State fans better be ready to cough up some additional cash over the next five years to get Barner because it will take roughly $2 million to get thim, a million more than we were paying Herb.

All of those who were ready for a change, now is the time to send Bobby Purcell and Lee Fowler emails. I am going to pledge $1000 a year for the next 5 years. It isn’t much, but it is something.

    Southbeach…

…can you talk us through some perspective on how the money can be designated to be appropriated directly to the coach?

How does the WPC’s not-for-profit status impact this? If we pledge more to the WPC, doesn’t it go directly to scholarships? How can we pledge more to go directly to a coaching fund?

    Thanks for the insight!

People have been ready to cough up more cash for several years but your AD and Chancellor would not make a decision…

If we are going to move forward and be great only 1/3 of the problem has been removed, its time to keep pushing the other 2 out the door…

  4. David C. 04/01/2006 at 10:17 PM #

the only email I will send Fowler is one telling him to join Herb on the bus out of Raleigh… he created this mess in the first place by not doing his job 5 years ago…

^Our sources differ with some of those comments and corroborate others of them.

Texas will in all likelyhood loose their entire front court; although they have some good freshmen coming in. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with what is really at stake ($$$). It might play a small but pivotal role. If Barnes jumps on the chance , and the AD idiots just shut their mouths and hand him the briefcase, then one thing is for sure. RBC ticket prices soar. If so, to get your money’s worth they’ll need to drop the Citadel and others, and replace with high caliber OOC foes.

    please let this happen…

And I wouldn’t mind this at all. Maybe get us Texas next year or Arizona State instead of the Citadel?

used this on another thread but maybe it lends itself here. Question: If you could get McMilllan for the same as Barnes then consider.
“The new rule set by the NCAA’s that a player must be 19 or be one year removed from graduating High School to go pro is going to change the basketball landscape. Getting a coach like a Lowe or McMillan to come in could attract some big names that are only attending college until their eligibility for the NBA comes up. It sounds crass and lacks the classy image Herb had worked to build, but it’s a fact of life. These dozen or so players are going to play somewhere, and an up tempo, pro style attack led by a recognizable NBA figure could be an answer.”

Texas is unlikely to let him go without a fight…. We’d better work quickly as it will take them at least 6 weeks to read through all the V. Young/NFL & Spring Football articles. Should give us just enough time to seal the deal.

    To answer another question–

Gifts to a nonprofit can be designated for any use the donor wishes. The recipient doesn’t have to accept a conditioned gift, but if it does, it is obligated to use the funds as directed.

I can’t begin to explain how excited I was when I heard the news of Sendek heading to ASU… But then it started to occur to me that the aggressive posture by our fan-base towards Herb might end up being a great disservice in our coaching search. Apparently, the talk of the town among the coaches at the Final Four has been how badly we’ve treated Herb Sendek despite his ‘accomplishments’.

Was there similar talk of this at Indiana when they forced Davis out? Because when you think about it, its quite the similar situation… The fans are not content with being mediocre.

  13. Waxhaw 04/02/2006 at 6:46 AM #

Anyone who knows anything, knows that Sendek was treated more than fairly. There are people out there who remember what NC State basketball was like prior to Les Robinson. They know NC State wants and deserves a winner.

Herb will do great at a program with lower expectations. He might even do better with the fresh start. Any coach who is scared of coming to the ACC to coach for a team that has performed on our level the last 10 years can stay where he is for all I care.

At the end of the day we are NCSU a member of the ACC and two time national champion. That alone will bring the candidates with aspirations and passion. But please look at our history of coach selection.

    E. Case from high school to NCSU. Press Maravich from Clemson to Assistant to Case for one year to head coach of NCSU. Norman Sloan from Florida (before they knew what basketball was) to NCSU. Offer made to Morgan Wootten from DeMatha H.S. before Jim Valvano from Iona took our job. Les Robinson from East Tennessee State to NCSU. Finallly Herb from Miami of Ohio to NCSU. Do you see a pattern here? We have NEVER gone after a big time, high profile, high dollar coach in our history. Not saying that is the right way or that it is bad just the way it has been.

Some of the comments re: the Wolfpack Club above are correct. You CAN designate your gift. The WPC has done a good job with creating a climate where undesignated gifts seem to be the only alternative, aside from a capital project gift which requires an unrestricted gift with it to acquire seats.

So to answer your question, you can make a designated gift to the WPC in writing and stipulate that the money ONLY be used to help offset the cost of a new coach. The WPC may, in turn, deem that those funds will not be counted toward your “annual gift” and more so as a gift to a campaign.

I’m not buying this “scaring off a coach” stuff. In my view it’s simply being honest – if you are not completely committed to becoming part of the elite, NC State is not the job for you. It’s that simple.

  17. Jeff 04/02/2006 at 9:29 AM #

The only coaches who would be scared off by a coach that was given 10 years of opportunity to succeed are not the kind of coaches that need to be on our sidelines in the first place.

  18. Daniel 04/02/2006 at 9:29 AM #

If the talk in Indianapolis among the coaches concerns our “unfair treatement of Sendek,” then you can blame Lee Fowler for stoking the flames over the years, which is reason #1 why he needs to go.

Purcell for AD. Make it happen.

Seems to me that the passion demonstrated by ‘Packers in all of this would be a sign to a potential coach that he would have a potentially stronger backing from fans at NCSU to build an elite program than at many other schools. It’s always going to be a two-edged sword. But, if I were a coach, I’d rather have passionate fans that can provide the “sixth man” in a game than an apathetic group that seemingly doesn’t care what happens.

How about Bob Knight? He would look good in a wolfpack sweater. Instant respect, and he has seemed to change his ways at Texas Tech.

    John Calipari!!!!

If all of the ones who were adamantly opposed to Herb, of which I was one, will now put their passion into going to the games, cheering loudly for the next man, embracing him with open arms, giving him a grace period of at least three or four years before thinking about the slightest bit of criticism/negativity, and putting everything we have into this, then we’ll be on the right road. People who are scared of the job and the fans don’t need to apply. It needs to be a man who passionately wants to be here and fight Duke and UNC. Herb didn’t know how to beat them. He just didn’t understand at all. I’ll settle for someone that can beat Duke and UNC each about two games out of every five. Just have a respectable record. And actually give a shit about the fans. Sendek was just so aloof and arrogant that it totally turned me off. I’m not saying a man has to bow to the fans, but at least try to have a good relationship with them and take into consideration what they say.

For the record, I’m not sold now on Rick Barnes. I understand that many feel we have been more appreciative of Herb taking us to 5 NCAAs. But I sensed in Rick’s voice a couple of weeks ago some apprehension about coming to Raleigh. If that’s the case, then he doesn’t need to be here. We need someone who is dying to take on the challenge, dying to beat Duke and UNC, and dying to win an ACC title and at least contend for the national title. If you’re nervous about criticism/heat, then you don’t need to apply. There are a lot of coaches who would be dying to have the nice arena, the chance to compete against Duke and UNC and the ACC, the chance to get paid a nice salary, the chance to serve a rabid fanbase, the chance to etch their name in the history books of Wolfpack basketball beside the names of Case, Sloan, and Valvano. If you can’t get excited about all of that, then there’s no way you should even be considered.

Having said all of that, I think all NC State fans need to cool it some now with the negativity/criticism/second guessing for at least three or four years. Give the new man a chance to show what he can do or might not can do until the barrage starts coming again. If you make it completely unbearable, this job will become viewed worse and worse in the long run.

Thank you to statefansnation for what you did in this coaching change. People have criticized you in the last few years for being negative/critical, but it’s nice to read a website that is not all about “positive propaganda.” I’m not saying “Be negative all the time.” But this site provided an oftentimes objective look at the Sendek situation while over at Packpride and gopack.com, it’s all about “sunshine.”

Thank you, statefansnation, and thank you to all the writers on this site who care so much about NC State, NC State football, and NC State basketball.

It has this “christmas morning” feel and I’m excited as hell to cheer for the new man and a renewed program.
    Go Pack!
