Larry Davis to Transfer from Seton Hall

It’s not a big deal, but it was worth noting that it was announced yesterday that Larry Davis will transfer from Seton Hall.

Davis played in all 61 Seton Hall games over the last two seasons and averaged 6.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for his career. The guard’s top performance came in a 94-85 victory over Penn during his freshman season when he recorded his only double-double with career-highs of 27 points and 10 rebounds. Last season, Davis made 13 starts and averaged 5.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per game.

You will remember that Davis, a combo-guard from New York, originally signed a letter of intent to play for NC State under Herb Sendek. After Sendek left NC State and when Seton Hall hired Bobby Gonzalez, the Pirates used the window of time before NC State hired Sidney Lowe to find ways around NCAA rules to connect to Davis. Almost simultaneously with the Wolfpack’s hiring of Sidney Lowe, NC State’s athletics department granted Davis and fellow commitment Dan Werner free releases from their binding LOIs.

What we didn’t share with you at the time was the scoop on how Lee Fowler was handling our three committed and signed recruits – Larry Davis, Dan Werner and Dennis Horner – during his embarassing coaching search. You see, during the month long search process when these recruits were reading tons of negative stories about Lee Fowler’s failures in the press…”Coach” Fowler’s communication with the recruits and their families was extremely limited. In other words, it barely existed.

After all of the dust settled, some people close to the situation informed SFN that the recruits’ families were very disappointed with the manner in which the transition was executed and that Lee Fowler and NC State had almost no communication with the families for the entire month of April. (We heard a rumor that Fowler spoke to the families one time – right after Sendek left – and never reached out to the families again. We do not have verification of this.)

Of course, this doesn’t surprise us – as we shared back then, Fowler wasn’t even calling the coaches that he was trying to hire in attempts to build relationships and sell what NC State had to offer. If he wasn’t calling the coaches that he was trying to hire then he sure as hell wasn’t going to interrupt his Lake time by bothering with the recruits. You know how it goes…this stuff just works itself out. There is no reason for anyone to think strategically and spend time executing on a transition plan.

When it became known that Davis was not going to play for the Wolfpack we logged this entry that will be of interest to you. In the entry we discuss our thoughts on the general practice of being so passive and conciliatory with scholarship releases during a key time in NC State’s Basketball program.

Let’s assume for a moment that you work in the real world and own a company that is your livelihood.

One of your account officers makes a key sale for the company. In the sale the new client signs a contract committing the client to provide certain services for the next four years. You are restricted by law to having less than fifteen clients at any one time, so the commitment of the new client is very important.

After the new sale is signed, sealed and delivered and you have begun making arrangements and planning around the new client, the account officer who signed the deal accepts leaves your company to accept a new job with a competitor.

The new client, who signed his/her contract with YOUR COMPANY – not the account officer – suddenly claims that they are uneasy with their agreement and would like to take their business elsewhere.

Question: As a prudent manager of your business, do you allow the new client to freely ignore his commitment and simply waltz into the horizon without exercising any of the penalty clauses availability to you in the signed contract?

Had Lee Fowler and NC State not handled the Davis (and Dan Werner) situation in our typical lazy, non-confrontational, passive manner then Davis very easily would have been suiting up for NC State’s over last two years.

Though Davis has not excelled at Seton Hall, he has not been a total bust. With this said, Davis would have been on the roster last year when Engin Atsur was injured and would certainly have executed the point guard position with more success than Gavin Grant. Had NC State had a point guard throughout last season the Wolfpack may have won a couple of more games which may have produced bubble scenario for an NCAA Tournament berth.

One thing we do know for certain – Larry Davis is better than Marques Johnson. Had Davis been on the roster last season, the Wolfpack would have been significantly more hesitant to accept a transfer from a similar combo guard in Marques Johnson…and if Davis was excelling under our system one could also speculate that Javi Gonzalez may not have gotten an offer. This would have freed-up two valuable scholarships for Coach Lowe to have used during last year’s recruiting cycle to have allowed him to capitalize on the positive buzz and late season success of his first year.

In the end, no one still knows if Larry Davis would have been a good fit at NC State. As you will see in this entry, bridges got burned pretty quickly in the process. Which, of course, opens a whole new perspective into the ‘reasoning’ why NC State would be so conciliatory in a situation where we were being publically ridiculed despite our excessive support of the whims of an 18 year old who was unethically contacted by the program he attended only because of our generous release.

on00_proof ^^^ calling up our current SBP and recommending something? HAH! From what I have noticed and heard from people inside Student Gov’t and the actions I have personally seen him take… he has ZERO interest in doing anything that doesn’t involve building his resume…

He is pure butt kisser all the way… You figure a SBP would fight for students against the likes of good ole’ Stafford… Stafford loves the kid, as do Oblinger and Fowler… He is practically a ‘yes’ man. (Those I know inside student government which included 3 kids running for SBP next year were practically running with an “anybody but Bobby” mentality)

During the Campout fiasco he told the chancellor that he had warned that there wouldn’t be enough tickets and it the number should be split, but that nobody would listen to him. After it was determined that all the tix would go to campout he comes out covering up saying that the plan he mentioned was for future years… I don’t have the quotes handy, but they were definitely not for that purpose.

During play at basketball games he continuously walked around and politicked, completely oblivious to what was going on on the court. He has introduced himself to me about 5 times and still doesn’t know who I am, despite the fact we are both in the Student WPC and see each other quite often.

Sorry SFN for the slightly off-topic rant, but I just feel that the leadership from top(BOT) to bottom(SBP) sucks out loud. And it is infuriating.

In other news, I had not made it back to the stories about being let out of their LOI’s. I knew they had been, but didn’t know the nitty gritty. Absolutely disgusting about Fowler not contacting them.

Oh, so Larry Davis really DOES want to play for NC State afterall?

Must’ve been that he was afraid that any new coaching hire was going to demand more out of him than he knew ” ” ever would have.

Way to go Sidney, you really proved that kid wrong. He’s back!

This kid Davis must just naturally gravitate towards high profile/low expectation scenarios.

Sorry to be such a smart a*s, and I do still hold hope that Sidney Lowe is the person that I thought he was, but after this past season I’m just not going to hold anything back until he proves it to me.

with the way our team has played and the way our recruiting schollies have been handled i’m starting to think Larry’s high school coach might have not been such a crazy asshole…

and it doesn’t surprise me at all that Lee screwed up anything that he had his hands on…

There have been rumors that Seton Hall’s thinking of replacing Gonzalez, but so far the powers that be at Seton Hall say it’s not something they are considering. Maybe Davis wanted to be ahead of the curve, if Gonzalez gets canned after next year and not be stuck in a transition year as a senior.

I believe that Les Robinson kept in regular contact with Rivers during the football search.

I believe Les also stayed in touch with Gainey and Thornton, after he resigned as basketball coach and before Sendek was hired, to make sure they were comfortable keeping their commitment to NCSU.

    LF won’t fire himself.
    WHO is in charge?

  9. Wulfpack 04/09/2008 at 6:58 PM #

^The same people who blow smoke up his ass everyday for raising the money. Get over it guys, LF is here to stay unless he goes on his own accord — sound familiar???

Lee Fowler doesn’t care about NC State athletics as George Bush doesn’t care about black people.

Nothing surprises me any more about Lee Foulup, his inconpetence as a A.D.is already legendary in N.C.STATEDOM.It’s at the point I don’t know what to say anymore about him that hasn’t already be said.
I have e-mailed and called people at the university about his uselessness-with very little meaningful response from anyone.I have talked with a few of big money guys-some are- pissed want change
some are -like let’s see what happens-some are -like everything will be okay.I am not the type to give up – but it’s wearing me down to the point that I don’t know if anyone really cares.(TOB please save us this fall.)

What I did mean was that it is time to put a cap on recruiting “awful” and “mediocre” guards. We have our quota and thank god davis did not come here!
Tell me what our leader Sid is doing to make us better next year?
was being kind guards we have are awful.

  13. packbackr04 04/10/2008 at 9:46 AM #

    KYjelly^^

i agree, we have enough shitty guards on the team. hopefully some of them will pack up their $hit and transfer. i so desperately want to get some fresh faces who care out on the court.

  14. blackdom 04/10/2008 at 9:53 AM #

^packbackr04 I second that what KY said, but if Sid is recruiting anyone it is the same type player, middle of the road guard? What gives?
Can someone in that way too big staff of Sids or Sid himself get over to europe and bring back some solid ,fundamental players.
I have seen Seton Hall play on numerous times and davis sucks too be kind.

  15. PurplePeopleEaters 04/10/2008 at 10:26 AM #

Speaking of Fowler, I got to sneak a peak at the memo that expressed the full confidence in Lee Fowler from the faculty senate meeting a few days ago. A lot of their points made little to no sense regarding athletic success. It was almost like it was saying, hey we don’t need to succeed, It’s good enough that our athletes are trying. It was sickening.

  16. packgrad93 04/10/2008 at 10:58 AM #

“but if Sid is recruiting anyone it is the same type player, middle of the road guard? What gives?”

Wall 7 Brown aren’t “middle of the road” guards.

“Can someone in that way too big staff of Sids or Sid himself get over to europe and bring back some solid ,fundamental players.”

I thought that what we were foing, but everyone hated it? Needed more athletes.

  17. Ed89 04/10/2008 at 11:17 AM #

I think we’ll see that both Johnny Thomas and C.J. Willliams are very athletic guys that will be able to play both the 2 and 3 position. One thing that I noticed from Sidney’s last TV show was that when the topic came up about next year’s players and replacing Gavin, Dennis Horner’s name never came up. He mentioned Courtney possibly playing the 3 and mentioned Thomas and Williams, but no Dennis. As far as Euro-style players, I think Wood will fit the bill. Brown and Wall will be the athletes, and NO, they aren’t middle of the road. We still need a PF/C for 2009, and other than Favors, none are listed on Scout. If we land Wall, Favors, and Brown, we are definitely top 5, but probably the Top recruiting class of 2009. Just something to think about before we bash Sid to death — we still “could” be in the hunt for the top class in 2009, and with our returning guys, we’d be a force — with all of Sid’s guys!!

  18. travelwolf 04/10/2008 at 11:18 AM #

SFN, Do you remember what his mother said about Lowe? I’m not saying she was correct (jury is still out for a year for me), but she maybe had a point about Lowe’s inexperience. Of course, it sure seems like Davis made a bone-head move in transferring to Seton Hall – he was needed here.

  19. thekind 04/10/2008 at 11:34 AM #

    Fowler,
    You are a clown!

  20. kyjelly 04/10/2008 at 12:03 PM #

Ed89: 09? “We will need a pf/c in 09″?”We will be a force in 09”. We were not talking about guards from the heartland or Indiana.I beleive it was big ,smart ,fundementally sound Europeans ,not Indiana.
You have a pt guard that shoots 32% from the floor,23% from 3pt avgs 1.3 asst a gm and shoots 64% from the free throw line and does not make anyone on the team better,we need a whole lot more for sure and we have brown and wall are you going to deliver them?
Listen fowler is a clown etc ,etc but using him to get Sid of the hook is wrong.
Hell Skip Posner passed away for gods sake and Wake has the best recruiting class in the country coming in…give me a break and you keep watching Sids tv show and read between the lines. And when you talk to him again remind him we do not get draftpicks for finishing dead last.

  21. packbackr04 04/10/2008 at 12:10 PM #

so is horner transferring. i know there was a rumor of that a few weeks ago.

  22. 66pack 04/10/2008 at 12:49 PM #

for someone to transfer from ncsu requires a place to go.where to go to?

  23. Ed89 04/10/2008 at 1:06 PM #

Ky, I’ll be sure to remind Sid about the draft picks. Horner could go alot of places – alot of mid-majors would love him – possibly a big school like Michigan (with Beilein). I have no idea if he’s transferring. Personally, I hope he doesn’t. I still like him as he’s the only guy who stuck to his LOI.

  24. Trip 04/10/2008 at 1:15 PM #

You don’t have to have somewhere to go to say you’re transferring. Just ask Taylor King… he left duke with no school ready to take him, just saying that he had a few on his mind. I don’t think Horner is leaving anymore, as I’m sure something would have been said by now. I just don’t know what spot he would have on the team next year if Fells moves to the 3 spot.

  25. Wulfpack 04/10/2008 at 1:27 PM #

“Hell Skip Posner passed away for gods sake and Wake has the best recruiting class in the country coming in”

I might be mistaken but I think Skip had a hole hell of a lot to do with recruiting that class.
