UVA Game Thread

This won’t be a full live blogging exercise, but I may muster up the energy to update with thoughts as the game progresses. Obviously, the Pack really needs this one to keep its slim NIT hopes alive. We still have a home game against horrible Wake Forest and a road game against horrible Miami. Apart from those, this game might be the most likely win left on the schedule. Hopefully, the players were embarrassed by the Duke debacle, and will come out with some real fire.

The pre-game crew is being coy about Atsur’s status – a complete 180 from the cautionary “it’s probably best if he doesn’t play” foreshadowing before the Duke game. Just a hunch, but I expect Engin to play, and play surprisingly well.

9:12 – Fells just playing horrible defense in the early going. And I know I’ll catch shit for this, but I love that we got Packer announcing tonight. It’s nice to hear actual analysis instead of foolish banter.

9:49 – Packer states the obvious: “This is a very poorly played game.” Our effort is much better, but our offense is a complete trainwreck. 9 guys played in the first 10 minutes. I do like that. McCauley just can’t buy a basket, despite some good looks and his typical 100% effort.

10:05 – (Jeff) What a horribly played first half. Thank God I didn’t drive the three hours to watch this live. Virginia doesn’t score a basket for almost ten minutes in the first half and State is down seven at the half? Interesting that Gavin Grant didn’t start. Nice to see so many players get a little time in the first half. It will be nice to get a shooting guard who can shoot. But, we should find a way to substitute Dennis Horner for Courtney Fells and run some plays to get Horner some of Fells’ shots. Our defense was better at times, but doesn’t deserve any compliments. Officiating is awful. No surprise it is a Ted Valentine crew. They have got to start calling fouls on the post.

10:15 – Audible groaning is prevalent in my living room. Why don’t we see if we can let Singletary go for 50 tonight?

10:18 – There are times when Atsur looks like the only guy in white with enough sense to tie his own shoes.

10:21 – Ladies and gentlemen, we have a Costner sighting!

10:24 – So…the coeds like McCauley. Must be the soulpatch/goatee hybrid? Don’t look now, but we have some offensive momentum and Grant is playing defense.

10:29 – Killing ourselves from the line. Momentum in the shitter.

10:31 – Grant takes out Singletary AND draws 3rd foul. Best play of the night. Seriously, hope he’s ok.

10:34 – Fuck. Ballgame.

10:39 – Grant and Nieman go to the line with the chance to get us 8 points…and we come away with ONE. Freaking inexcusable.

10:43 – Atsur and Nieman playing together. Interesting.

10:46 – Cool Monroe footage.

10:48 – I vote no player of the game for us. Nice recognition by Packer re Lowe’s adjustments.

10:51 – There’s just no getting back in this game for us. At least we fought tonight. That’s something to build on.

10:54 – JR Reynolds, Wolfpack killa. Fells is just lucky his pants didn’t fall down on that one.

10:56 – Grant fouls out on a late, lame-ass call. We had no chance anyway.

11:00 – Fuck the powerball numbers, WRAL! Think they’d do that to Duke or UNC?

11:03 – Nice words about our program and Lowe’s tough situation from Brando and Packer. It is much appreciated, gentlemen. Time to stop fouling.

11:06 – Your final score – Virginia 71, NC State 58.

Never mind. Atsur’s back in the game. So is Niemann. Hmmm …

Ben just can’t get any shots to fall.

(NOTE: This can be deleted) HOLY S*H@ WE CAN’T DEFEND THE F$#KING THREE BALL TO SAVE OUR LIFE!!!!! We’ve picked up our intensity but they are killing us from outside.

  4. the_phisherman 01/24/2007 at 11:01 PM #

It’s so frustating to see us playing so hard and yet not quite able to claw our way back into the game. What has to happen to get an over the back call?? They have been pushing us out of position on the boards all night.

On the bright side, if Singletary goes to the NBA this spring Virginia won’t have anyone who can score next year. He and Reynolds (Sr.) are all they have. That doesn’t really provide much comfort tonight for some reason.

  7. highstick 01/24/2007 at 11:10 PM #

Don’t think it matters if we get pushed out of position if Reynolds keeps ripping the nets with those 3 pointers. This is not a pretty game.

    Bring on Wake!

    Please.

  9. Pack1998 01/24/2007 at 11:12 PM #

Gosh . . . just gotta be negative on this one.

Another horrible performance . . . leaves only Wake as a good game in 2007. Not a good trend against an average ACC.

Team needs to be getting better as the season progesses . . . not seeing it.

ACC basketball is pretty manic depressive . . . I’ll remain optimistic, we’ll see what the rest of the year brings.

What a weird schedule – get another full week off before the Hokies and Tarheels beat the shit out of us.

  11. beowolf 01/24/2007 at 11:32 PM #

This has been a season of worst-case scenarios. Once again, nothing positive to take from a home ACC game. Just to remind ourselves that this is what we had expected before the season started.

BJD95: Do we have any more sh** left in us? It’s been beat out so many times you’d think we’d be empty by now.

Sid has his work cut out for him with this roster. The best shooters cant play D. The best defenders….well Atsur has been hurt.

    Stats of the night
UVa shot 63% in the 2nd half

Take away Singletary and Reynolds and maybe a team with average ACC guards only shoots 55%. When do we play Miami again?

  14. burnbarn 01/25/2007 at 12:19 AM #

It was nice to see a good effort on the defensive side. Fells seemed to have his best game on d this season. He got beat by a quicker guard in the 2nd half, but his effort was good.

I think Sid sustituted too much in the first 10 mins bringing people in every dead ball. (I can’t believe i am typing this) We never got going on O in that half.

We lost this game on the line and on Ben missing too many shots that have been falling for him this season. Uva is not a very good team. Neither are we. We all knew this was going to be the reality for this season. It hurts for it to actually happen.

I still love this team and the coaching that is happening.

  15. OwenDorm83 01/25/2007 at 7:05 AM #

I don’t like to lose anytime. Last night, we were out-talented, which I expect to happen a lot. At least we weren’t sleep walking out there like the Duke game last weekend. Still having problems with turnovers (have our two “big” guards ever seen one they didn’t like?) and now, free-throws.

  16. kool k 01/25/2007 at 7:33 AM #

Credit where credit is due: Singletary and Reynolds were not like Corchiani and Monroe last night. They were more like Monroe and Monroe.

    42-41…..Wolfpack gets a steal….the barn is rockin….breakaway for the lead……and it’s freaking Niemann…..foul……starts a horrible run of missed free throws…..very frustrating

I still love this team as well, and I can’t wait for the calvary to arrive.

  17. Wulfpack 01/25/2007 at 7:49 AM #

The good news is I think we picked it up on the defensive end and we didn’t throw the ball away as much as we have in past games. Reynolds and Singletary simply got hot and stayed hot. It wouldn’t matter who you put on them, they were going to score. I was pissed seeing Singletary knife through our defense like swiss cheese for a dunk in the first half. I do think we turned it up after that and I was happy with the overall effort.

I just think our margin for error is so incredibly small and missing shot after shot doesn’t help the cause. Lowe is still tinkering with the lineup. I can’t quite make any sense of it quite yet. Ferguson sees a lot of minutes, then it’s Nieman, then it’s Horner. I guess he’s just trying to find the hot hand, but right now they are all pretty raw.

The worst thing I take away from this game is that it was certainly winn-able, being a home game and given UVA went about 6 minutes without a FG in the 1st half before getting hot in the 2nd. Gavin’s misses at the FT line really hurt us and put the game out of reach. When are we finally going to be able to put it all together?

All I can say is keep pushing forward and hoping for the best. There are some bright spots on the roster, just not enough.

There seem to be alot of fallacies repeated because they are “in vogue” right now
    1) “we are not trying” – bull, I saw a team trying out there, they just have some serious deficencies (see below)
    2) “Atsur is our best defender” – that may have been the case in the past but not last night. he was gettign torched like Frankenstein
    3) “We have alot of talent” – we have some talent but it is in a very non traditional way

    This team has problems:
    1) There is absloutely no team speed. Fells is the quickest we have and he was getting beat at will. Speed is more important than height in basketball, how “you klnow who” did not know this astounds me.
    2) Our “guards” have no basketball IQ. Grant and Fells just don’t make smart decisions. Who knows if this is just because that is the way they are or if past coaching did not teach them well. I am again surprised that ______ recruited this team on purpose.
    3) No leadership. No one is willing or able to step up and take over this team.

I see Sid trying everything he knows back there. Switching offenses and defenses but he just cannot over come these problems. He was handed a lemon and no sugar.

  19. choppack1 01/25/2007 at 8:29 AM #

At least we fought in this game. It looked like we were hustling and trying. Right now, we seem to be suffering from Wake D – try really for several seconds on the possession, then screw it up w/ a mental lapse.

    UVA starting guards – 56, NC State – 58.

It does bother me that coming into this game, the mantra had to be, just don’t let these guys kill us from the 3 point line…

Still, we had HUGE problems on the offensive end.

Down 42-41 and w/ two foul shots to tie and take lead – we miss both foul shots. Key turning point in the game.

Oh well, glad to see try some new things, happy to see Atsur out there and pleased w/ the effort overall – if not execution.

You guys can whine and complain about bad perimeter defense last night and bad defense against their two guards but the fact of the matter is that you can’t stop Reynolds or Singletary. From my seat, I saw Fells playing pretty good defense and still getting burned by Reynolds. He just wasn’t missing last night. What can you do? Double team him? Then singletary goes off.. You just have to match their offensive output and that’s something we can’t do.

McCauley needs to practice his hook shots. Grant needs to spend a couple of hours per day on the free throw line. I liked the play of Nieman when he was in there though.

We just have to bear it this season and it will all pay off next year. I hate to make the comparison but it’s like UNC’s Doherty years.. Obviously I think Sidney Lowe is better coach than Doherty was but they had to do some rebuilding before they made that run at the ACC and the NCAA Championship. We have a fairly young team and we have a great recruiting class with a couple of good transfers coming in next year. The experience will only help players like Horner, Fells, Ferguson, and Davis to be better when it really counts…

    GO PACK!

  21. choppack1 01/25/2007 at 8:50 AM #

PPE – I think he played good D sometimes, but you can’t mental lapses against these guys and we did. They got open looks from the 3 point line.

I’m not expecting us to hold them to 10 points each, but I’d prefer it they didn’t come 2 points away from matching our entire offensive output for the day. (So, while I’m whining about our D, obviously, our offense really laid an egg too last night.)

  22. PackGirl 01/25/2007 at 8:57 AM #

I know our perimeter defense is not great but it seems to go beyond that. Once again the gods of the 3-pointer were smiling down on our opponent. The luck has got to change!

  23. ChuckAllYall 01/25/2007 at 9:14 AM #

I think it’s to the point now that when nearly every team has their best shooting night against us, it’s more than “luck”.

  24. TNCSU 01/25/2007 at 9:26 AM #

I think the ol’ “Triangle and 2” on UVA may have needed a try. Singletary and Reynolds were shooting lights out. Make somebody other than those two beat you.

Overall, it looks like this is a “rebuilding” year, and we need to look for the positives. Like someone mentioned earlier, we are a little slow on overall team speed – hence, guys are getting open looks, and more often than not, they are burning us.

  25. zahadum 01/25/2007 at 9:27 AM #

    Some assorted thoughts.

Yes, Singletary is great, but it shouldn’t take you the whole first half to figure out that he’s right handed. If he’s going to be too quick for you anyway, then at least force him left.

In a similar vein, think Ben has fallen in love with his left hand a little too much lately. Glad he has that option, but he shouldn’t be shooting a majority of his shots with his off hand.

Improved effort from Courtney. Liked that he didn’t quit even after turning his ankle. If he could just get his body and his head on the same page, it’d be something.

Just me or did the Singletary foul on the Neiman breakaway look fairly flagrant? Not sure how clubbing someone across the head with your forearm can be considered making a play on the ball.

When you’re: a) dying for offense and b) he’s finally getting into a groove then c) you can’t go 5 minutes without letting Branden touch the ball.

Regarding not just our games, but all the conference games I’ve seen this year, is there any such thing as an over the back foul anymore?
