ECU 2 NC State 0 / Wake Wins “State Championship”

East Carolina
East Carolina defeated Southern Mississippi tonight in Hattiesburg.

That gives the Pirates a 2-0 record against teams that have defeated NC State this season – Southern Miss and Virginia.

Less than one and a half years ago, ECU was easily one of the ten worst football programs in all of America. Almost immediately after hiring Skip Holtz, the Pirates are defeating teams that NC State cannot with growing regularity.

We never make our respect of ECU AD, Terry Holland, a secret…and we certainly won’t now. Holland fired Coach John Thompson after only two seasons at ECU. None of this “gotta give him time” bullshit. None of this, “I’m a coach…I know how difficult it is to build a program….we’ll never succeed without some consistency and continuity.”

Congratulations to Terry Holland and ECU for managing proactively and for making a great hire as a part of their plan.

The rest of the year’s schedule will prove to be pressure-packed for the Wolfpack.

Wake Forest
Like Mack Brown before him, Chuck Amato likes to reference the North Carolina “State Championship” as a primary goal of the NC State’s football program each year. This season, the NC State-UNC game hasn’t even been played yet and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have secured the State Championship.

Refer to the 1990s. When UNC and ECU are both well-coached and NCSU is not, we can’t recruit this state for $#@%. And in the 1990s, Wake Forest was the same kind of automatic win that Duke is.

I can’t underscore the importance of decision making this year.

It is possible that this team could lose out. I fear the turmoil that will ensue if we lose a third straight game to UNC and also lose to ECU on our home field. I support Chuck and hope he can turn the season around but it just doesn’t look good right now. Yesterday’s effort was one of the most uninspired performances I have seen by a Pack team in a long time.

Skippy is looking like a better coach than many imagined.
I fear the worst Thanksgiving weekend.

said it all year… ecu is nasty this year?

If ECU fans storm the field after a win, the resultant melee could make the FIU-Miami fight look like a church picnic.

Our athletic department thinks as long as they are running in the black they are doing a superb job. If they operated in the real business world there would be a massive house clearing from the AD down. Wolfpack fans don’t really know or seem to care how bad it truly is over there. We are getting less bang for our buck than anybody in the ACC right now. And the sad part is there is no chance of any changes anytime soon because our balance sheet is in the black but just barely.

74 is dead on. Lee Fowler doesn’t care about wins or losses, only about deficits and surpluses. He regularly marginalizes critics, and when those critics’ frustration at his do-nothing approach finally boils over, he labels them lunatics and himself as the calm voice of reason.

The most amusing thing of all from the Murphy Center and the Case Athletic
Center is the litany of statistics that seem to provide rationale for the decision-making there. Everything’s fine here, they say. Well, there are lies, damned lies and then there are statistics. The only stat that matters is wins and losses and everthing else is secondary. There’s no conference standing for “only a play away” last time I checked. Wins and losses.

I do not think it ironic that FSU and NC State are mired in the bottom of the ACC. Both programs seemingly want to operate like it’s Tallahassee in 1996 and no matter what the coaching staff does or does not do, they’ll win because they have a talent gap to cover any sideline deficiencies.

Thing is, it’s 2006 and this is the new ACC. You better have some good minds down on the sidelines, minds that can see what’s really going on before their eyes and adjust accordingly. There’s an inability to do that in Raleigh and Tallahassee and it cannot be mere coincidence. It would appear that football has left Bobby Bowden and Chuck Amato behind. When Dave Hart and Lee Fowler will recognize this is the only question.

The “only a play away” crap really steams me. Without a freaking MIRACLE play, we lose to Boston College, and this season is even further in the crapper. We were alot closer to losing that game than beating any one of Wake, Maryland, or Virginia. If you want to get subjective (which I hate – bottom-line results should be the metric) like Amato apparently wants, we’ve only looked like the better team on the field once in ACC play (vs. last place FSU). So, I don’t think Chuck is well-advised to open that line of discussion.

Before anybody jumps all over me, I do not base success in football on comparisons to UNC, but did anyone check out their stats in the loss to WFU?

  10. beowolf 10/29/2006 at 5:22 PM #

I fear losing out even to UNC & ECU even less than winning one or two more and that be “good enough.”

What I fear the most is losing Bill Cowher to UNC.

  11. redfred2 10/29/2006 at 5:40 PM #

I can’t bring myself to believe that there is even the slightest possibility at all, but if Bill Cowher were to end up in coaching college football in the state of North Carolina, but in Chapel Hill instead of Raleigh, I would think that the NCSU administration building and everyone in it would end up in shambles, literally.

  12. Woof Wolf 10/29/2006 at 6:08 PM #

There are too many of us with heavy constuction equipment for them to let that happen.

  13. forst8 10/29/2006 at 7:45 PM #

If Bill Cowher will take a job coaching college ball and it isn’t at NC State, anyone connected to the Administration better find a very hidden and very well constucted bunker where they can hunker down for a long time. As mentioned in an earlier article on SFN, if Bill Cowher wants this job, Bill Cowher better get this job.

Hilarious. If you build it, they will come. And they were burn the house down!

“…..well we played good enough to win but we just had to many mistakes and misques….”

I can read minds! I know what the apologist are going to say before they actually speak!
For 3 years, we’ve had a “QB deficit”; by all statistical measures, Daniel is certainly an adequate QB, so what is the excuse now?
Just comes down to one last variable doesn’t it?

  16. GoldenChain 10/30/2006 at 10:54 AM #

PS Thinks Skip would want some extra jack and follow in his dad’s footsteps?

  17. Peachy 11/20/2006 at 2:42 PM #

It is nice to see that you guys have some sort of respect for ECU. I am a hardcore Pirate fan and my best friend went to State. We have a good time together. I think I speak for most when I say that no one on either side wants these two schools to have a crappy football team. There is too much history between both programs to see it one sided.

Losing to Rice was a real pisser. That’s what happens when you don’t play all four quarters. I was rooting for you guys against Carolina. This weekend should be good b/c both teams are pissed I am sure. Another epic battle….not counting us getting our ass kicked in Charlotte a couple years ago………that does not count by the way….LOL.
