A HORRIBLY officiated basketball game and the Wolfpack’s achilles heel of poor rebounding and free throw shooting was almost too much for Coach Lowe’s troops to overcome. But in the end, Gavin Grant‘s 2 (of 3) free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining lifted NC State to the Old Spice Classic Tournament Championship.

* Farnold Degand hit one of two free throws with 20.8 seconds remaining in the game to give the Wolfpack a 67-66 advantage before Villanova took the lead with a rebound and follow-up with 2.2 seconds remaining.

* Winning this tournament is going to be huge for State in March; it is particularly gratifying to ‘get back’ the UNO loss from last week. Now we have to hope that UNO, Rider, USC and Villanova all have fantastic seasons. Before the season, I pegged our record to be 4-1 right now. Of course I would have never predicted how we got to this 4-1, but in hindsight I think that this is the best 4-1 that we could have been.

* It only took the ESPN announcing crew until the last minute of the game to FINALLY highlight one of the bad calls against State. Fran Fraschilla commentated the entire game from the Villanova perspective and Len Elmore…well, Len Elmore can bite me.

* State just won two close games in a row by one possession. What an amazing change from the trend prior to Coach Lowe’s arrival in Raleigh.

* The ACC had a little stumble about a week ago, but since then the conference has really succeeded and seems to be out performing what some people expected heading into the year. The ACC is a combined 51-10 after play on Sunday.

* Coach Lowe has stated that we will have different players step up for us at different times this season and tonight was no exception. Ben McCauley played great in the first half and shooting guard, Courtney Fells was clearly the player of the game scoring 21 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field including 4 of 6 from the three point line.

* State shot a fantastic 46.7% from the three point line. If the Wolfpack can just shoot at a 35%+ clip from behind the arc (and shoot 70% or better from the free throw line) then we will win a lot of basketball games this year.

* Any “old schoolers” out there remember Walker Lambiotte nailing two free throws with no time remaining on the clock to lift the Wolfpack to a win in an early season tournament in the mid 1980s?

* One of the things that I love the most about the internet is that forums exist for others to help validate my own opinion. I thought that the officiating and announcning tonight were both very, very challenging. So, you can understand how much I loved checking in on some of the message boards and seeing an inordinate amount of fans making similar comments. On one thread two posters with excellent historical reputations for objectivity whose opinions I respect more than most had chimed in back to back on a thread titled “Reffing in the Nova Game”.

There is absolutely no way that the ref that called that last foul on Nova was actually on the court the rest of the game. I dare anyone to prove it. The fact is, State got royally jobbed all night and for the Nova fans to actually boo at the end of the game was pretty sweet revenge actually. Take the refs and their phantom foul calls and over-the-back no calls out and we win by double figures IMO.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC. This was as bad as the Alabama game 2 years ago. Unreal. We would have won this one by 10-15 with honest refs.

I will add that the announcers might as well be wearind Nova jerseys as well. Elmore needs to do a better job of sticking up for the ACC. If I see that 70 year old, no neck midget reffing on of our games again I am going to vomit.

Even though we won I am still pi$$ed. No calls on over the back. Phantom fouls to give them multiple three point plays. JJ geeting hammered time after time with no calls. Every single loose ball out of bounds went to Nova. Hopefully these guys go back to refereeing junior high games in Boca Raton now that the tournament is over.

More fantastic comments from BJD are included below:

* Sid could give a clinic on effective working of the officials. Make your point emphatically, but don’t show the ref up. Although the foul against Grant was legitimate, 9 times out of 10, it isn’t called. I firmly believe it was a make up call.

* Another great sign – Sid and Ben share an enthusiatic post-game hug. I think those issues are behind us as well. It can and will be different guys on different nights.

* Yes, I know he bricked one of the free throws. But we have no chance to win that game without Degand’s hustle play. Not only did he stop Nova from getting an easy two, he skied between THREE Wildcats, and by sheer force of will, got position and drew the foul.

* Hickson is handling the double team better, and his fast break assist was a thing of beauty.

* Fells rose to the occasion all weekend. As we showed in the first two games, it’s hard to run an effective offense without him.

-Fells is blowing my mind right now, keep it up
-still the occasional bonehead play from time to time, but Grant is steady
-defensive rebounding has improved, unfortunately almost cost us the game
-Hickson needs to learn to pass out of the double, um, triple team
-Degand has got to sink those free throws or he should see himself on the bench at the end in a close game.
-With that said, Degand has improved by leaps and bounds, and he is finally penetrating in the half court set.

Once again, we play to the level of our competition, but I like that they never panic at the end. Despite the turnovers, caused by the press in the first half, I think we improved in overall decision-making. Also the rebounding was much tighter, but could and will get better. No turkey hangover here.

He didn’t mention the overall officiating for the game, but bad call at the end there, or not, I love being the lucky a-holes who got a win by way of of last second and questionable officiating,…for once.

  4. redfred2 11/26/2007 at 1:09 AM #

That was a game of two halves. Some good contributions from all throughout, but it was Fells first half, and then Grant, second half.

  5. Anthony Grundy 11/26/2007 at 1:12 AM #

Grant still forces up bad shots, which are flat and have no chance of going in.
Fells obviously put in a lot of shooting work this summer.
Degand can’t shoot FTs under pressure.
Costner seems like he hasn’t adjusted to his new role and the new players on the team.
McCauley is still McCauley – scores, rebounds, best passer on the team.
    Horner, is solid.
Gonzalez may need to play at the end of games if no one else can hit a FT.
Hickson is good all around with the exception of being horrible when double teams comes. He needs to learn how to read the double and pass quicker.

“This was a great tournament for us,” Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe said. “I think we grew a lot in a four-day, five-day period, just being away and just us together down here in this event.”

    ^^I hear ya Sid, your guys look like a completely different team than the W&M and UNO games. Maybe they had a chance to do some bonding on space mountain?? : }

  7. bTHEredterror 11/26/2007 at 1:59 AM #

/\I was hopeful that would be the effect. When guys are not getting along, no matter to what degree, going on the road can bring them together. Solid fan support down there, too. I heard the chanting on a regular basis.

It’s suspect that Gottlieb would so vehemently point out the last foul and not mention the push foul on Grant or the foul induced travel call. A truly, unforgivably bad call. I can concede we got a make-up, but we were due one.

  8. McLovin 11/26/2007 at 2:01 AM #

watching the halftime show of the usc-siu game. they showed the highlights of the state-nova game (o wait, i mean highlights of the last 2 seconds of the game)

right before showing the next highlight Gottlieb squeezed in a “bad, bad call” concerning the last foul. made it seem like nova got *undeservedly* robbed. goodness he needs to shut his mouth, move on, and change his tie.

We could have done without a posting of the ENTIRE lyrics to “Hungry Like The Wolf”. Seriously. Makes me want to drop F-bombs….

  10. MrPlywood 11/26/2007 at 2:47 AM #

LOL gumby… I always thought that X’s “The Hungry Wolf” was a much better song for the Pack – L.A. punk versus Duran’s fashion-boy new-wave… no contest. 🙂

Very glad to see that the rest of you felt the way I did. Even with my two young kids in the same room, I finally couldn’t help myself and started blasting the refs loudly in my living room. It only took that Nikita Kolloff Rusian Cikal (sp?) when J.J. was going up for the lay in to get me going (they called that one)…but J.J. was killed all night! I know we won, but with under a minute to play when Gavin Grant was called for travelling and he was no question pushed!!!!!! Great win fellas, you almost got jobed by the refs for sure, but we have to get more boards.

  12. Trip 11/26/2007 at 5:04 AM #

The officials were giving us the business most of the game no doubt, but we pulled it out in the end so it’s just time to look forward to Wednesday… MSU here we come.

While the team has many areas to improve upon, winning this tournament was certainly nice.

I remember the game from 1985(?) in which Walker Lambiotte hit two free throws to give us a 1-point win. It was in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament, and I believe the team we beat was Texas.

  14. Texpack 11/26/2007 at 8:24 AM #

We won the Holiday Festival Tournament in the Garden V’s first year and the Great Alaska Shootout his second or third year.

An article on Yahpp Sports about the game:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/recap?gid=200711250411&prov=ap

For the third straight game, Lowe used McDonald’s All-American freshman and leading scorer J.J. Hickson off the bench. Hickson didn’t attempt his first shot until 15 minutes into the game, but finished with 15 points and six rebounds.

The Wolfpack were having trouble assimilating him into the offense, and Hickson’s minutes dipped under 30 the two games after the loss. Lowe said it was too early to tell how he’d use the freshman down the road.

“Right now I’m trying to win ball games,” Lowe said. “You saw it tonight — we didn’t really care who got it done.”

Since when is a Wolfpack plural?

  16. Rick 11/26/2007 at 9:30 AM #

    Great win
We did alot of bad things but even more good ones.
    We are growing and learning.
This wil be atough team come March.

    The refs were awful.

This team will only be as good as Fells will allow it. He is the only truly irreplacable player. He has no viable backup and so when he plays bad we will struggle.

  17. LRM 11/26/2007 at 9:34 AM #

this team will be the end of me, i know it. i wont see 29.

  18. Pack92 11/26/2007 at 10:04 AM #

Good point about our play and the refs – don’t put yourself in a position that morons like that CAN take the game away from you. That being said, how sweet is it to WIN a game like this? For at least 10 years ,prior to last year, we would get in these games and lose (2 ACC championship games come to mind). Way to go Sid and way to go Wolpack for coming together.

  19. Packaholic1 11/26/2007 at 10:13 AM #

When you win a tough game against a ranked team that also played very well, and still can see many areas that need improvement – that seems to me to be a sign of good things to come.

  20. RickJ 11/26/2007 at 10:32 AM #

Where is the praise for our defense? All 5 teams we have played this year have had their lowest shooting percentage of the year against us. Below are the figures with the first percentage what they shot against the Pack and the second percentage their next worst shooting percentage in a game against any opponent:

    William & Mary – 29.1% – 35.7%;
    New Orleans – 35.4% – 41.3%;
    Rider – 36.2% – 41.4%;
    South Carolina – 32.9% – 37.7%; and
    Villanova – 42.6% – 43.1%.

This is not by accident. We have not given up many easy baskets and are very difficult to shoot over. Of course defense does not end until the ball is rebounded – we definitely need improvement here. However, it is just plain dumb to cry that Villanova had 18 offensive rebounds while NC State only had 8 without pointing out that Villanova missed 39 shots and the Pack only 20.

  21. skywalkerdt 11/26/2007 at 10:35 AM #

First, the Pack outplayed ‘nova- very encouraging sign when you look like the more talented team against a program like that.
Second, much work to do on the press break BUT they did improve with that as the game went along.
Third, Farnold is getting better by the game at running the team, if he can improve his free throw shooting somehow he appears to be more than viable with the talent that surrounds him. Javi simply needs more reps before much can be said about him, he’s a young kid that missed out on a lot of much needed work with that injury.
Fourth, Courtney Fells needs more games like last night to build confidence and he will become an every night force. His ability to shoot and to create his own shot will make him someone that needs to be accounted for even on an off night. He may also be the best athlete on the team.
Fifth, the officiating is putrid but at the same time you can understand ‘nova fans being upset about that one call, think what we would feel if it was the other way around. But take the win however you can get it and move on.
Great experience for the team that can only help them to gel better and move on to the next game.

  22. noah 11/26/2007 at 10:40 AM #

Definitely a bad call at the end of the game. But it was a game full of bad calls, so I don’t know why anyone would be surprised by one more.

    Beat Sparty.

  23. RegularExpression 11/26/2007 at 10:48 AM #

Good stat about the FG% RickJ. Although I think we are sometimes susceptible off the dribble the overall numbers don’t lie. We are a better defensive team than last year.

Nova definitely stepped up the halfcourt defensive pressure in the 2nd half last night. Their physical nature and getting hands in the passing lanes reminded me a bit of Duke. When we didn’t turn the ball over we got very good shots, as I’ve come to expect from this offense. I expect Michigan State will offer more of the same in terms of physical defense, so if we can take care of the ball…

  24. Stoner 11/26/2007 at 11:01 AM #

    Villanova missed 39 shots

How many of those misses were third and fourth chance attempts, from offensive rebounding? Part of the reasoning teams are shooting more than us is we are not rebounding well.

On a side note about turnovers. We had 16 at the half and 22 for the game. Only 6 second half turnovers and we were more aggressive against the press and found ways to beat it. Coaching staff made nice adjustments in this regard.

On free-throw shooting. Seems both teams had a terrible night with FT shooting, along with Rider and George Mason earlier in the day. Maybe there was something in the air or water.

I’m glad we’re winning, but I don’t know how long we can last by winning in this ugle manner.

I hope we can get the kinks worked out and don’t have to be in so many squeakers.
