Tarheels Love Talking about the Pack

Thanks to the Red & White from State for this entry focused on UNC-CH wide receiver, Jesse Holley’s recent illogical comments about NC State’s football schedule.

Obsessing about State’s football schedule has become somewhat the norm for senior leaders of the Tarheel’s football program. Just last year, UNC’s quarterback Matt Baker decided to weigh in with thoughts on the Wolfpack’s football schedule. (Please tell us how State people are the ones “obsessed” with everything that Carolina does!) SFN highlighted, discussed and analyzed Baker’s previous comments in this entry that we encourage you to review.

They are suppose to confirm with each other before making the call on a touchdown not afterwards. I was always told that once a signaled touchdown was made then that was it, but somehow not in this case.

I don’t think I have ever seen the Tarheels get beaten in anything by a close call (much less a bad call) Non-biased officials do not exist when they are playing, especially in BBall

2 years ago is gone. We LOST, no ifs ands or buts about it. Scoreboard. Does not matter, there are no moral victories. IF we had played the game the way we should have played the game, it would not even be a discussion now. A BAD UNC team kicked our butts up and down the field all day long. Even if we had won, we deserved to lose that game. Check the record books – it shows we lost. We lost, and we cant let it happen again.

Now, on a similar note but strying slightly…….I read in USA Today that Bill Parcells said Drew Henson was out as Dallas reserve QB, that some scrub named Matt Baker was replacing the former wonderkid. If Matt Baker can beat out phenom Drew Henson, why didnt UNC win more games last year? A QB going ot the NFL should mean more to a program. Where is Mel Kiper now? You would think a school that sent its QB to the NFL should have been more successful.

Its too bad my most vivid memories of TA McLendon will be 1 inch from the goaline in Chapel Hill, and 6 inches from the goaline at OSU.

Everyone talks about officials being “blind” or “unfair” when calls go against our respective teams, but does anyone here HONESTLY believe that officials are pulling for one team or another? If so, then you are delusional and disrespecting people who perform an extremely tough and underpaid job. I’m not saying that officials don’t make mistakes from time to time, even big mistakes, but they don’t have a bias against a team just because a call doesn’t go your way.

I don’t know the official rules for calling back a touchdown once the official signals it. They do it on penalties all the time, even though the official might make the signal. Such a high-profile call would have certainly been reviewed by the ACC to decide whether or not to reprimand the officials if they broke the rules. That was not the case, so clearly the officials were well within their rights. Unless maybe the ACC is pulling for UNC as well…

doatesjr~ I think its safe to say that the ACC is always pulling for UNX…. It makes them A LOT of money. as for officials being biased I dont see it so much in football. I do think they make calls when they really dont see things happen… they just assume at times. but as for BB I really do believe that refs are biased. they dont stay consistant at all with fouls… its disturbing… guys like Sheldon Williams and Tyler Hansborough can get away with a LOT more then guys like Andrew Brackman. Brackman got picked on more then any player I have seen in the past 10 years. Any little thing he did was a foul….

Matt Baker is a good QB…. he just had no real wideouts at all… he also had a horrible backfield… oh yeah, and the fact that he had no real backup QB really screwed over Carolina….

I wish him well in Dallas.

  8. Mike 08/24/2006 at 5:31 PM #

One other point about officiating………I was certified to umpire basball at the college level and basketball at the high school level. Officials do not have a bias and are supposed to remain neutral. True Swofford is a UNC guy all the way but that still does not mean officials favor UNC. John Clougherty (head of ACC basketball officials) is a long tme family friend and a man of class and integrity. If there was any inkling of any inpropriety from the conference and Swofford, he would step down immediately.

We all remember the calls that go agaist us, that we think we got shafted. Do we remember the missed calls in our favor? Not usually. We like to cry about the ones that go against us, but I have never seen anyone give a play back that was clearly missed in their favor.

Do you remember Hodge’s first two years? Not to mention the senior year WF/CP affair. He was always elbowed, slapped, shoved and it seemed like he was always picking himself up off the floor after being thrown down. A few seconds later he would be whistled. What would piss me off the most about this would be the announcer saying “Hodge has got to learn how to control his emotions.” Sure, after being banged and bruised with no call he should really learn to play within himself.

How about if this upcoming season we all keep tally of the clearly signalled TD’s in D1 football, only the ones not involving penalties, and see how many of points get wiped off of the scoreboard after fact. That should give us an idea of how often it happens. That’s D1 only, not lesser officiating talent.

Look guys, the fact is that the officials felt that they made the wrong initial call, and wanted to correct the mistake. If the official who signaled the TD felt so strongly then why didn’t he protest? He saw TA cross the line with the ball, but obviously didn’t see the rest of his body (or his knees that had touched first), therefore he signaled a TD. Another official stepped in and said that TA was down before he crossed the line. What is so freakin’ hard to understand about that?

The officials made the call they thought, as a group, was correct. As Mike said above, if there had been any impropriety going on,it would have certainly been dealt with. Everyone whose opinion counts was OK with the call (the officials, the ACC, etc.), and the only people crying about it 2 years later are Pack fans. That game is over, history. Give it a rest.

It’s a judgement call, not exact science, never has been. But it’s a definite factor in every game, always has been and always should be. Just like an interception, a fumble, or a stupid penalty, it’s human, but it’s not reversible on a whim, every once in a very great while, or when it affects the outcome of a whole game. It’s that way in history and I like it, even when my team comes out on the short end.

I’m dropping it. Just count ’em all up this season. We’ll talk about it again at the end of the 2006 football season.

    redfred2,

    Sounds like a plan 🙂

Speaking of the Heels – word on the other board is that Aleric Mullins cannot play this year – essentially an NON-QUALIFIER – but has been cleared by the NCAA to stay in school – strange stuff.

“but does anyone here HONESTLY believe that officials are pulling for one team or another? If so, then you are delusional and disrespecting people who perform an extremely tough and underpaid job.”

Yes, I do – and I am not delusional. Anyone with eyes knows that Jim Knight’s officiating consistently favored the Tar Holes. And the breaks that UNC receives in basketball – most notably and recently with Traveller Hansbrough – speak for themselves.

^How about Dean Smith and his little neighborhood buddy Leonard Wurtz? It seems those two may have gotten together for different types of “home cooking” a little too frequently also.

  18. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 08/25/2006 at 12:25 PM #

Lenny Wurtz is the biggest disgrace to spring from the ACC. Anyone that claims ACC officials are fair never saw that boy call a game. Is he dead yet?

If “if’s” and “buts” were candy and nuts, all state fans would have a Merry Christmas. It is what it is…one play doesn’t make a game. The score remains the same. FYI, Tar Heels is not one word. Not that accuracy matters on this site though.

If I ever, just one time, while watching on the tube with friends, or go to a game involving UNC, and Tar…..Heel fans aren’t the most constant and non-stop whiners involving the officiating, I’ll invite your whole extended family over for Christmas dinner at my place.

Jesus H. Christ… one of the reasons I like SFN is that generally there are well thought out posts and reasonable, often insightful, comments. Not on this thread I see. All I see on this post are people who actually believe the crap we all say when we are drinking, watching a game, and pissed about our team losing. You know what I mean, stuff like “those officials are always making calls against State/UNC” or “man, one call goes against State/UNC and they all start whining as usual”. What a load of crap. If you really believe that officials go out night after night and make calls based on bias against/for a particular team, then you are a bona-fide idiot. Simple. I hope you guys didn’t attend State, because if I was a State alum I’d be furious that they let in someone that obtuse and boneheaded.

And you want to talk about whining? I haven’t seen so much whining about officiating in my life as I’ve seen on this one post from some of you Pack folks.

Unfortunately for some of you, the world of college sports in the ACC does not fall into 2 categories: “poor little helpless NC State” and “UNC-loving officials/media”. If officials are so darned interested in seeing UNC win games, why in the hell haven’t they done a little more lately? If they are going to cheat for the Heels, then I want a friggin’ ACC championship!

It’s not every time we touch the ball, or every time down the field/court. This is about ONE, that is ONE, very controversial call and ONE GAME. Where that ONE call undeniably and ultimately affected the actual outcome of that ONE GAME. It is a legitimate and justified gripe. If it wasn’t, you won’t be so adamantly defending, or even still here on this thread otherwise.

I’ll say this about deliberate bias, I do not believe it. There is nothing intended or premeditated about it, it just seems to be inheret to certain environments under certain influences. And I won’t be complaining about what any Wolfpack fan thinks anyway, you’re privy to some of the best of those of environments available. Be thankful.
