Frank Haith Gets It (Updated with Video)

In case you missed it, Miami coach Frank Haith was ejected from this evening’s basketball game at Carolina following a 10 second sequence of no less than 3 bad (if not flagrantly) missed calls. It was nice to see a coach stand up for his team and declare that he was not going to turn the other cheek to the corrupt officiating that has infested our once great conference.

Thanks to the N&O for this blog entry. They have turned our attention to the following YouTube video from last night. We TOLD YOU that the ACC is going to hate the internets!! Folks, this is only the beginning of a revolution.

In the span of 28 seconds, this is what Karl Hess, Michael Kitts and Bob Donato missed:

• A goaltending on Brandan Wright
• A push on Tyler Hansbrough
• A dead ball call
• An insult-to-injury three-point play after the missed dead ball call
• A no-call on Hansbrough and defending Brian Asbury

Now, even with every call, Haith wasn’t going to win this game. Heck, Ol’ Roy, Psycho T and the three freshmen could all get bounced and Miami wasn’t going to win. That’s not the point.

There should be more consistency by the officials, regardless of location and regardless of which coach is on the sidelines. Clearly, that’s not the case here.

Man, I missed the game. I really want to see this. I hope its “youtube”d, so I can see what happened. They sure as heck wont show the plays on ESPN. Not is Stu Scott has anything to do with it…

Here we go again. The refs cheat for Roy and K’s teams. All teams get bad calls. Its like golf sometimes you hit good shot, but you get a bad break. Those 3 missed calls really impacted the game. Miami keep it under 50. Lets worry about our Wolfpack and the hell with Carolina and Duke.

ol Frank needs a Lefty chair to kick!!!

Those were three blatently bad calls. Dapackster, maybe its not due to bias but it sure was incompetence. Either way Frank was right to stand up for his team. How long must we suffer through the joke officiating in the ACC has become?

I’m glad somebody showed some nads. It’s not whether you think it has an impact on the game. You can’t judge that by the final score. It is the fact that teams are forced to play over their heads, because they know that they are going to get jobbed when they play the boys in blue.

When you have to do that, you are going to tend to force things and get frustrated. It is a bunch of BS that teams are put in this position. If the boys in blue are so great, then why do they need “the benefit of the doubt.”

Let’s have a level playing field. I think that it would help the conference get back to the top. I don’t think the boys in blue and the 10 dwarfs is good for the health of the conference.

Thank you coach Haith…and maybe if some other coaches do the same, somone will pay attention…

…of course, I thought the VT coach was going to get tossed tonight b/c he thought we were getting the calls (and we got a lot).

  7. PurplePeopleEaters 01/31/2007 at 11:36 PM #

We really did get our fair share of calls tonight and Greenberg was rightfully mad. The UNC reffing was downright awful.. It’s getting ridiculous to watch their games, watching Tyler Hansbrough travel up and down the court and watch complete blatant fouls not called.

Hansbrough is the white Shaq who can’t jump! He plows you over then does a “lay-up!”

Frank’s my new hero. I was actually out at dinner with my wife (a uncch fan) during this one, watching it on a TV in the restaurant. I’ve been trying to show her the problem with slanted officiating, and she’s slooowwwwwly recognizing it. After that sequence, and particularly the last call where the Miami guy was knocked down going to the rim hard (a call the player with the ball ALWAYS gets), I immediately said, “Haith’s gonna get tossed now”. You could see it from the way he responded… and he absolutely did the right thing.

Now someone needs to speak up in a postgame interview, take the discipline that come with it, and make it public. This *&^% has to stop. More than my hatred of all that is uncch, I can’t stand watching their games this year because there are at least 20 fairly obvious calls each game that go their way… and that less than 5 teams in the country would ever get.

Hansborough should change his last name to “Wilbury” as much as he travels. I guess the ACC rulebook sez that UNC players get an extra step (or two or three).

We need that Beo picture…I’m waiting for a coach to pull his team off of the floor one night w/ time on the clock. I’m afraid that’s what it will take.

The Blue and Light Blue fans are just obnoxious when it comes to watching games with them. They always think THEY”RE getting stiffed by the refs, but when you point out the blatant calls in their favor they smirk. The calls go both ways, but it does seem they get more than their share and alot at crucial momentum changing times. Oh well, they are in training for the pros where anything goes. By the way, gumbydammit, nice one about the “Wilburys”.

He never saw a travel he didn’t like as well………””he loves to dance.”..”do the shuffle””

This continues a 50+ year trend of biased ACC officiating…

One of the ‘blatant’ bad calls, Tyler’s block, was clean, as replays showed.

The missed goaltend call was absurdly bad though.

  16. newt 02/01/2007 at 11:01 AM #

ESPN highlights of the game didn’t even mention that Haith had gotten a technical, much less ejected.

  17. ruffles31 02/01/2007 at 12:04 PM #

Did anyone see the end of the game where Copeland missed a dunk, kept one hand on the rim, caught the ball with the other hand, then let go of the rim, and then put back in a layup?

NO Technical called!!!!!!!!!!!! I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe the easiest call in the book wasn’t called but then I remember what team did it and thought that the refs are just getting ready for Saturday afternoon.

  18. shellnc 02/01/2007 at 12:17 PM #

(“One of the ‘blatant’ bad calls, Tyler’s block, was clean, as replays showed.”)

He got all ball on the initial block, but the continuation shows him taking the guy down with his forearm. The cation of a play conitues the whole way through a play. If it didn’t then you wouldn’t have 3 pointplays or 4 point plays. Hamburgler took the guy to the ground using body, that is a foul.

  19. yannes 02/01/2007 at 2:21 PM #

I bet the man down in Texas told Haith a lot about ACC refs regarding UNC and Duke before he came to Miami. Some of those no-calls changed the momentum of the game.

BTW — Roy is classless for running up the score for some damned biscuits.

  20. highstick 02/01/2007 at 2:39 PM #

I sure this will be “handled internally” by the ACC. Can those “moving pictures” be introduced as evidence.

  21. StateFans 02/01/2007 at 2:44 PM #

    ^ LOL!

As you already know…moving pictures aren’t evidence of anything. That is why we use video for instant replay?!

I go back to Kenny Inge, that man was always being hit, grabbed and pushed. It seemed like 20 times a game he was getting up off the ground and he would get up and sometimes push someone back and he would called right away. For some strange reason he was the one called an undisciplined player.

  23. wirogers 02/01/2007 at 2:49 PM #

Too bad that the Holes do not have to make the return trip to Miami this year. That is one of the worst parts of this new ACC, no longer the home and home series. There definitely would be some fireworks in Miami, would be worth watching a little just for that.

  24. BoKnowsNCS71 02/01/2007 at 2:53 PM #

This has moved beyond anti-UNX paranoia to blatant favoritism with the video to prove it. The ACC needs to do something about these referees — now.

  25. wirogers 02/01/2007 at 2:53 PM #

At least the TV guys got it right and provided good commentary that was not one sided. These guys may never get to do another Holes or Duke game again if they keep up the non-biased analysis of a game.
