NC State FINALLY won a football game with fundamental play on Saturday.

NO TURNOVERS and a strong performance in the kicking game from Steven Hauschka provided the (suddenly) hot Wolfpack its third consecutive victory since the mid-season bye week. Hauschka hit four of five field goals on Saturday, including the 42 yard game winner in overtime. (Link to WRAL-TV’s game entry)

The game also served as Coach Tom O’Brien’s first ever win against Miami…providing his ‘Boston College critics’ a stick in the eye for criticizing O’Brien’s inability to beat Miami while in Chestnut Hill. After today, obviously the issue wasn’t the coach.

The Wolfpack’s gameplan and strategy heading into Saturday was simple – stop the run and make the worst quarterback that we will face this year beat us with the throw.

That was easier said than done as Miami controlled State’s defensive line and the Wolfpack’s linebackers failed to make key tackles throughout the day. Down three points with the ball and less than five minutes to go, Miami refused to pass the ball and hammered FIFTEEN CONSECUTIVE RUNS against a seemingly defenseless Wolfpack before needing to pass to manage the clock. Even on a key 3rd and 6 with less than three minutes to go Miami ran for 8 yards and a first down. Behind the run, Miami was able to tie the game on a field goal with 0:19 seconds remaining.

Mike Archer’s defense was able to partially mitigate the Hurricane’s running attack by intercepting Kirby Freeman three times in only fourteen attempts. Freeman managed to complete only ONE pass in regulation. That one pass was a busted play for the Wolfpack’s pass coverage and went for an 84 yard touchdown. For some inexplicable reason, the ESPNU announcers made NO mention or issue of this phenomenal statistic.

With ^this as a backdrop, the world KNEW that Miami was not going to risk throwing the ball in overtime unless the Wolfpack MADE them. Even with 3rd down and 9 yards to go in the first overtime the Hurricanes chose to run up the middle and attempt a field goal that was missed wide to the left.

The half empty Orange Bowl was relatively quiet most of the day, with the roar of “Wolf / Pack” from NC State’s crowd resonating on television as loud as any Miami cheer of the afternoon.

After two consecutive wins, the NC State of the last two seasons returned for most of the first half of the Wolfpack’s visit to the Orange Bowl today. Untimely penalties. Very poor offensive line play. Allowing inexplicable big plays on defense while otherwise containing the opponent. Even Steven Hauschka missed a 30 yard field goal after nailing 10 straight to open the season.

The Wolfpack’s offense found a little stride in the last six minutes of the second quarter. While using the pass more effectively than earlier in the game, State put together two good drives with one resulting in a touchdown and headed to halftime down only 10-7.

In the second half, State managed to keep the Hurricane defense on the field and smartly shifted to a no-huddle offense when Miami showed some fatigue. Additionally, an outbreak of dropped passes and untimely penalties impaired State drives and forced the Wolfpack to resort to kicking. With 6:55 to go in the game, place kicker Steven Hauschka hit a forty-seven yard field goal to give the Wolfpack a 16-13 lead. Hauschka has hit 3 of 4 field goals today and has consistently boomed his kickoffs deep into the end zone.

D’Andre Morgan came up large for the Wolfpack with two big pass break-ups in the end zone in the last 35 seconds of the game.

The Smurf Turf Bowl would be a major accomplishment after starting 1-5. Amato’s teams would always tank an easy game just when you thought they were on a roll. TOB has to manage the mental part of this “prosperity” very carefully if we are to finish 2-1 over our final three games.

  2. waxhaw 11/04/2007 at 12:34 PM #

We aren’t likely to win out but if you look at remaining schedules, there is a decent chance that everyone in the Atlantic, except for BC, could finish 7-5 and tied for second in the division.

Again, I don’t think we get to 7-5 but we have a better chance today, than we did at 11:30 yesterday morning. One game at a time and keep it going.

  3. RabidWolf 11/04/2007 at 1:05 PM #

The only game remaining on the schedule that really worries me is @ Wake. I feel more confident about 6-6 than 7-5, but this IS the Wolfpack!

Let’s pack up C-F this coming Saturday….be loud….cheer the ‘Pack to a big win over the ‘Holes!!!

  4. noah 11/04/2007 at 2:01 PM #

I agree about being worried about Wake. Hell, we could win OR lose the rest of our games…but Wake is the tallest hurdle, IMO.

  5. SuperStuff 11/04/2007 at 2:20 PM #

I have a lot of respect for what Grobe has done at Wake. I hope we can beat them.

UNC’s Yates seems to be throwing alot of interceptions lately and we seem to be getting in the groove of getting to them. I feel really good about this game with the Smurfs right now. Maryland really should have beaten that team saturday. A few questionable play calls cost them a chance at a win.

  6. RabidWolf 11/04/2007 at 2:21 PM #

IMHO, we will beat UNX, simply because of the confidence factor, and the fact that almost EVERY player on the team realizes the magnitude of this rivalry. If the D line can get through, that will cause major problems for the pass-first offense of the ‘holes. Of course, the reverse is also true, so the O line will once again be tested. As we have all seen, give Evans enough time, and he will pick a secondary apart.

“Those guys need to review the impartiality clause in their contracts.”
Impartiality clause? ESPN? Can you say Stuart Scott? I’m still waiting for Stu to yell “Tar Heel” when they show Brett Favre burning the crap out of Dre Bly in OT against the Broncos. For some reason Stu didn’t mention that.

Stuart Scott…..the pictoral definition of…..a joke.

    Clueless, self-aggrandizing talking haircut.

there was some rumbling from NCSU fans that TOB was the wrong hire, basically “Football Herb”, and wanted to replace him.

How many of these alleged fans were actually State fans, over 21, and with a triple-digit IQ?

    My guess is exactly zero.

For example, there was a fan with “pack” in his/her screen name that had alot of negative, stupid posts when State was losing…..but hasn’t been seen over the last three games. Do you really think that this was a State fan?

Does anyone else remember that Tony Scott INT in the win at Clemson in 1998? That Gray INT yesterday seemed strikingly similar to that one.

  11. PackerInRussia 11/04/2007 at 3:19 PM #

“Is there anyone out there, who wants to can TOB and not give him a chance?”

Only if he begins talking about interchangeable parts, positionless players, and chopping wood (unless of course a ram’s neck happens to be laying across the wood).

  12. StateFans 11/04/2007 at 4:03 PM #

Don’t give mental midgets any credence on this site. Let the idiot boards talk about ‘some fans’ who are morons.

  13. RAWFS 11/04/2007 at 4:11 PM #

VAWolf, it’s my experience that a lot of those so-called fans are either very young or are Wal-Mart fans who have no understanding what it takes to build a solid football team. Even in the depths of the “first half” of the season, I never lost faith in TOB, because his record of excellence speaks for itself. It was really a matter of time until things got turned around.

State still needs to improve and I suppose that right about now the players are back in the film room learning and growing. Thing is, even though there have been some mistakes, the team has kept its poise and has not given in when things seem to go the wrong way. That never-quit attitude is a reflection of the Marine mentality at the top, and it should be what all fans of the Wolfpack have as well.

  14. LRM 11/04/2007 at 4:22 PM #

Winning this weekend will do more for TOB than all the other coaching he’s done to make us a better team this season. It’s that simple.

  15. RabidWolf 11/04/2007 at 4:36 PM #

    not to mention in-state recruiting.

  16. vtpackfan 11/04/2007 at 5:06 PM #

“Winning this weekend will do more for TOB than all the other coaching he’s done to make us a better team this season. It’s that simple.”

Make sure not to mix our projections with the teams reality. Win or lose he’s said repeatedly that he didn’t come here this season to coach one game, one rival, or one season. He want’s to do atleast 5 years, maybe 10 years, of getting this program on the map.

Outside the triangle, and in specific households across the land, this game has meaning. To the majority of americans this is just a “cute little backyard tussle”. It’s the one and only reason I hope Butch settle’s into his role as HC in Chapel Hill. We need this game to have real rewards, as well as bragging rights.

  17. LRM 11/04/2007 at 5:29 PM #

This isn’t meant to be derisive by any means, but I could honestly care less if the State/Carolina game matters to the rest of America, because it matters to me, and it matters to every other State fan.

Regardless of what TOB might say, he has to understand that; that was my point about what it can do for him as far as whatever criticism he may experience. He’s done a great job turning this team around and beating Carolina can only drive that point home.

Personally, I’d love to see a Kansas on Nebraska woodshed beating.

After watching Darren McFadden last night and Dennis Dixon, I don’t see how anybody can talk about Ryan for the Heisman any more. I put them in a different class from Ryan. As for the State/UNC rivalry, Lou Holtz said back in 1972, while the Vietnam War was still raging that finding out your neighbor was a Carolina fan was like finding out you had run up on the Vietcong. It brought this sick feeling usually followed by a lot of nastiness. Also, did anybody notice that while Haushka was leading the victory parade across the field yesterday, Daniel Evans immediately headed over the Miami bench. I thought that showed a lot of character.

    should have read over to

  20. Astral Rain2 11/04/2007 at 6:16 PM #

SFN: True. I’m just not used to State being successful I guess. Got a feeling I’ll learn to get used to it real soon.

  21. redfred2 11/04/2007 at 6:21 PM #

Almost afraid to say this right now, but didn’t TOB say he wasn’t planning on ending his bowl streak this season. That was a very early and very optimistc, preseason predicton, but it would be unbelievable if he somehow accomplishes it.

  22. noah 11/04/2007 at 8:09 PM #

Matt Ryan for the Heisman was always a joke…of course, the voters have allowed the trophy to BECOME a joke.

McFadden, Dixon, Mario Manningham, the receiver for Cal…all much better candidates than Ryan.

Hell, I can name five players off Michigan’s squad that are better players than Ryan: Mike Hart, Manningham, Chad Henne, Jake Long, and Shawn Crable.

Here’s what I liked about yesterday’s game. We got down by 10 – and trailed most of the game, but we stuck to our game plan. No one panicked. They just got the job done.

Going into the next game – I’m alot concerned about the virtual collapse of what had been a good running D the last 2 weeks. I do think our staff should be able to make some good adjustments though.

I emailed Chip Alexander about his story on the Miami game and asked him if the Hauschka comment about the other punter being stupid was a typo or not heard correctly etc., here’s the email exchance:

    Dear Chip,

You wrote this in your story, at least this is what “made it to print” on the web:

“The other kid missed, so I saw the opportunity,” Hauschka said. “I was just happy to be in that situation. I’ve never had a chance to win a game like that.

“I was really excited to have that opportunity, especially if the other kicker looked like an idiot.”

Did Hauschka really say “the other kicker “looked like an idiot?” I thought it must have been a typo.

    thanks,
    Ismael

    (Chip replied):

Thanks for the message. That’s what he said but I’m not sure Hauschka
wanted it to come out quite that way. He’s not that kind of kid. But
    … that’s what he said.

That would have been a great snide comment about Connor Barth

The people, who were rumbling were die hard State fans and alums. They just ran out of patience with the state of sports at N.C. State and I think wanted to lash out when and where they could.
