Chuck Amato Q&A

Q: Do you feel that you had an adversarial relationship with the media while at N.C. State as some have suggested?

A:I think it’s all bull, because 95 percent of the [media] people that sat in those meetings, there was one paper that had it out — not just for me — but our university, in any sport, any game or any guy sitting in that [head football coach] seat, or the basketball seat. It was ridiculous.

I had more fun in these meetings, because I tried to make it fun. I said, ‘You guys have a job to do, and I’ve got a job to do, and I’ll do everything I can do to help you to a point, and you guys do everything you can to help me, to a point.’ I understand you have a job to do. I had people come up to me and say, ‘Chuck, don’t change. We love it. We haven’t had somebody take a 15-minute thing, turn it into a hour thing, and we’re laughing our [butt] off on the way out of here.’ There’s only one group. … It was bull. I didn’t have a problem with the press, even them. …

I’ve been around long enough to know, the power of the pen, you can’t beat them because you don’t run out of ink. You’re going to write whatever you want to. … They wanted me to be really [mad]. You know what, ‘Just keep feeding it. You’re doing my marketing for me [writing about] red shoes, the glasses, he drives a Corvette.’ … They would say, ‘Boy, you’re flamboyant.’ Why am I flamboyant? ‘Well, you drive a Corvette.’ Mike Krzyzewski drives a Jaguar, but I’ve never read that in the paper.

My reading was that he didn’t have a problem with many of the writers except for possibly a few from the local rag, the N&O.

From reading that article he makes it sound like it was a huge surprise that we fired him. Does he honestly feel that his actions and results as head coach over his tenure were enough to keep the position. Chuck said that we were just on the “threshold” of competing for the National Championship, but in retrospect over the past two years I left more games frustrated with the team – win or lose – then I did excited about the future or what I’d experienced that day. I know he did bring enthusiam to the program and can be held somewhat responsible for the expansions at Carter Finley, but that also can be attributed to other factors including new support in the wolfpack club and dare I say it even Ol Jed could deserve maybe a little credit too.

All and all I that article just pissed me off, good ridance – I hope we beat the crap out of Boston College & FSU next year. And I hope FSU is riddled with penalties (even though I like B.B.)

I didn’t agree with the play and coaching at times, but I don’t feel that way about Chuck Amato at all. Personally, I hope he knows that we greatly appreciated what he accomplished, and that he knows this place is now operating on a totally different level, due in large part to the spirit and enthusiasm that he personified while in Raleigh. I wish no ill will on Chuck Amato in the future, and I hope he gets whatever he wants out of coaching college football.

Chuck was great, I enjoyed seeing him on the sidelines and his attitude during his time here. I was sad to see him go but given the talent on the team and the lack of performance you had to wonder what was going on. I agree with redfred as well, I hope the best for him and hope that he doesn’t use his knowledge of us against us next year too well!

Chuck doesn’t get it, and I don’t think he ever will. One bad year? WTF? He fell short of reasonable expectations for 4 straight years, and had serious management problems.

    Pride goeth before a fall.

  9. dantheman 04/08/2007 at 7:25 AM #

My struggle over the past 4-5 years was partially about results, but mostly about the embarrassing brand of football we played. Turnovers, penalties, general undisciplined play. It was just awful to watch.

  10. BJD95 04/08/2007 at 7:46 AM #

It’s also abundantly clear that Chuck was ready and willing to make Trestman the fall guy, and he apparently thought that would be enough. That was my biggest fear at the end of last year – that Chuck would successfully line up someone else to take the hit. It would have been like covering up a wound with a Band-Aid when 50 stitches are needed.

Remember, SFN documented the abundant problems within the football program last offseason.

  11. branjawn 04/08/2007 at 8:01 AM #

Plain and simple, we are better off now than we were then. Chuck was one of the factors taking us to the next level. Honestly, I would rather be us with last year’s record than Wake Forest with last year’s record. Why, because we are at a higher level. Which means we have a higher ceiling. WF did the best they will EVER do last year. And odds are won’t see that success/luck for a while. Let us not forget the state of NCSU football before CTC. To a lesser degree I would say the same about basketball before Herb.
Yes, Chuck deserved the boot, but don’t everybody become a bunch of spoiled a-holes. Say thanks for the memories (and there were some darn good ones) and move on.

    HAPPY EASTER

I was really hoping that you were being overly pessimistic. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

  13. GoldenChain 04/08/2007 at 8:24 AM #

And as far as the media, I think it is a little disingenuous to blame someone for shooting at you when you hand them the ammunition and put a target on your chest.
I too am thankful for the positive things Chuck did. Although I think he had done about the limit of what his style and managerial abilities could muster and it was best for both of us to part company.
An example of symbolism and vibrato over substance.

Maybe that’s good because TO’B seems to be the opposite much like Sheridan. In that regard, Chuck set the stage for a caoch of substance to take over.

  14. GoldenChain 04/08/2007 at 8:30 AM #

Oh and branjawn, WF won the ACC, last time NCSU did it? Fall of my senior year………1979. That’s 28 years ago!
If the choice is a high profile program that sputters and misses then hits then misses vs a low profile program that wins, I’ll take the winner.
(and what is WF’s record against us in say, the last 4 seasons?)

    IT’S DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL!

    Happy Easter!

Neither Chuck nor the writer gets it. In the last 3 years, if it wasn’t one side of the ball, it was the other. It had nothing to do w/ his ride or his shoes or his sunglasses.

Was the problem Trestman? Yes. Who hired Trestman? Trestman’s tenure made the Mazzone era seem like the Golden years.

Who do you blame on 3 years of worstening QB play? You can the blame the OC – but you don’t have just one OC during that period.

Give Chuck credit – he helped change the face and the talent level of NC State football. Unfortunately, there was no evidence that the results on the field were changing from our historical norm.

this interview really brought home that coach amato has no perspective, we were really really bad last year. Yet I think he still sees last season as a series of broken plays that were so close, and we were close to winning each game last year. This is probably the same thing that made him difficult to work for.

It just brings home (yet again) that the right decision was made. I wish coach amato well, and know that his dedication and love for the pack will not be surpassed.

  18. redfred2 04/08/2007 at 9:56 AM #

I thinks pretty much accepted that maybe, just maybe, that if Chuck had had a good/great player playing in every position on the football field, he *might* have been able to pull something spectacular off. But that was the only way. Since that’s never the case around here, or anywhere for that matter, we needed someone who come in and take Chuck’s great ground work and do more with what we do have already in place.

Chuck Amato did greatly improve the atmosphere surrounding and the overall NC State football program in his seven years in Raleigh. What gets me is that another coach, who was in town three years longer that he, one who sapped all of life out of another program, then quickly left with it sitting on it’s ear, but he still gets defended to this very day.

The actual play in both programs was unforgivable at times, but Chuck Amato left the program with many more positive factors in it’s favor.

  19. thebigwood 04/08/2007 at 10:03 AM #

What makes me excited about this season is what Chuck left…His attitude really brought some great additions to the football program…excellent athletes and great facilities…For that I am thankful. But obviously Chuck couldnt coach, and it seems like TOB can take those positives and add some good coaching…

  20. Running Wolf 04/08/2007 at 10:12 AM #

I am tried of anything that Amato has to say…he had his chance and regardless of the mix of history now being told, Amato was the NC State Football program leader…it was his baby and IMHO he is a great assistant and some folks like Amato are not the complete package when it comes to being a Head Coach…with that being said, I hope he is happy and successful except when NC State is playing FSU…GO PACK!!

  21. EverettBeez 04/08/2007 at 10:16 AM #

Coach Amato left us with a lot of good memories (great victories over the invinciable FSU), and improved facilities that will keep the Pack competitve into the future. He also left us with some bad memories and frustration at what could of been. I beleive he helped us take a couple huge steps up, but I think he had taken us as far as he could. It was time for our program to find someone who could take us the next level.

Coaches repeatedly announce that they are leaving because they’ve taken this program as far they can, and need a new challenge. College programs shouldn’t be any different. It was time for the ol’ red terrors to move on and up.

Good luck Coach Amato, it was fun and I appreciate all you did!

  22. WolfPup35 04/08/2007 at 11:04 AM #

To be very blunt….Phillip Rivers saved his ass for four years!

Everyone seems to forget that it was MOC that recruited Rivers to come to NCSU, and the only reason he didn’t end up at ND was because they wanted him to be a TE, not a QB!!

Amato could recruit Florida like nobody else, but he alienated many HS coaches here in his own backyard. The result? UNC had a bunch of NC recruits, and the only thing they did was BEAT NCSU OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

Another problem with Amato…discipline (or lack thereof). How many games were lost because of stupid penalties? CTC could sing about FSU leading in the penalty category and winning national championships…whatever.

NC State should have kept Amato…..as the ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!!!! Talk about fundraising! The man could sell an icemaker to an Eskimo. Need proof? Just look at the Carter….just look at the Murphy center…look at Vaughn Towers!

TOB will be greatly successful here, and of this I have no doubt.
Go Wolfpack! Let’s get back where we need to be…beat UNX, and continue to DOMINATE FSU!!!

  23. brickman 04/08/2007 at 11:09 AM #

as for chuck great recruiter not a head coach he did this he did that . what a joke he never had nc state where it should have been even beating ND in gator bowl we as fans put us in gator bowl with tickets we buy . close games is when coaching counts and that is fact. we could see that last year . if you talk a big game you have to back it up . he said it himself we were this close that close .when we had pr at qb we should have been a lot lot better. as for media they write what they write give them something good to write about . last 10 years in bball what can you write about just above avg. bball . it was nice to see the coverage we got this year .in basketball . mister red coat was the asprin for that headache. and i hope tob is the valume we need for the pain that we had in football this year .just think about it. one word akron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. WolfPup35 04/08/2007 at 11:21 AM #

Akron was a hose job by a bad official! Somebody should send that line judge a coupon to lenscrafters! Also…NO ACC OFFICIAL SHOULD BE A GRADUATE OR SUPPORTER OF ANY ACC SCHOOL AND THAT INCLUDES DIRECTORS AND COMMISSIONERS!!!!!

BTW..I think you meant to say Valium.

  25. brickman 04/08/2007 at 11:34 AM #

never took any or seen the word . never should have been that close of game . let us leave the arguments in court and play the game on the field .they the official did us very well in bball besides mairst game. SHOULD HAVE NEVER EVER BEEN THAT CLOSE OF GAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
