20 Wins! State Advances in NIT (Updated Sat 4:30pm)

“The atmosphere in Reynolds hasn’t lost anything.”

ACCNow Blog Entry

NC State’s Red Coat Revival continued on a night where Reynolds Coliseum was rocking, and the officiating was even more unstable as the ‘not-good-enough-for-the-Big-Dance’ zebras lost control of the game in the in the second half. In a season where NC State didn’t have a player called for a single technical foul, the YMCA referees from Hillsborough Street deemed it necessary to call two technicals on NC State players in the same game?!

NC State’s 11th NIT Appearance is shaping up to be a good one. The Wolfpack controlled 80% of Friday night’s game and led the last 32 minutes and 12 seconds to defeat Marist 69-62.

The win was particularly satisfying to many old-school Wolfpackers who found it hard to swallow that NC State lost its last meaningful game in the Old Barn when Herb Sendek’s 1999 Wolfpack fell victim to Princeton in the NIT. As opposed to the last NIT game played in Reynolds, tonight’s match-up only had one team on the floor who thought that the role of center is to float around the three-point line. Tonight’s win now means that program may have won its last meaningful game in the building.

Fans who tried to watch the game on ESPNU were met with quite a surprise when ESPNU chose to stick with Live coverage of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Ultimately, the channel switched to the game 25 minutes late (9:55) and with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. It is hard to understand how/why ESPN had the right/power to dictate the day and starting time of our game if they weren’t going to actually televise it!

State now advances to the NIT Quarterfinals where to play West Virginia for the second time time this season. In early December, West Virginia defeated State 71-60 in one of the Wolfpack’s first games without Engin Atsur. The rematch of the Wolfpack and Mountaineers will take place on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and will be televised on ESPN (if it Tuesday) or ESPN2 (if Wednesday).

Some quick numbers to absorb:

* Sidney Lowe’s postseason record improves 5-1.

* The Red Blazer’s record improves to 5-1-1.

* NC State wins twenty games for the year.

* Sidney Lowe becomes the fourth NC State coach to record 20 wins in his first season. The previous ones were Les Robinson, Press Maravich, and Everett Case.

* NC State has appeared in six consecutive postseasons.

* With the win, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2007 postseason record improves to an impressive 10-2. In addition to the NCAA Tournament games, Florida State defeated the Big Ten’s Michigan earlier in the day to also advance to the NIT quarterfinals.

The last two comments left by our readers in this previous entry are very relevant to my comments. One comment is a review of the December’s State-WVU game and the other is an eye-witness account of Reynolds tonight.

I just got back from Reynolds. What a game. We all got to see the players up close and personal in the tight, small gym. The noise meter was not there, and neither did they turn off the lights prior to our introduction. But I passed these off as relating to the last-minuteness of all the preparations…

…I got my tix scalped, it was a bunch, and it was worth it ; } just a fun, fun environment. it seemed like the players decided to cheer us for supporting them when the game was over, seemed like a pleasant mutual gesture, us applauding them, and the players applauding their base.

Updated for Good Press:

* CBS Sportsline says that State is continues an “Exhasuting Run”

There’s still some magic left in Sidney Lowe’s red jacket — and in North Carolina State’s creaky Reynolds Coliseum.

Ben McCauley scored 19 points and the Wolfpack continued their exhausting, exhilarating postseason run with a 69-62 victory over Marist on Friday night in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Dennis Horner and Gavin Grant added 13 points apiece for N.C. State (20-15), which played its sixth game in nine days and improved to 5-1 in that span.

The weary Wolfpack fed off a raucous sellout crowd in a rare game at Reynolds, their venerable former home where a generation ago Lowe played point guard on the Jim Valvano-led team that won the 1983 national title.

* S6 always has the statstical recap.

Dennis Horner didn’t miss a shot, be it from the field or the line, and scored 13 points in 15 minutes–34.7 pts/40 minutes. Now that’s some scoring punch off the bench.

* The N&O’s Blog is all over One More Win in the Old Barn.

* The N&O’s newspaper also focused on the Wolfpack fans “Rocking Reynolds”

When N.C. State’s players padded onto the Reynolds Coliseum court Friday night for warm-ups, thousands of red-clad Wolfpack fans rose and gave them a standing ovation.

Coach Sidney Lowe appeared later — in his red coat — and received a roaring standup cheer from the capacity crowd of 8,400. This was a resounding tribute to a resilient, underdog team that turned February frustration into a few festive days in March.

My favorite memories of being in Reynolds are:
One Carolina game (I was sitting near the back of the endzone bleachers). My date couldn’t hear me speak an hour before the game for the constant “Go to hell Carolina”.
Then there was one State/Duke game where the show was Kenny Car vs. Tate Armstrong (I was sitting on the sidelines for that game).
I’ve been nowhere as loud as Reynolds (or as hot either).

“It seemed at times that everything was stacked against the team, but they still won. For that, I’m proud. I’m proud to say I was at Reynolds tonight.”

That is a huge difference in the mindset of this coach and you know who and it filters down to the team. They just suck it up and go.

One thing I was thinking about is how much our offense has improved during the year. I think some of it has to do with the players improving (and boy have they), but alot of it is Sid figuring out how best to use them and their individual skills to his advantage. WVU will not see the same team while we know exactly what we will get from them.

Quote “was in the student section clapping my hands till i had blisters, screaming till i was hoarse, and stomping the ground till my feet burned. It was like a workout tonight, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had at a state game in my college career.”

Time for us to get back in shape.. we can make the RBC loud too if there is something to cheer for. Go Pack!

We should schedule some non conference games (yes, plural) for Reynolds from now on. We only lost one non-conf home game this year, and that was to highly overrated Alabama. We lost by 7. I believe Reynolds would have given us a good chance at a different outcome.

Anyways, I feel like 2 NonConf games (and not against gimmes like the “heritage” game) would be good for the program.

    Het, Beowulf…

Add “Sit down Lefty” to that list too. My first ACC game at Reynolds was a Maryland game in the late 70’s and it was like nothing I had ever seen before.
I haven’t had the chance to go back to Reynolds to see the Pack play since they left for the RBC Center, but I did go to the Broughton-Leesville Road game that was played there a few years back and it was a great atmosphere that brought back old memories. I’m jealous of everyone that got a ticket last night.

^^speaking of the “name the player, you suck” chant, one of my most memorable moments in Reynolds was against Maryland when they had Len Bias. The crowd started the “Lenny, you suck” chant, while he was single-handedly keeping Maryland in the game. It was actually hard for me to say it, as he was one great player. Can’t even remember if we won the game, but I was right behind the Maryland bench and it was great! Now, it’s on to WVa! Survive and Advance!

As bad as the ESPNU annoncers typically are, and as pissed as I was over rasslin pre-empting the tip-off, having Bucky Waters call the game was really nice because he has some perspective with regards to our program.

I think the Marist coach owes a tip of the hat to Coach V for his late game strategy. The only problem was. we didn’t miss many free throws.

I don’t think anyone mentioned it, but there were times in the first half that the team looked brilliant. The best I’ve seen them play. Great passing, aggressive moves to the basket.

I think a trend we can expect to see annually is the team improving as the year progresses. That’s what you want. A coach who develops his team as a whole and his players individually. And I think that’s what we saw on the court last night.

I can’t decide which was more unbelievable, the refs who apparently were in their first big league game, or ESPNU showing a FREAKING WRESTLING MATCH WHILE THE GAME WAS ON!!!!!!!!!

This year has been a triumph for our new coach. He promised that the players would have fun. I’ve got to believe that, except for that last 2 minutes (2 hour?) stretch, that they had a great time last night.

  9. PackGirl 03/17/2007 at 9:22 AM #

So many neat aspects to the atmosphere last night as many have commented. One that tops my list was the playing of the Star Spangled Banner- many/most of the crowd had their hands on their hearts, as did the Wolfpack. What made it surreal was the guy behind me who was singing at the top of his lungs. He had a very nice voice too. I coldn’t help thinking it wouldn’t have happened at the Dean Dome.

As to the Marist tactics and the roughness of their fouls I don’t have any beef with anyone except the officials for their totally inept performance last night. In my view, both Horner and Costner deserved the T’s they got however both those were THE DIRECT RESULT of the refs failing to control the game. Were they partial? I don’t think so – they were just inept.
Luckily no player got hurt through tempers flaring, no major events happened (more to the credit to two teams well coached in behavior).
Both coaches were less than happy with the refs (and rightly so). I certainly hope that isn’t a fair representation of the average Big 10 official.
Nice to invite someone once again to “Red Hell”

The idea of scheduling a “Real” game for the heritage game is a good one- maybe not a team that would get a lot of ticket sales, but from a tough mid-major opponent. Throw a team the calibre of Winthrop, S.Illinois, Wichita St., Fordham. In other words- it would be a good spot to put a tough A-10/MVC/Small Conf opponent. They’d play us, we’d get some props for scheduling a tough mid-major who “doesn’t get the chance”, it wouldn’t kill us if there’s a loss if we scheduled right (make sure the team is a potential at-large to begin the year).

At the very least- it would get the team prepared for the 6-11 game next year (I think a realistic though tough goal for next year is to see State as a 6 seed in the NCAA instead of NIT)

What a great game for this team, the program, and its fans. I was there in spirit, listening to the radio broadcast online from here in Miami. I have such fond memories of the WVU NIT game in 1997 in that place, so loud, and its good to be so proud of this team again. I hope thats the last NIT game we play at home for a long time!

  13. RickJ 03/17/2007 at 9:41 AM #

What a night! The spirit of the Pack is really at a wonderful level. My favorite moment was when Lowe first came on the court. He teased the crowd by having the team and all the support staff already on the court for 2 or 3 minutes before making his entrance. At the South end of Reynolds we could see him coming down the corridor behind several breaks in the curtain. It was bedlam when he hit the floor in his red coat. Don’t underestimate how smart a move this was by Lowe. Being humble has its place in life but big time college basketball coaches rarely have too much of this quality.

Later in the game during a timeout, Tom O’Brien walked around the South end floor seats to get to his seat on press row. That end of Reynolds gave him a standing ovation. He looked a little stunned by the ovation and I really think it took him a moment to realize it was for him. He gave a wolf sign that made the cheers even louder.

^ Remember Sidney is a showman. If you don’t think so, just recall his last game in Reynolds at the end with the between the legs behind the back pass to Thurl for the dunk over Carolina. Oh yeah, Sidney knows how to do it for the crowd alright!

BJD95… did you say “ESA”… man that even sounds old… The Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena.

The only thing that I disliked was watching from a local bar. You could not guage crowd noise at all. You couldn’t tell what the atmospher really was. I also remember as a student being right on top of the action. It seemed from T V that the crowd was several feet away from the court.

We should schedule some non conference games (yes, plural) for Reynolds from now on.

Let’s not get carried away. Too many people have paid too much money for their seats at the RBC Center.

  17. Astral Rain 03/17/2007 at 11:23 AM #

Yep. That’s why it should stay one game. I just think the game should be against someone more dangerous, that doesn’t have name brand recognition.

Dangerous mid-majors, who may be willing to fill the schedule with a road game at a tough opponent, and who would look good if we beat them. We can always if needed do a 2 for 1 (1 at RBC, 1 at Reynolds, 1 at their place deal)

There are enough consistent, good mid-majors out there that a game can be gotten (look to A-10, MVC teams mostly) You don’t think Drexel wouldn’t want another shot at us, or that Xavier wouldn’t relish the opportunity?

  18. beowolf 03/17/2007 at 11:24 AM #

74, Sid’s last game in Reynolds was that total shellacking of Wake Forest, 130-88.

“against Maryland when they had Len Bias. The crowd started the “Lenny, you suck” chant, while he was single-handedly keeping Maryland in the game.”

Are you sure the weren’t chanting “Lenny you suck” about Lenny Wirtz? His refereeing could keep any team in the game. He could see fouls an electron microscope couldn’t find. He was a ref that thought he was bigger than the game and felt the need to draw attention to himself by tooting his little whistle a dozen times while running toward center court until every eye in the place was on him. Then he would motion a traveling call with all the flair a called third strike in baseball.

    Lenny “The Worst”

  21. class of 74 03/17/2007 at 11:45 AM #

^^^ sorry you are correct. It was his last UNC game here.

You don’t forget 130 points. Insane three-point shooting on display that day.

I wish that game had been televised because I’d really like to see it.

Oh, and about that play you mentioned:

  23. tvopack 03/17/2007 at 12:17 PM #

I’m going to the game in WV. Three hours driving from DC for me.
