We have been on a bit of an unannounced hiatus the last few days. Sorry…lots going on.

We ran across this old article over the summer when doing some googling for Sidney Lowe and thought that it would be nice to have an entry dedicated to legendary coach, Morgan Wootten and the NC State-DeMatha connection.

    Didn’t Willis Casey offer our coaching job to Morgan Wootten before V after Sloan left for Florida? Or was that a different time?

    I have a good friend who played for Wooten @ DeMatha and went on to play @ Davidson College. John Carroll is his name. I also had a chance to see DeMatha play against my high school, South Mecklenburg, when we had Johnny Edwards who many thought was the next coming of Walter Davis. Both Walter Davis and Bobby Jones played for South Mecklenburg. Great memories!

    One of, if not the, greatest coaches of all time in ANY sport. That means football, basketball, soccer, baseball, cricket, anything you want to name and that includes professional along with amateur. Not only one of the greatest coaches but greatest people also. LONG LIVE WOOTTEN!!!

    Wow! 46 years and never less than 20 wins. His average was roughly 28 – 4. That is incredible.

    From 1975 through 1988 NC State had at least one DeMatha graduate on the roster:
    1975 and 1976: Kenny Carr
    1977: Kenny Carr and Hawkeye Whitney
    1978 and 1979: Hawkeye Whitney
    1980: Hawkeye Whitney, Sidney Lowe, Dereck Whittenburg
    1981-1983: Sidney Lowe and Dereck Whittenburg
    1984: Bennie Bolton
    1985-1987: Bennie Bolton and Quentin Jackson
    1988: Quentin Jackson

    We almost continued the streak for another four years. V signed Pancho Hodges and Derrick Chandler, a couple of 6-9 power forwards, that would have been freshmen in 1989.

    I think that was the year we also had a commitment from Gary Mattison and Donnie Seale. Grades ended up claiming all four.

    Chandler ended up at Nebraska and was a pretty good player. He’s playing in Europe now. Hodges went to the University of Colorado and was a solid contributor. Very good shotblocker.
