The Larry Brown Final Four

“This is a nightmare for Roy Williams” — Billy Packer, 9:31 remaining in the first half with the score Kansas 33 UNC 10

“This game…is OVER” — Billy Packer, 7:31 remaining in the first half with the score Kansas 38 UNC 12

It would take a blind person less than a nanosecond to recognize the enormous difference in quality between the N&O’s fantastic ACC Now blog and the college basketball blog of the Charlotte Observer. Therefore, typically don’t link to the Charlotte Observer’s “Above The Rim” blog because…well…it’s pretty bad and rarely offers us any value.

But, every now and then we can get surprised. Today the Charlotte Observer originated an interesting set of observations that we will share as a part of our Final Four open entry when David Scott (no surprise that it wasn’t Ken Tysiac) blogged the following:

Larry Brown sure attracted a lot of attention at the Alamodome on Friday. But there was good reason. Brown’s influence has been huge on each of the four programs at the Final Four:

— He played and was an assistant at North Carolina.

— He was coach at UCLA from 1979-81.

— He was coach at Kansas from 1983-88 and took the Jayhawks to the NCAA title in 1988.

— Memphis coach John Calipari was a Brown assistant at Kansas and with the Philadelphia 76ers.

How can we connect Larry Brown to NC State? Take a look back to this coaching search de-brief from two years ago to educate yourself.

Update 5:30pm – Maybe I spoke just a moment too soon by giving the Charlotte Observer some credit for their comments. Click here to see how the New York Times was all over the Larry Brown-angle with significant more quality and quantity. Check out this neat graphic.

Lastly, we would be SFN if we didn’t remind you of the following:

Does everyone get the black bar/correction option now, or was that put in there especially for the non-typing, illiterates, like myself?

wolfpack n da house-I’ve kind of sensed John Wall will go there (Memphis) all along. If by chance, Derrick Rose stays one more year (which is unlikely) then maybe Wall has a chance of coming here. Wall’s is intent on going to the NBA and I don’t think he needs to look any further than Derrick Rose. I think our chances of getting Wall are slim to none; although I would love to be wrong on that. On the upside, I believe JJ will be back. On the downside, if kids can’t use State as a platform to show off their talents to NBA scouts than the likelihood of getting top tier players dwindles for us.

I dunno about this railing on Larry Brown. The nature of coaching is such that if you don’t win you can be fired at any moment, despite prior success. It’s a cut-throat business. If he wants to try and make as much money as he can and take on new projects, while his earning ability is peaking, then I don’t see the problem with that. One day you’re up and making 800k, the next day you’re down and out of work for a few years and lucky to get 100k at a small school; general e.g. not particular to the prior example: Quinn Snyder, Bobby Cremins, Dave Odom, etc. This happens as a natural course in other industries all the time, and those professionals don’t get chastised for the same behavior.

“Oh how dare you Larry Brown, for trying to maximize your earning potential!”

Clearly you folks are not the only ones holding this position though, as he has been clearly black-listed by the respective leagues, and is having trouble landing in another coaching slot.

redfred, i got the blackbar too, im using IE7, haven’t tried it with Firefox.

Ok, time to clean up my desk.

afterglow, nice analysis, although i think that ANY school can be used as a showcase of your talents. Every year the “directional schools” (an awesome bit of jargon coined by none other than JimmyV) put a fair number of people in the NFL and NBA. The difference though is that if you can do it consistently in the ACC, you are probably legitimate. I saw JJ make moves this year around the basket that I have NEVER seen a post player make and ive watched and played bball for a longgg time.

^smiley, all those so-called “knowledgeable” sports people were giving the holes the benefit of the doubt due to the reputation of the ACC. People like Stuart Scott who aren’t influenced by the media or personal feelings at all. The ACC was very down this year and it finally got reflected when unx, as a #1 seed, had to play a REAL team. Louisville doesn’t count as they were at best a top 20 team- at times.

As far as my opinion, I’m on STATE FANS NATION, I’m 100% ABC and that’s as factual as it can be.

    Amen, Pack 92

I like Larry Brown. He’s probably one of the five best college coaches of his era. After Calipari and Barnes, there’s nobody I would have rather taken our job two years ago. If he was younger, he would have been #1 on my list.

Even after he screwed us over, I still wish Calipari was here. The man can really coach.

  9. Afterglow 04/06/2008 at 1:22 PM #

Ismael-I hope John sees it that way. But that perception is of the wise and as we may see the writing on the wall, I do not believe John does. I think Clamidipari will be able to swoon the likes of John Wall his way. Again, I will be very happy if he comes to State and I am proven wrong.

In some respects I can see how the ACC has consistently been a showcase of NBA talent. The problem is the “what have you done for me lately” syndrome at State. There are a bevy of schools in the ACC to choose from and if you as a player are practicing due diligence, you will probably choose someone other than the Pack at this point. JJ Hickson had only Lowe’s word and the fact that Lowe has coached in the NBA. But if Lowe doesn’t start showing that his word actually means something then our production (or lack there of) in the ACC will have a definite effect on if we get top tier players. This next year I think will be telling.

Oh yeah, and I too am getting the black line and think it’s either global warming or innocuous.

SFN: If they were #1 all year…and failed to even advance to the National Championship game…I’d say that there is definitely a factual case to be made that they were obviously over-rated. OBVIOUSLY they are NOT #1. Therefore, they were over-rated.

The poster said, “THE most overrated team in college basketball”. So SFN your “factual” observation means they were over rated by 3 spots at most and all other rankings were more accurate, thou pack92 disagrees w/ you. Too much on blogs is all or nothing, so much hyperbole. My point was, UNC had a wonderful season, one all of us would welcome for next year for any team we pull for. UNC learned they are not the #1 team this year. But 36-3, ACC, Final 4 will always be a special year, even by their standards, for UNC or any other team. (I tried not to respond to this, but I feel argumentative today, as you also must by your technical, but incomplete, challenge.)

I talked with a member of the A.D. at the smaller school my son will be playing football at this fall,he said they went over to State to talk with athletic department about fund raising for their school. He was told -I quote”WE JUST OPEN THE LETTERS AND PUT THE MONEY IN THE BANK”.This he said was their attitude toward their fans and alumni.
Yes-Lee was there-at that meeting and didn’t say a word against the statement. We had a long talk afterward about the leadership at NCSU(He was a grad.student from state in the 90’s)I don’t want our ineptitude to effect other schools, especially the school my son will be attending. The bullshit is unbelievable-makes you ashame to be a State graduate.Welcome to all that is N.C.STATE now.

I think Bill Self may have coached w/ Larry Brown too.

Regarding the games last night, athleticism beat perceived higher b’ball IQ. I was more surprised by what happened to UNC than what happened to UCLA.

Memphis has looked dynamite since the Sweet 16 – and they had a magnificent performance last night. Their guards were way too much for UCLA’s slow-footed team. Collison couldn’t handle the Tigers guards and they couldn’t work it into love. Dorsey had a classic game – 0 points, 15 rebounds. Taggert was a surprise – hitting a three and keeping UCLA’s big guys off-balance.

Kansas was amazing the first 15 minutes of the game. They actually exposed UNC-Ch’s lack of overall speed outside of the 1 and Ginyard on D. Their D was amazing – but I can’t say that this surprised me. I was extremely impressed w/ how well they defended Davidson on that critical possession – and for the most part – they defended the Heels like this.

Should be a great exciting game, I’m looking forward to it.

  13. turfpack 04/06/2008 at 4:27 PM #

The best team is memphis, but I will be pulling for Kansas -just can’t pull for thugs & slezzeball.
Just how weak will the ACC be next year?
Very top heavy next year- I think.
Next Year-N.C.STATE-Don’t have a clue and neither does anyone else.

Just going by what has happened the majority of this tournament, I can see a blowout tomorrow night. Couldn’t tell you who it is going to be, but just judging what has happened so often in this downer of a tourney. I mean all four #1s make the final four for the first time in history, and we get two blowouts. Go figure.

The black line is awesome. We can click on it while it is there and edit our typos before they are set in cyber concrete. Thanks SFN.

Fred — the first time I got it I thought SFN had me in posting purgatory. But thanks SFN for continuously improving your Blog site.

  16. Pack92 04/06/2008 at 7:01 PM #

OOHHH, smiley, you really put us in our place. Your conjecture that unx is NOT overrated is just as much opinion as mine that they are. Would it have pleased you if I said they were the most overrated team in the ACC? In our area? How about in NC? Nobody will argue wins and losses with you but unx feasted on a weak ACC and who did they beat OOC? Nobody I can think of in the current top 10.

On a lighter note, I heard today the Rick Barnes WAS ready to jump ship to Raleigh 2 years ago but foul-up did not give him a concrete offer. Any insight on that SFN?

  17. turfpack 04/06/2008 at 8:54 PM #

Pack92-(I’d say on a darker note) I heard the same thing-He took to long to get back to Barnes and Texas came back with a nicer offer for him.As usual LEE screwed around missed out.
I have been a coach a long time in H.S.-The inside coaching knowleadge is NCSU has always been Rick’s dream job-His friends and family has said as much- now we want ever know -Of course LEE found away to screw that up as well!!

We all knew that this game was over at 40-12. You have to show up and play hard, defense and have intesnity. opps, i thought it was nc state and kansas not unx lolll.
Maybe roy and his unx fols felt duggum mad that they were not given the ncaa title this year. I know somewhere matt d is laughing!!
Three things that showed up in this game:
1.unx did not play defense and thought it would outscore folks
2.tyler h is not talented enough to play against better athletes.
3.roy williams is very overrated as a coach! where were the timeouts? Did he make any changes or coaching moves at all?

Finally, i have to pull for kansas rather than memphis and those crimminals at lee f old school! If memphis wins they will be the first school to return their trophy prior to the start of their victory parade due to recruiting violations and payments to players.
Olde john c! Olde larry b! Olde roy dagumm williams!
Man, even sidney lowe knows the ncaa rules and regulation book better than these guys!
    I think?

Somebody dig up Paul Harvey and tell me the rest of the story as to why Hansborough was a 20 year-old freshman, please.
