The Wolf Web is On Board

Yesterday’s entry about cheering at NC State games has picked up some attention at The Wolf Web in this thread.

Their conversation discusses the unfamiliarity of many NC State fans with the words to the University’s alma mater. We couldn’t agree more with this problem. This issue will not be fixed until (1) the Einstein’s who manage the scoreboards at Carter-Finley & the RBC start scrolling the songs’ words while the band plays and (2) the University makes the teaching of songs, traditions, and ‘intangibles’ a priority on campus.

While we are on this topic – I hope that realize that the “Red and White” (from State and we know we are the best…) is NOT the NC State fight song. The NC State fight song also has very good lyrics but no-one ever sings them because, again, the words are never shared with the masses. You can see the words to the fight song in the first comment posted under this entry,

I haven’t checked any message boards the last 24 hours, so if you don’t see anything out there then please feel free to take the time push the message through.

As freshmen the swim team had to learn the fight song & alma mater. We also had to sing it in front of Case Dining Hall which was all athletes at that time. I thought it was a great tradition.

At Miami they have taken the Souljah Boy Superman song and changed the lyrics to Hurricane lyrics. Something simple like this would be an easy way to get the crowd into the game. It was used a couple times during tv timeouts at Miami.

I think State fans should chant the Konami Code.

LEEEEEFFFFFFT … LEEEEEFFFFT … RIIIIIIIIGHT … RIIIIIIGHT … UP! DOWN! UP! DOWN! B-A…START!!!

Watch Gavin Grant go out there with spread fire, max health and unlimited lives.

    highstick,
I have been to a few games in Williams-Brice, too. That was a few years ago, back in the Lou Holtz days. Also, I was in NROTC at State, but we only had Tuesday drill days. As far as I know, all the ROTC students there still have drill at least once a week.

Anyway, back on topic: When I was at South Carolina, I remember hearing something about how their fight song was updated in the ’70s or around then. It seemed strange to me, because the fight song sounded like something from a lavish Broadway musical. Well, I looked it up, and sure enough, the melody is from a musical. Is that what we really want? I say keep the military-themed anthem and not mess with a good thing. If we do, we’re almost certain to end up with something worse.

Count me in among those who think that knowing/singing the Alma Mater is a good thing.

I always agree with peeps learning and singing their Alma Maters…but perhaps that’s too much to ask at this point.

Learning to respectfully sing (or shut up during) the National Anthem properly at CF would be a start.

Cosmo96, I am shocked, shocked I tell you to find out that South Carolina’s fight song is from a broadway musical!! Are you SURE its not North Carolina’s? Surely, they are the only school with enough panache to bring the beauty and majesty of american musical theater to sporting events!

I moved this from the earlier discussion – from this morning

It’d be great to come up with something akin to the Hotty Toddy, which Bama copied with “Ramma Yamma, Yella Hammer, give them hell Alabama.”

If the our esteemed owners are so inclined to sponsor this sort of contest, I provide the part of the prize package – an autographed copy of “The Wolfpack: A History of NC State Athletics.” Its dated, published in 1976 or so.

So how about it? New Chant for State!

“Learning to respectfully sing (or shut up during) the National Anthem properly at CF would be a start.”

And take off your damn hat.

Here’s a thought and some fun. The game is ready to start. Suddenly a wolf’s howl and then the crowd yells:

“Ah-ooooo We’re wolves from Raleigh!” Repeat

(FYI — Think the tune Werewolves of london)

We can repeat this in other school’s arenas or even add

“We’re wolves in Durham (add city name)”

For a song on the big score board along with those videos they do in CF it might go like this:

“I saw a Demon Deacon with his hat in his hand
Walking through the streets of Raleigh in the rain
He was looking to get an get out of town
    Wound up losing again.

    {Refrain}
    Ah-ooooo, we’re wolves of Raleigh
    Ah-ooooo
    Ah-ooooo, we’re wolves of Raleigh
    Ah-ooooo

If you Heels hear him howling around your door
    You better let him in
Little old Tar Heel got mutilated late last night
    We’re wolves of Raleigh again

    {Refrain}

He’s the hairy-handed wolf who ran amok in Durham
Lately he’s been overheard in Greenville
You better stay away from him
He’ll rip your lungs out, man
Ha, I’d like to meet his tailor

    {Refrain}

Well, I saw Coach Tom walking with the Pack
Doing the we’re wolves of Raleigh
I saw Coach Lowe walking with the Pack
Doing the we’re wolves of Raleigh

    Ah-ooooo, we’re wolves of Raleigh
    Ah-ooooo, we’re wolves of Raleigh

The ‘Fight Song’ and ‘Red and White’ are not hard to learn at all. I definitely think everyone should know it, or at least ‘Red and White’

I personally would like to see the student section jump in the stands with the band during the ‘JMU’ cadence. When I was in marching band, the students and band did it, and it always got me pumped up

Thanks Noah – can’t stand it when people do not take their hats off during the anthem. Makes me think momma raised them in a barn………come to think of it, we are the good old Ag school. Take your hats off anyway. Show some class.

  12. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 10/23/2007 at 6:39 PM #

My question is why take of your hat? I’m not saying you shouldn’t I’m just asking why. The usual response is that it shows respect… OK, why does taking of you hat show respect? Seems to me it just shows hat head.

The only logical answer that anyone has given me is that it is Biblical that men’s heads should be uncovered when praying or entering a temple. However, the second part of this is that a woman’s head should always be covered when praying or entering a house of worship. If that is the case, in the vein of equality, I would suggest that women should start covering their heads when entering a building or the National Anthem is performed lest they not be accused of being disrespectful and accused of being raised in a barn.

  13. CarnifeX 10/23/2007 at 6:39 PM #

the ones raised in the barn are the ones with the pride.

  14. FrankManor 10/23/2007 at 6:52 PM #

I was more talking about the crass and tasteless shouting of “Red” during the national anthem…the hats are a small deal compared to that.

    just plan disrespectful.

  15. john of sparta 10/23/2007 at 8:09 PM #

    agree with noah, mike, frank…
    1. stand.
    2. take off hats.
    3. hand over heart.
only after all of the above is respectfully accomplished,
then blog about changing the cheers/fight song/etc.

  16. noah 10/23/2007 at 10:18 PM #

“My question is why take of your hat?”

    Because you are a gentleman.

For the same reason you stand when a woman gets up from the table. For the same reason you hold the door for people. For the same reason you shake someone’s hand by looking them in the eye, offering a firm grip and and a “Hello, how are you?” and not some limp, dead-fish, foot-shufflin’, mumblewumble toe-gazing crap.

Because your mother and/or father raised you better. Because you are not a child and not some punk-ass douche.

It has nothing to do with gender equality. It has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. It has nothing to do with political correctness.

It has everything to do with being a gentleman.

Cosmo, it’s “Step to the Rear” at SC.

You guys want to hear something really revolting, though. I was in the Carolina Club at the SC-NC game and they kept playing that stupid “Hi Zigga Zumba” song which I never have understood other that they still want to be Ivy League! Maybe it’s “Bush League” though!

Question for you guys. Should a girl remove her hat also during the National Anthem? I think so, but they sure don’t seem to do it very often.

Another good reason for taking the hat off during the National Anthem is that I’ll snatch the damn thing off your freakin’ head if you don’t! I served my time to give you the freedom to say what you want, not to act like a fool in the process though! I can’t believe someone is stupid enough to not know the answer to that question or is disrespectful enough to not want to!

When I was at Freshman Orientation we were pulled into the theater in the student center and taught the Alma Mater. I had heard my Dad (’50) sing it enough times over the years to know the words already. He would always turn up the radio to be able to hear the band playing the Alma Mater at halftime. I have never, however, known the words to the fight song, only to “The Red & White From State.”
