, the coverage Yankees/Red Sox get now would seem like nothing.

Favre still got his team to the playoffs a bunch– in down years. 2005 and 2006 were pretty bad; the whole roster was pretty much crap. But aside from that, they won. We’ll see how he does in NY. System guy (west coast), or QB? If he puts that Jets team in the playoffs, that could sway a few folks to the DBP side of the force…

BJD- Rod Smith perhaps as a probowl receiver for Elway?? I know he didn’t have one early on.

When I think of Elway’s receivers, I immediately think of “The Three Amigos,” although none ever went to a Pro Bowl. Good link:

Go to the Pro Football Reference site and look at Namath’s numbers. Then go look at Ken O’Brien’s numbers. Then come back here and tell me about how Namath’s numbers are better.

Best right-handed hitter of all time…yeah, probably Dimaggio. Maybe Jimmy Foxx.

Joe Willie’s major contribution to football wasn’t his personal stats. It was “the win” that changed the face of NFL football versus the AFL forever.

Jets beat the Colts in Super Bowl,
Mets beat the Orioles in the World Series,
and the Knicks knock out the Bullet’s in the NBA playoffs!
All in a 12 month period!

I sure did love taking money from “Balmer” fans!

Namath had little or nothing to do with the Jets winning that Super Bowl. He threw for about 200 yards and no touchdowns. Matt Snell was the big star for the Jets. He had 121 yards, scored the only touchdown for the Jets and was the big factor in grinding down the clock.

Namath’s greatest NFL moment came during a press conference.

Actually, his biggest contribution was taking Sonny Werblin’s signing bonus and NOT signing with the Cardinals.

And who handed him the ball, Noah! Dang, he guaranteed the win! That’s all he had to do! Doesn’t matter how, just that he did it!! I’d say he was very talented in handing the ball to Snell!

17-28, no touchdowns, but was the MVP! Sorry, you didn’t get to vote!

You must have bet on Baltimore!
